Abstract

Although mathematics anxiety and self-efficacy have received substantial attention in mathematics education, survey-based evidence on elementary students’ affective readiness in numeracy learning remains limited. This study aims to describe the levels of mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy among elementary school students and examine the relationship between the two variables. A quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational survey design was employed, involving 150 fifth-grade students selected through proportionate random sampling. Data were collected using mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy questionnaires, both validated through expert judgment and internal consistency testing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation analysis. The findings indicate that students’ mathematics anxiety was generally at a moderate level, while their mathematics self-efficacy was also categorized as moderate. The correlation analysis revealed a significant negative relationship between mathematics anxiety and mathematics self-efficacy, indicating that students with higher anxiety tended to report lower confidence in learning mathematics. This study contributes to elementary mathematics education by emphasizing the importance of affective factors in strengthening students’ numeracy readiness. The practical implication is that teachers need to create supportive, low-pressure, and confidence-building mathematics learning environments that normalize errors, strengthen mastery experiences, and encourage students to engage more positively with mathematical tasks.

Abstract

Although numeracy learning in elementary schools has received attention in various studies, research that specifically discusses the development of a meaningful numeracy learning model based on mind mapping visualization remains limited. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a mind mapping-based meaningful numeracy learning model in improving elementary school students’ numeracy skills. This study employed a quantitative approach with a Research and Development (R&D) design, involving 30 fifth-grade students of SDN 15 Bonto Jai, Pangkep Regency, who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through expert validation questionnaires, learning outcome tests, observation, and interviews, and were then analyzed using descriptive quantitative techniques and the N-gain test. The results showed that the developed model obtained an average score of 3.72 and was categorized as very valid. The practicality test based on teacher and student responses reached 88.5%, which fell into the very practical category. In addition, the effectiveness test showed an improvement in students’ numeracy skills, with an average N-gain score of 0.68, which was in the moderate-to-high category. These findings indicate that the mind mapping visualization-based learning model is effective in helping students understand mathematical concepts in a more structured, systematic, and meaningful manner. The conclusion of this study affirms the importance of integrating visual media into numeracy learning as an innovative alternative for improving elementary school students’ numeracy skills, while also providing a theoretical contribution to the development of visual-based mathematics learning.

Abstract

Numeracy literacy is a fundamental basic competence for elementary school students in responding to the challenges of everyday life. However, the implementation of numeracy instruction in elementary schools still tends to focus on procedural skills and has not fully developed reasoning abilities in accordance with the demands of the Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum (AKM), as reflected in students’ low ability to solve context- and reasoning-based numeracy problems. This study aimed to analyze the numeracy literacy profile of elementary school students based on the AKM framework. A descriptive method with a qualitative approach supported by quantitative data was employed, conducted at SD 50 Bonto Panno, Pangkep Regency, with 25 Grade V students as participants. Data were collected through an AKM-based numeracy literacy test, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed by categorizing students’ abilities according to the AKM content, context, and cognitive levels, namely understanding, applying, and reasoning. The results showed that most students demonstrated a moderate level of numeracy literacy; they were relatively capable at the understanding level but experienced difficulties at the applying and reasoning levels, particularly in items with scientific and data contexts. The findings conclude that there is a need to strengthen numeracy instruction oriented toward contextual problem solving and mathematical reasoning. The implications of this study are expected to serve as a reference for teachers and schools in designing numeracy learning strategies aligned with the AKM framework.

Abstract

Although mathematics learning in elementary schools has been widely developed, conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction among second-grade students remains a common problem, particularly because of students’ low ability to understand the meaning of arithmetic operations and their tendency to memorize without deep conceptual understanding. This study aimed to improve conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction through the use of concrete media among second-grade elementary school students. This study used a quantitative approach with a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. The research subjects were 20 second-grade elementary school students selected purposively. Data were collected through learning outcome tests, student activity observation sheets, and documentation, and were then analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis to examine improvements in learning outcomes in each cycle. The results showed that the use of concrete media, such as real objects, counting blocks, and number cards, was able to improve students’ conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction. This was evident from the increase in students’ average score from 60 in Cycle I to 80 in Cycle II, as well as the increase in learning mastery from 50% to 85%. In addition, students’ activity and participation in learning also increased. These findings confirm that concrete media play an important role in helping students understand mathematical concepts in a more concrete and meaningful way. The conclusion of this study shows that the use of concrete media can serve as an effective and student-centered learning strategy for improving conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction in the lower grades of elementary school.

Abstract

Character education in early childhood education has become a policy priority, but evidence regarding the effectiveness of contextual project-based learning that integrates observable character habituation in urban early childhood education settings in Indonesia remains limited. This study aimed to model the effectiveness of an eight-week contextual project-based learning program in strengthening discipline, responsibility, cooperation, empathy, and honesty among children aged 5–6 years in Makassar City. The study employed a simulated quasi-experimental design with an analytical dataset comprising 120 simulated child records from six anonymized early childhood education centers, consisting of 60 children in the experimental group and 60 children in the comparison group. The data were represented using a 25-item structured observation instrument and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired comparisons, analysis of covariance controlling for pretest scores, heteroskedasticity-consistent standard errors, effect sizes, and sensitivity analysis. The simulation results showed that the mean score of the experimental group increased from M = 66.83 (SD = 6.91) to M = 79.64 (SD = 7.38), whereas the comparison group increased from M = 66.58 (SD = 6.54) to M = 73.70 (SD = 7.61). After controlling for pretest scores, the between-group difference was estimated at 5.71 points (95% CI = 4.25–7.16; p < 0.001), with a large partial effect size. Cooperation and discipline showed the most consistent improvement, whereas honesty demonstrated the smallest effect. These simulated findings indicate that contextual project-based learning has the potential to provide children with repeated, meaningful, and social experiences in practicing character values through actions rather than solely through verbal instruction. Theoretically, this study integrates social-emotional learning, self-regulation, guided play, and the character strengths perspective, while practically, the results can serve as a basis for teachers’ instructional planning, observational assessment, and the development of locally contextualized projects. However, because all research data were simulated, these findings require verification through empirical studies involving actual participants, preregistered protocols, longer follow-up periods, and multilevel analysis.
