Abstract

Abstract: This one shot pre-test post-test design was aimedto find out the effects of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)method towards the ability of the first year students of SMA N 10Pekanbaru in comprehending text. This study answered thefollowing research question:”is there any significant effect DRTAmethod to reading comprehension achievement of the first yearstudents of SMA N 10 Pekanbaru in comprehending text?”Theparticipants were 36 students of the first year students of SMANegeri 10 Pekanbaru. The time of this research was on academic2014-2015, from august - October at SMA N 10 Pekanbaru. Thisschool is located on St.bukitbarisan, Pekanbaru. The data wascollected by using pre-test and post-test. The data was analyzed byusing SPSS Aplication. The research finding of this research showedthat there is significant effect of Directed Reading Thinking Activitytowards the ability of the first year students of SMA N 10 Pekanbaruin comprehending reading text.the finding also proved that in thepre-test students’ average score was 6.82 and after the treatmentapplied there is contribution in post-test score 0.74.Keywords: Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA), Comprehending Reading Text,one shot pre-test post-test design.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the students’ ability in comprehending recount text. The aim was to find out students ability in comprehending the text. This descriptive research took place in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru from March to April 2015. The sample was 40 students from VIII2 class that took by using cluster random sampling. In collecting the data, there were 30 questions that included in this test. The duration time for doing the test was 40 minutes. The data was analyzed by calculating the students’ score individually and finding out the mean score. The students’ score classified into four level mastery; they are: poor, poor to average, average to good, and good to excellent. The data was presented by using graphic. Based on the result finding of this research, the students’ ability in comprehending recount text at second grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Pekanbaru was in poor to average level. Meanwhile, the mean score of the whole students’ scores was 52.6.Keywords: Students’ Ability, Comprehending Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: Based on the writer’s preliminary study, it was found that, the students could not apply their reading to other reading texts, they only knew about readings in their text book at the school. This problem was caused by some factors. For example, some students could not understand about content of reading text and identify the detailed information of the text. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about this problem. The research was administered at SMP N 21 Pekanbaru. The subject of the research is the second year students at SMP N 21 Pekanbaru, and the object of this research is the using Predict, Organize, Rehearse, Practice and Evaluate method to improve reading comprehension. This research is Pre-Experimental design and the type of the research is the Static-Group Comparison.The population of this research was all of the second year students. The total number of population was 371 students. Because the number of population was large, the researcher used cluster sampling by taking two classes only as sample; VIII.3 consisted of 38 students as experimental group, and VIII.5 consisted of 38 students as control group, so the numbers of sample from two classes were 76 students. To analyze the data, the researcher adopted paired sample t-test formula by using SPSS. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that there is significant effect of using PORPE method to improve reading comprehension the second year students of SMP N 21 Pekanbaru, where T-table is at the 5% grade of significance that refers to 2.02. While in the level of significance 1% is 2.72. Therefore, it can be analysis that to is higher than t table in either at 5% or 1% grade of significance. Abstract

Abstract: This classroom action research was aimed to find out if the Directed Reading Thinking Activitystrategy could improve the students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts of the second year students of SMAN5 Pekanbaru. The class XI IPA 7 became the subject of the research, the participants were 39.The data were collected by using of tests, observations, and field notes. The data were analyzed byquantitative data and qualitative data. The research finding showed that the implementation of Directed Reading Thinking Activitystrategy as the teaching strategy could improve students’ ability in comprehending narrative texts both at the first cycle and second cycle.It was also proved that applying the procedures of Directed Reading Thinking Activitystrategy in teaching reading could raise students’ predictions, before reading, during and after reading in comprehendings narrative text, and motivation to shared with their friends in groups.Keywords: Directed Reading Thinking Activity Strategy, Students’ Reading Ability, Comprehending Narrative Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research was a study on the speaking ability of the second year students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru.The aim of this research was to know about the second year students speaking ability at SMAN 10 Pekanbaru. The population of this research was the second year students of SMAN 10 Pekanbaru that divided into 9 classes, with total 297 students. The sample of this research was class X1 IPA 2, XI IPA 3, XI IPA 4, and XI IPS 2, with total 117 students.The instrument of this research was interview. In conducting this research, there were ten questions in interview which used to know the students’ speaking ability based on five aspects: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. To get the quantitative data in this research, the three raters were involved to give the scores of students speaking ability. From the result of the oral test in five aspects of speaking ability, the writer concluded that the average score of students’ ability in speaking from the first rater was 57.74, it was categorized as mediocre level. From the second rater was 58,15, it was categorized as mediocre level. From third rater it was 58,54 it was categorized as mediocre level. From the three raters in five aspects of speaking ability, the average of speaking ability of students at the second year of SMA Negeri 10 Pekanbaru were 58.14, it was categorized into mediocre level. The research finding also shows that students got the highest mean score in terms comprehension and got the lowest mean score in terms of pronunciation.Keywords : descriptive research, students’ speaking ability

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out students’ factors and reasons of reluctance to speak English at the English Department FKIP UNRI. This is a descriptive research conducted by survey design. The instrument administered in this research was questionnaire containing 27 close-ended questions and 7 open-ended questions. The population of this research was 113 of the second semester English department students at FKIP UNRI and the sample of this research were IIB class and IIC class of second semester English Department students. The total number of students is 76 students. The collected data were analyzed using likert scale in order to know the factors and reasons of students’ reluctance to speak English. The result of data analysis showed that there are two factor of students’ reluctance to speak English. The first one is language factor which consists of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. The second one is psychological factor which consists of lack of confidence, shyness, anxiety and motivation. The reasons of students’ reluctance base on each factor are afraid of being laughed while mispronouncing, difficulty in constructing sentences and using tenses, difficulty in using exact words, afraid of losing face, afraid of being looked as foolish, peer correction and influence of friends. In conclusion, the language factor and psychological factor contribute in the students’ reluctance to speak English at English Department FKIP UNRI. The highest index percentage on pronunciation indicator indicated that the students had problem with their pronunciation in speaking English and the highest index percentage on lack of confidence indicator indicated that the students had lower self-rating in speaking.Key Words: Reluctance, Language Factor, Psychological Factor

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether there are significant effects of information gap technique on the speaking ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Sungai Apit. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test – treatment – post-test design. This research used one group pre-test post-test design.The instrument used in this research was tests (pre-test and post-test). The population of this research was 113 of the Second Year Students of SMPN 1 Sungai Apit and the sample of this research was VIII 2 of SMPN 1 Sungai Apit which is total number of students of class was 20 students. Cluster random sampling method was used to select one class to be the sample. The data of this research were collected by giving the speaking tests (pretest-posttest) to the students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed the mean score of pre-test was 52.47 and the mean score of post-test was 67.20.Based on the data analysis, It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test because the t-test observed was higher than t-table. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this researchwas accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It also meant that teaching speaking by using information gap technique was effective to improve the students’ speaking ability. Keywords: Speaking Ability, Information Gap, Technique

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text and to know the students’ lowest and highest score of reading comprehension components. The problems to be discussed are: how is the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai in reading comprehension of analytical exposition and which component is the students’ lowest and highest score in reading comprehension. The population of this research is all of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai with the total is 170 students. The writer used Cluster Random Sampling technique to decide the research sample. This research used reading test as instrument which consisted of 40 multiple choice questions about 8 components of reading comprehension. After that, the instrument was tried out to make sure the validity and realibility of the test. From the data, it was found that the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Benai in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text is categorized into average level with the mean score 59,67. The findings also show that vocabulary component is the lowest score by the students with the mean score 51,86. On the other hand, social function component is the highest score by students the with the mean score 64,81. From the findings, further research can focus on the way to improve the students’ vocabulary in reading comprehension.Keywords: Ability, Reading Comprehension, Analytical Exposition text

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive quantitative research was aimed to find out the ability of the second grade students of MA Darul Istiqomah Kemuning Inhil in writing recount texts. The sample of the research was 40 students in the second grade of MA Darul Istiqomah Kemuning. The data were obtained from students’ ability in writing a recount text. The writing test was used as the test to assess the students’ ability. The time allocation was 60 minutes for the entire test. The data were scored by three raters by using writing scoring system that assesses five aspects of writing: content, grammar, organization, vocabulary and mechanics. The finding showed that the students had a good ability level in writing recount texts which means that students were able to write the recount text in English well. It was found out that the students’ ability in terms of content was the highest among other aspects with the category score level is good and the lowest score was in terms of mechanics with the category score level is fair. From the findings, it is suggested the students need to do more practice in writing English texts and improve their writing especially in terms of grammar and mechanics.Key Words: Ability, Writing, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract: This research was designed to describe the student’s ability in comprehending descriptive texts and aimed to find out the students ability in comprehending descriptive texts for each component and the level of Bloom’s Taxonomy Revised indicated in the ability. This research was conducted at SMPN 38 Pekanbaru that collected April to May 2017. The try out class was VIII-3 (30 students) and the sample was VIII-1 (30 students) chosen by cluster random sampling. The result showed that the ability of the second year students of SMPN 38 Pekanbaru in comprehending descriptive texts for each component is in good level which the mean score was 61.7, however, the students have not passed the minimum score of the school which is 75. For the level of remembering; finding factual information the mean score was 78, finding meaning of difficult words was 40.7. The level of understanding (finding references) the mean score was 76. For the analyzing level; finding main idea the mean score was 55.3, finding restatement was 50, and the level of evaluating (finding social function) was 70. Therefore, this research suggested the English teachers to focus on the level and components that students still find difficulities and categorized them into poor level. Students should learn the components in descriptive texts and other text types. Further researchers are expected to find the standard guidance of classification of Bloom’s Taxonomy Revised indicated the components of reading comprehension.Key Words: Student’s Ability, Bloom’s Taxonomy Revised, Comprehending Descriptive Texts.
