Abstract

This research is motivated by the low ability of students to write descriptive texts in German, which is largely caused by the use of conventional learning methods and limited active student involvement in the learning process. The aim of this study is to improve students’ writing skills through the implementation of PjBL that emphasizes collaborative and reflective project activities. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles, involving 36 eleventh-grade students as subjects. Data collection techniques included observations of student activities and descriptive text writing tests, while data analysis was carried out using both quantitative and qualitative descriptive approaches by comparing learning outcomes between cycles. The results indicated a significant improvement in students’ writing performance: the average score increased from 65 in cycle I to 82 in cycle II, while the completion rate rose from 30.56% to 86.11%. Observational data revealed that students actively engaged in group discussions, confidently expressed ideas, responded to peer feedback, and demonstrated higher motivation in completing writing tasks. Furthermore, the quality of their descriptive texts improved, particularly in terms of structure, vocabulary, grammar accuracy, and creativity. These findings suggest that the PjBL model effectively enhances not only students’ descriptive writing skills but also their collaboration, critical thinking, and creative expression. The study theoretically contributes to the growing literature on PjBL in foreign language education, providing evidence of its impact on student learning outcomes. Practically, the findings serve as a valuable reference for teachers aiming to develop innovative, student-centered, and effective strategies for teaching descriptive writing in German, promoting active learning and sustained engagement in the classroom

Abstract

In contemporary tourism and hospitality education, communicative competence is increasingly multimodal and digitally mediated. However, conventional assessments often fail to capture this complexity. Thus, this study examines the use of a multimodal video project to assess communicative language performance at a private tourism and hospitality school in Indonesia. The participants were 30 fourth-semester undergraduate students who worked collaboratively to produce short tourism promotion videos integrating spoken language, visual imagery, and audio elements. Data were collected through classroom observations, rubric-based performance assessments, analysis of student-produced video artefacts, and semi-structured interviews with 18 purposively selected students. The assessment focused on key components of communicative performance, including fluency, grammatical accuracy, pronunciation, vocabulary use, coherence, and multimodal integration. Findings revealed that the project provided an authentic assessment context, capturing both linguistic and paralinguistic features, while students highlighted motivation and engagement as critical to their participation. Although perceived as a fair assessment method, challenges in time management, technical skills, linguistic demands, and group coordination emerged. The study advocates for a shift in ESP assessment practices towards incorporating multimodal, performance-based tasks that reflect real-world communication and digital literacy skills.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to communicate the precision of the translation of the children's story presented in the Let's Read mobile application. Utilizing Angelelli's assessment rubric, the focus is on evaluating the accuracy of the translation of children's literature. Through a thorough analysis of the translation of the Indonesian story, the research unveils both strengths and weaknesses in the translation process, shedding light on the challenges encountered in adapting the text for young Indonesian readers. The research methodology involved is qualitative with content analysis approach, selecting the story of English and its Indonesian translation  from the Let's Read mobile application. The translations were then assessed using Angelelli's scoring rubric. The findings contribute significantly to the ongoing discourse on the assessment of translation quality, particularly within the realm of children's literature. These results provide valuable insights for refining the translation process and enriching the reading experience for young users of the Let's Read mobile app. Additionally, the research underscores the importance of accurately conveying the meaning of source texts to preserve the educational and entertainment value of translated children's literature. It emphasizes the necessity for cultural sensitivity and adaptation to create captivating and relevant reading experiences for children from diverse backgrounds

Abstract

Background. The ability to translate is a crucial skill for EFL students and helps overcome language barriers. This study investigates the improvement of translation skills at Universitas Indraprasta PGRI and explains the types of componential assessment (skills assessment) as an effective translation strategy to increase students' proficiency. Purpose. This study aims to improve translation skills among students at Universitas Indraprasta PGRI by using componential assessment as a strategy to enhance their proficiency. Method. An undergraduate class of fifty students in a Translation course participated in this study. The research utilizes a sequential explanatory design, beginning with an Indonesian-to-English translation proficiency test followed by a content analysis of the translations. The study focuses on assessing lexical-semantic, cultural, pragmatic, and grammatical skills through componential assessment. Results. The quantitative results indicated that the quality of translations was generally poor. The primary reason for this was the participants' insufficient mastery of both Indonesian and English, which made achieving equivalency challenging. The qualitative analysis revealed that students faced difficulties in several areas:Lexical-semantic skills; Cultural skills; Pragmatic skills; Grammatical skills. Translation mistakes were predominantly found in grammar, specifically: Pluralization; Capitalization; Inflection of words; Present tense usage; Agreement between subject and verb participles; Use of demonstrative pronouns and fragments representing them. Conclusion. The findings of this study highlight the importance of effective translation teaching methods, particularly in Indonesian universities where students are expected to have a strong command of both Indonesian and English. Improving these methods can significantly enhance students' translation skills and overall language proficiency.

Abstract

The development of technology has rapidly affected the growth complexity of the 21st century's work environment which also influences educational environment. Thus, approaches in teaching and learning such as self-determined learning has been considered relevant to enhance the quality of learning. Researchers and educators have been pursuing to accomodate the praxis of self-determined learning. The purpose of the study was to uncover research trends and try to bridge the gap of future research of self-determined learning (SDL) in the English as a foreign language (EFL) context. Using meta-synthesis, 13 selected articles were examined drawn from a single database from the last five years between 2017 and 2021. The articles were systematically selected through several criteria using the query "Self-determined Learning+AND+EFL" in the Sopus database. They contributed to the growing interest related to research and practice of heutagogy or SDL. Results showed that research areas of SDL had been widely investigated in different levels of students; primary (23%), secondary (23%), and university (54%). In addition, a few research studies were conducted to examine students' language skills and language components (listening and vocabulary) (15%). It implicated that many EFL research area could be investigated from different levels and focus in the future.
