Abstract

Purpose – This study explores the integration of Islamic values and Javanese cultural rituals in early childhood arts education within the Komunitas Lima Gunung in Central Java, Indonesia. It investigates how community-based rituals—such as Merti Dusun, Sungkem Tlompak, and Jaran Papat—serve as pedagogical spaces for the development of children’s aesthetic, spiritual, and socio-cognitive capacities. Addressing a gap in formal early childhood education, which often excludes local traditions and Islamic spiritual values, this study offers an alternative model rooted in cultural continuity and lived practice.Design/methods/approach –  Employing a participatory ethnographic approach, the study involved in-depth interviews, direct observation, photo documentation, and ritual participation within seven community art centers. Data were interpreted using theoretical frameworks including Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), Funds of Knowledge, and Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), to understand how children learn through culturally meaningful interaction.Findings – The study reveals that children’s engagement in ritual performance enhances their spiritual literacy, narrative cognition, and sense of belonging. These processes occur through embodied participation, intergenerational storytelling, symbolic aesthetics, and moral learning embedded in Islamic-Javanese rituals. The study also shows how the absence of formal educators is compensated by the community’s collective pedagogical roles.Research implications/limitations – This study is context-specific and based on a single ethno-regional setting. It does not measure long-term developmental outcomes or compare with other regions. However, it provides qualitative depth and cultural insight into the ways informal, non-institutional education functions effectively within Islamic and indigenous contexts.Practical implications – The findings highlight the need for integrating local Islamic cultural practices into early childhood curricula. The model suggests a framework for community-based religious-cultural education that promotes identity, empathy, and critical thinking through art.  Originality/value – This research offers a rare ethnographic insight into how Islamic-Javanese rituals function as aesthetic and moral education for young children. It challenges dominant models of early childhood education by proposing a culturally embedded, spiritually rooted, and community-led pedagogy.Paper type Research paper

Abstract

The Musicality Assessment Test is a notation-based examination covering three concepts: ear training, listening, and reading. Due to the incorporation of these three conceptual domains, the musicality test can only be effectively conducted when the test questions are presented in audio format. The aim of this study was to innovate the testing process as a means of assessing music learning outcomes through an audio-based format. This study employed qualitative descriptive method, and utilized Sibelius and Cubase software as technological tools. The design phase began with the preparation of the structured test instrument, followed by the recording process using Sibelius software. This involved recording questions related to rhythmic, pitch, interval, melodic, scale, and harmonic notation, which were then transformed into MIDI format. Cubase software was employed for combining human voice with MIDI in the recording process. The testing instrument was meticulously crafted as an innovative product, ready for trial to measure the musicality abilities of test takers. The test tool was designed as an innovative product, poised for use in assessing the musicality skills of test takers.

Abstract

Madihin is a traditional Banjarese oral performance art that combines rhythmic improvisation, poetic verses, humor, and the beating of the tarbang (frame drum). More than mere entertainment, Madihin historically functioned as a medium of advice, social commentary, and community bonding. However, in the context of modernization and globalization, both its functions and modes of presentation have been reshaped. This study aims to analyze the continuity and transformation of Madihin by focusing on its changing functions, performance forms, and cultural significance in contemporary society. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews with prominent pamadihinan (performers), field observations, and documentation analysis. The findings reveal that Madihin has shifted from its traditional role as a vehicle of moral counsel and communal entertainment to a more diverse medium encompassing education, tourism promotion, and even political communication. Performance innovations such as Madihin hip-hop and Madihin dangdutillustrate how this oral tradition adapts to popular cultural trends while preserving its improvisational core and symbolic values. At the same time, the challenges of regeneration among younger generations highlight the fragile continuity of this art. This research demonstrates that the sustainability of Madihin relies on its capacity for innovation without losing its cultural identity, offering broader insight into how oral performance traditions negotiate relevance, identity, and authenticity in the face of social and cultural change.

Abstract

Traditional performing arts play a vital role in transmitting cultural values across generations. In Siulak Mukai, Kerinci Regency, the Balahak performance serves not only as a festive tradition but also as a medium of cultural and character education. This study explores how Balahak functions as an ethnopedagogical tool within community-based art education. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participatory observation of Balahak performances, in-depth interviews with local artists, community leaders, and participants, and analysis of related documentation. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, with triangulation techniques employed to ensure validity. Findings show that Balahak performances consist of three stages—preparation, core, and reflection—which facilitate cultural value transmission and skill regeneration. Elements such as music, poetry, symbolic roles, and inclusive participation enable informal learning rooted in local traditions. Community members of all ages engage actively, creating a dynamic space for intergenerational education.Balahak reflects key principles of ethnopedagogy by embedding cultural knowledge, social norms, and character values within an experiential and communal art form. Its structure supports cultural preservation and strengthens identity, making it a viable model for integrating indigenous knowledge into formal and non-formal art education.

Abstract

This study examines how Dulmuluk theater—a traditional performing art from Palembang, Indonesia—can be integrated into formal education as a medium for character development and social transformation. While recognized as cultural heritage, its pedagogical use in schools remains underexplored. A qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological approach was employed to understand the lived experiences of educators and students involved in Dulmuluk-based learning. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with 3 teachers and 6 students, documentation review, and audiovisual materials. Thematic analysis was used to interpret the data. Findings revealed that Dulmuluk theater effectively conveys moral values such as honesty, discipline, environmental awareness, respect for parents, social solidarity, and responsibility. These values are internalized through a three-stage process: understanding (exploration of scripts and character analysis), application (performance-based learning and collaboration), and habituation (reflection and behavior reinforcement). Students demonstrated improved moral reasoning, social interaction, and empathy through their engagement with the theater. The integration of Dulmuluk into character education aligns with constructivist and socio-cultural learning theories by fostering experiential, affective, and culturally relevant learning. It serves as a powerful tool for reinforcing local values, enhancing emotional literacy, and supporting inclusive, democratic learning environments. The study recommends formal curriculum integration and teacher training to support this approach.

Abstract

Madihin is a traditional Banjar oral art form that conveys moral, religious, and cultural values through poetry and humor. However, globalization and digitalization have challenged its continuity, especially among younger generations. This study investigates how Madihin is being revitalized through digital platforms and its function as a medium for cultural and character education in South Kalimantan. Using a qualitative approach with a digital ethnography framework, the study collected data through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and analysis of online Madihin content on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Participants included Madihin practitioners, educators, students, and cultural stakeholders. Findings reveal that digital media has expanded the reach of Madihin, increased youth engagement, and fostered creative innovations. Madihin supports character education by embedding values such as honesty, respect, and social responsibility into engaging performances. It also promotes digital literacy by encouraging ethical media use and critical thinking. However, challenges such as content commodification, authenticity loss, and digital inequality persist. Madihin’s revitalization in the digital era highlights the adaptive potential of traditional arts in contemporary education. To ensure sustainability, collaboration among schools, communities, and government bodies is essential. When aligned with educational goals and cultural identity, Madihin can function as both an instructional tool and a medium for cultural preservation.

Abstract

Kemidi Rudat, a traditional Sasak theater from Lombok, functions as a nonformal educational medium that transmits cultural, moral, and religious values through performance. While its aesthetic and historical aspects have been previously studied, limited research has examined its pedagogical role amidst sociocultural change, particularly the interplay of conservative and liberal educational values. This study employs a qualitative case study approach at the Panca Pesona Art Studio, using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed through the Miles and Huberman interactive model to explore how nonformal learning practices within Kemidi Rudat integrate preservation and innovation. Findings show that conservative values emphasize authenticity, such as traditional language, music, and etiquette, promoting cultural identity and character education. Liberal values, meanwhile, allow for innovation through story adaptation, use of modern instruments, and inclusivity, making the art form more appealing to younger generations. The Panca Pesona Studio mediates these values through a hybrid pedagogical model that balances tradition with creativity. Rather than conflicting, conservative and liberal perspectives function complementarily—conservatism anchors authenticity, while liberalism ensures relevance and sustainability. This dialectical learning model supports the preservation of cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary challenges. The study offers practical implications for educators, policymakers, and cultural practitioners in strengthening community-based arts education.
