Abstract

The decline of substantive religiosity among adolescents is an important issue in religious education, considering its impact on character formation and morality. This study aims to analyze and compare the level of substantive religiosity across four types of secondary schools in Bandung: State Junior High School, Private Junior High School, State Tsanawiyah Madrasah, and Private Tsanawiyah Madrasah. Data were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test and the Tukey HSD post hoc test. The results showed significant differences in substantive religiosity between types of schools, F(3,438)=10.04, p = 0,001. Post hoc tests confirmed that Private Tsanawiyah Madrasah students showed significantly higher substantive religiosity than students in other schools. The biggest difference is seen in the ritualistic dimension, followed by the consequential dimension, while the ideological dimension shows minimal differences between schools. Although the structure and type of school influence substantive religiosity, particularly ritual practices, the gap between knowledge and behavior remains small in all schools. This indicates that external factors, such as family support, peer influence, and social media, are significant in shaping religious values into actual behaviors. This research emphasizes the importance of a holistic and collaborative approach involving family, peers, and community in developing substantive religiosity in adolescents.

Abstract

This study investigates the structure and relevance of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teaching materials at Padjadjaran University, focusing on their impact on student learning outcomes and the effectiveness of instructional media. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing thematic and content analysis. Data were gathered through interviews with lecturers, classroom observations, and an in-depth review of Semester Learning Plans (RPS) and PowerPoint (PPT) teaching materials. The analysis shows that current PAI materials successfully incorporate key themes such as Islamic moderation and anti-corruption values. However, they fall short in fostering active student engagement and interactivity. The use of static media, such as text-heavy PPTs, limits the development of critical thinking and practical application. To address these issues, the study recommends enhancing teaching materials with multimedia content and real-world case studies. Furthermore, aligning the curriculum with Outcome-Based Education (OBE) principles could strengthen the development of global competencies and 21st-century skills within an Islamic ethical framework. Improving PAI teaching materials through multimedia integration and OBE alignment can significantly enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. These strategies offer practical pathways to better prepare students to navigate contemporary challenges while upholding Islamic values.

Abstract

Affective assessment in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) plays a strategic role in shaping students’ character holistically and contextually. However, little is known about how IRE teachers integrate local and spiritual values into assessment practices at the junior high school level. This study uses a qualitative approach with an instrumental case study involving four IRE teachers at a public junior high school in Bandung. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. Findings show that affective assessment was implemented through adaptive strategies grounded in local cultural values such as someah (hospitality and respect) and silih asih (mutual care and compassion). These practices were reinforced by reflective and collaborative approaches, revealing contextual and sustainable dimensions of affective assessment. This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating how local and spiritual values enrich affective assessment in IRE and offers a novel perspective on contextualized character education. Practical implications include the need for standardized affective assessment instruments, continuous professional development for teachers, and integration of affective assessment into curriculum policy as a transformative pedagogical tool.

Abstract

Assessment in Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam/PAI) plays a crucial role in fostering not only students’ cognitive achievement but also their practical religious skills and moral character. However, implementing holistic assessment across cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains remains challenging within real school contexts. This study aims to examine barriers, strategies, and contextual factors influencing the implementation of PAI assessment at the junior secondary level. Employing a qualitative instrumental case study design, the study involved four PAI teachers at a public junior secondary school in Bandung, Indonesia. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis, and analyzed inductively using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model with source and method triangulation to ensure trustworthiness. The findings reveal that cognitive assessment is constrained by students’ heterogeneous abilities and limited instructional time; psychomotor assessment is challenged by uneven student readiness and insufficient foundational religious skills; while affective assessment is hindered by subjectivity, diverse student attitudes, and the absence of standardized assessment guidelines. These domain-specific challenges are further compounded by contextual factors such as weak Qur’anic literacy, limited parental support, student absenteeism, and conflicts with school agendas. Despite these obstacles, teachers adopted adaptive strategies including differentiated assessment, remedial support, peer tutoring, parental collaboration, and integration of assessment into daily religious practices. The study concludes that effective PAI assessment requires a holistic, adaptive, and collaborative approach that integrates all learning domains while remaining sensitive to socio-religious and institutional contexts. The findings highlight implications for teacher professional development, refinement of assessment rubrics, and supportive school policies to strengthen sustainable and authentic PAI assessment practices.

Abstract

Abstract The evaluation of learning in the affective domain plays a crucial role in supporting the character formation of elementary school students. This study aims to explore the implementation of affective assessment in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) learning at a public elementary school in Bandung. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Data were analyzed through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that teachers understand affective assessment as an evaluation of students’ attitudes, engagement, and behavior; however, documentation practices remain limited and are predominantly conducted orally. Planning and assessment strategies vary, combining traditional techniques, role modeling, and religious routines, yet the use of formal instruments has not been consistent. Therefore, this study proposes a simple and adaptive affective assessment instrument for elementary schools. These findings underscore the need to strengthen teacher capacity, ensure consistent use of instruments, and provide policy support so that affective assessment can function optimally in fostering students’ character development. Abstract

Assessment in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) plays a strategic role in measuring cognitive achievement while simultaneously internalizing religious values. This aligns with the theory of assessment for learning, which emphasizes assessment as a continuous process of constructive feedback and Bloom’s taxonomy as a reference for developing cognitive questions from lower to higher-order thinking. This study analyzes the cognitive assessment practices of PAI teachers at a junior high school in Bandung, covering teachers’ understanding, planning, implementation, use of assessment results, and professional development. A qualitative approach with an instrumental case study design was employed, involving four purposively selected PAI teachers. Data were collected through structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis of teaching modules, test items, and rubrics, then analyzed using Huberman’s stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal that assessment planning is supported by curriculum and MGMP forums, though rubrics remain holistic; implementation combines various techniques but written tests dominate; results are used for remedial; while professional development occurs through MGMP but still requires practical training on HOTS and analytic rubrics. This study contributes by mapping the contextual assessment cycle of PAI and recommending rubric strengthening, differentiation, and continuous professional development, enabling assessment to function as both a driver of holistic learning and a medium for value internalization.
