Abstract

Monoglycerides and diglycerides are a form of emulsifier. Mono- and di-glycerides can be synthesized in various ways, one of which is esterification. In the esterification process, the use of a catalyst is very important in advance of the fatty acid conversion results. Homogeneous catalysts are mostly used in this process. Homogeneous catalysts are compounds that have the same phase as the reactants when a chemical reaction takes place. One of the newest forms of the catalyst with "green chemistry" status is DES (Deep Eutectic Solvents). NADES (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents) is a DES solvent that uses abundant natural compounds and is ideal for DES because of its diversity of chemical properties, biodegradability, and non-toxicity. Abstract

Mono-diacylglycerol (MDAG) is a type of emulsifier that is widely used in the food and nonfood industries. Monoglycerides are also biodegradable and can be used as additives in food because they provide good effects. Its use can be found in bakery products, foods with low fat content. MDAG can be produced from the esterification process. The advantages of this technique are that the esterification process takes place at a lower temperature than glycerolysis and a shorter time than enzymatic hydrolysis. In the research on the synthesis of mono-diacylglycerol from Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) with glycerol, the best results were obtained at a temperature of 150 0C, yielding 74% yield, seeded at 160 0C, the emulsion stability value reached 72% with an ALB level of 39%. At a molar ratio of 1: 2, the MDAG brightness level was 85.57%. Keywords: Gliserol, Mono-diasilgliserol , PFAD

Abstract

Ethylene glycol is a hygroscopic liquid with low volatility. Ethylene glycol is colorless, odorless, has a low viscosity. Ethylene glycol is used as a polyester resin for fibers, a film-making agent, an antifreeze and coolant agent, a heat exchange agent, a waterbased formula, and an unsaturated polyester. The purpose of establishing an ethylene glycol factory is expected to be able to support efforts to save the country's foreign exchange through import substitution of ethylene glycol, and increase employment. Ethylene glycol factory with a capacity of 200,000 tons / year in Batam, Riau Islands. The ethylene glycol production process is carried out through the Dow METEOR process which consists of 4 stages, namely the standard discussion stage, the ethylene glycol formation stage, the ethylene glycol concentration stage, and the product separation stage. The main design is the CSTR reactor, which is used to react ethylene oxide with water to form ethylene glycol with the by-products of diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol. Based on the results of the economic feasibility analysis of the factory, the ethylene glycol plant is feasible to establish with a Payback Period (PBB) obtained of 2 years, an IRR of 22.738%, a Percent Return on Investment (ROI) is 30.59%, and a Break Event Point (BEP) is obtained by 60%. Abstract

The high reliance on fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal, and gas - causes exhaution on fossil resources ( crude oil, natural gas, and coal). Therefore, to resolve the fossil-fuel dependency, sago solid waste is converted into bioethanol as the renewable energy. On this research, the process of sago pulp fermentation is done by hydrolysis process and fermentation with the use of Saccharomyces cerevisiae as the yeast. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of temperature and time on the hydrolysis process producing glucose and to study the glucose fermentation from hydrolysis into bioethanol from Saccharomyces cerevisae. The hydrolysis process produced glucose with of time of 60 minutes and temperature of 125oC, 135oC and 1450C. Fermentation was done in 2L fermentors for 5 days. The sulfuric acid hydrolysis increases bioethanol levels from sago pulp. The higher the temperature with the increasing time of the process, the higher the glucose concentration will be resulted. The highest glucose was obtained at a temperature of 145 with 60 minutes time which is 24.20 g / L. Sago pulp fermentation process produced a maximum condition at 96-hour fermentation with bioethanol levels of 13%. Keywords: bioethanol, hydrolysis, sago, saccharomyces cerevisiae, fermentation

Abstract

Nanochitosan is a physical modification of chitosan by reducing the size of chitosan to nano size. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of variations in volume ratio between chitosan solution and tripolyphosphate solution and to determine the characteristic of nanochitosan with Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) analysis methods. The first step for making nanochitosan is to make a 1% formic acid solution and 0.1% trypolyphosphate solution. After that, make 0.3% chitosan solutions and then stir it using magnetic stirrer. After 15 minutes, trypolyphosphate solution at a volume ratio between chitosan and trypoliphosphate each 3:1 and 7:1 are added slowly to the chitosan solution. Stirring continues for up to 1 hour with a stirring speed of 1200 rpm. The last one is the characterization of nanochitosan. Chitosan from dried shrimp industrial waste has a degree of deacetylation that matches the chitosan quality standard, which is 76%. The particle size from this research were 2639.5 nm and 2882.0 nm. From this research, the particle size and index polydispersity value were increased when the ratio between chitosan solution and tryppoliphosphate increased. Keywords: formic acid, deacetylation degree, ionic gelation, nanocitosan, trypolyphosphate

Abstract

Several methods have been developed to reduce and minimize the presence of copper heavy metals that pollute waters, such as by adsorption method, is one of the natural  zeolite material is widely used as an adsorbent. Natural zeolites have potential as adsorption heavy metals in waste water treatment due to adsorption capacity and high selectivity, long-lived, and the numbers are abundant in Indonesia. Research studies of metal adsorption kinetics of Cr  (III) with activated natural zeolite aims to determine a suitable kinetic model for metal adsorption kinetics of Cr  (III) with activated zeolite  adsorption evaluate the metal Cr  (III) and the effect of temperature on the adsorption rate constant. This study begins with the activation of natural zeolite in physics and chemistry and to be continued to Cr  (III) metal adsorption by activated natural zeolite with a variety of contact time and temperature. Results spectrophotometer adsorption measured using atomic absorption (AAS). From the research that has been done shows that a suitable model for the kinetics of adsorption of metal Cr  (III) with zeolite activated following the model of first  order with a value of k= 0,011  min-1 for a temperature variation of 300C, 400C, 500C. From the results obtained conclude that the higher the temperature will be faster the rate of adsorption and the amount of activation energy values obtained in the amount of 296,73 J/mole, which means that  the adsorption process takes place in physics. Abstract

Monoglycerides (MG) and diglycerides (DG) are a group of synthetic emulsifiers that can be obtained from the process of esterification of fatty acids with glycerol using several types of acid-based catalysts, such as ZnO, zinc carboxylate, ZnCl2 and MgO. Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is used in the process of esterification replacing acid-based catalysts. DES is a system that consists of a mixture of at least two components: hydrogen bond acceptors (HBA) and hydrogen bond donors (HBD) which form eutectic phases that melting points are lower than the constituent components. DES application in the esterification process for the purpose of food grade takes into account the level of toxicity so that DES is made from the composition of green chemistry compounds known as NADES (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents). NADES is a non-toxic DES group so that it can be applied in processing emulsifier raw materials as additives for food products. In addition, DES can be used repeatedly (reused catalyst) and the results show that the catalyst activity is well. The use of DES which acts as a catalyst and reused catalyst can save costs without reduced the conversion. Key words: DES, emulsifier, esterification, reused catalyst
