Abstract

This study aims to analyze elementary school students’ mathematical numeracy literacy skills based on real-life contexts. Numeracy literacy is a fundamental competence that enables students to understand, use, and interpret mathematical concepts in daily situations. This research employed a quantitative descriptive approach. The study was conducted at Madrasah Aliyah Swasta darud Dakwah Wal Irsyad Baru Baru Tanga, Pangkajene and Islands Regency, during August–September 2025. The research subjects were elementary school students selected purposively. Data were collected using a numeracy literacy test designed with daily life contexts, covering number operations, measurement, data interpretation, and simple problem-solving. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics, including mean scores and percentage achievement levels. The results revealed that students’ numeracy literacy skills were generally in the moderate category. Students showed adequate ability in performing basic calculations; however, difficulties were found in understanding contextual problems, selecting appropriate strategies, and interpreting mathematical results within real-life situations. These findings indicate that mathematics learning at the elementary level still tends to emphasize procedural skills rather than contextual understanding. Therefore, strengthening contextual-based mathematics instruction is essential to improve students’ numeracy literacy skills and their ability to apply mathematics meaningfully in everyday life.

Abstract

Although mathematics anxiety and self-efficacy have received substantial attention in mathematics education, survey-based evidence on elementary students’ affective readiness in numeracy learning remains limited. This study aims to describe the levels of mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy among elementary school students and examine the relationship between the two variables. A quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational survey design was employed, involving 150 fifth-grade students selected through proportionate random sampling. Data were collected using mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy questionnaires, both validated through expert judgment and internal consistency testing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation analysis. The findings indicate that students’ mathematics anxiety was generally at a moderate level, while their mathematics self-efficacy was also categorized as moderate. The correlation analysis revealed a significant negative relationship between mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy, indicating that students with higher anxiety tended to report lower confidence in learning mathematics. This study contributes to elementary mathematics education by emphasizing the importance of affective factors in strengthening students’ numeracy readiness. The practical implication is that teachers need to create supportive, low-pressure, and confidence-building mathematics learning environments that normalize errors, strengthen mastery experiences, and encourage students to engage more positively with mathematical tasks.

Abstract

Numeracy literacy is a fundamental basic competence for elementary school students in responding to the challenges of everyday life. However, the implementation of numeracy instruction in elementary schools still tends to focus on procedural skills and has not fully developed reasoning abilities in accordance with the demands of the Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum (AKM), as reflected in students’ low ability to solve context- and reasoning-based numeracy problems. This study aimed to analyze the numeracy literacy profile of elementary school students based on the AKM framework. A descriptive method with a qualitative approach supported by quantitative data was employed, conducted at SD 50 Bonto Panno, Pangkep Regency, with 25 Grade V students as participants. Data were collected through an AKM-based numeracy literacy test, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed by categorizing students’ abilities according to the AKM content, context, and cognitive levels, namely understanding, applying, and reasoning. The results showed that most students demonstrated a moderate level of numeracy literacy; they were relatively capable at the understanding level but experienced difficulties at the applying and reasoning levels, particularly in items with scientific and data contexts. The findings conclude that there is a need to strengthen numeracy instruction oriented toward contextual problem solving and mathematical reasoning. The implications of this study are expected to serve as a reference for teachers and schools in designing numeracy learning strategies aligned with the AKM framework.

Abstract

Although mathematics learning in elementary schools has been widely developed, conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction among second-grade students remains a common problem, particularly because of students’ low ability to understand the meaning of arithmetic operations and their tendency to memorize without deep conceptual understanding. This study aimed to improve conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction through the use of concrete media among second-grade elementary school students. This study used a quantitative approach with a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The research subjects were 20 second-grade elementary school students selected purposively. Data were collected through learning outcome tests, student activity observation sheets, and documentation, and were then analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis to examine improvements in learning outcomes in each cycle. The results showed that the use of concrete media, such as real objects, counting blocks, and number cards, was able to improve students’ conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction. This was evident from the increase in students’ average score from 60 in Cycle I to 80 in Cycle II, as well as the increase in learning mastery from 50% to 85%. In addition, students’ activity and participation in learning also increased. These findings confirm that concrete media play an important role in helping students understand mathematical concepts in a more concrete and meaningful way. The conclusion of this study shows that the use of concrete media can serve as an effective and student-centered learning strategy for improving conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction in the lower grades of elementary school.
