Abstract

A new rule known as Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM), also known as Emancipated Learning - Independent Campus, aims to encourage students' independence in the development of their academic interests and motivation. Research on the implementation and effects of the MBKM Policy is still urgently needed because it is a new educational policy in Indonesia. This study aims to: 1) investigate English students' opinions of how the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka Program has been implemented at the English Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang; and 2) investigate English students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to take part in the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka Program. As many as 25 students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang who participated in the MBKM program make up the sample of this study. Interviews and questionnaires were used to gather data. The findings showed that both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including: 1) Intrinsic factors (challenging, curiosity, developing oneself, learning new things, increasing soft and hard skills, being an intelligent student and exploring the ability and knowledge); and 2) Extrinsic factors (getting a good job, getting the reward, gaining appreciation/praise from the environment, and getting money from the government), influence students to participate in the MBKM program. MBKM has been successfully implemented, in the opinion of the students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang, and it has been well worth the effort. Students can benefit from learning support services such as the best experience, personal growth, better English proficiency, optimal learning, and significant advancement with the help of the MBKM Program. The MBKM Program's capacity to inspire students may have a favorable impact on their ability to advance professionally, improve their quality of life, and succeed academically.

Abstract

EFL classes are offered at the secondary school level in Indonesia. To ensure the success of the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom, educators in the field must use effective pedagogical practices. Assessing teachers' performance in the classroom can have far-reaching implications on the quality of education in the classroom. A useful strategy is to analyze the pupils' perspectives. Research was therefore done to detail which techniques students found useful and which they found less, as well as the reasons behind these judgments. Twenty-nine college students participated in this study via a systematic random sampling strategy. Focus group discussion (FGD) was used to collect data, which was then analyzed descriptively using a qualitative methodology. First, the analysis revealed that (1) students viewed the Communicative Method, Cooperative Learning, the Competency-Based approach, and Community Language Learning as effective strategies for teaching and learning languages. While the Lecturing Method, the Grammar-Translation Method, the Direct Method, and the Task-Based Method are all considered inefficient. (2) The strategies that students found useful and those that they found ineffective. (3) Three distinct senses will recognize an efficient strategy. These include studying outside the class, reviewing material from the previous session, and repeating it before moving on to the new one.

Abstract

This research investigates the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' views, experiences, and expectations toward plagiarism practices in Indonesian higher education. The researchers employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. Ten EFL students conveniently participated in this study. The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. This study showed that EFL students view plagiarism as an act of taking someone's idea, a bad habit, intentional and unintentional. EFL students' experience with plagiarism revealed that they committed plagiarism due to a lack of understanding and unfamiliarity with the plagiarism concept. Besides, the students reported being too lazy and less likely to read. EFL students expect to reduce plagiarism by being more active in reading and providing free workshop seminars, and lecturers must strictly apply the rules. Moreover, instilling self-motivation, receiving advice and feedback from the lecturer, understanding the definition of plagiarism, having the desire to read, enhancing personal awareness, doing Turnitin checker, using an application, and self-confidence were their expectations of reducing plagiarism practices.

Abstract

There have been various conceptualizations about the implementation of task-based language teaching (TBLT) in the context of English language teaching. TBLT has been proposed as a potentially efficacious approach for instructing English as a second language (ESL) in Asian settings, such as Indonesia. The present study aimed to investigate the optimal implementation of TBLT for higher education students in ESP classrooms. A cohort comprising seventy ESP students pursuing a degree in the Accounting Study Program participated as research subjects. This research used a descriptive quantitative research method. The results show that the implementation of TBLT into the teaching of speaking skills resulted in beneficial result concerning students in ESP classrooms. The findings of this study indicate a statistically significant increase in the mean scores of oral English proficiencies among students enrolled in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, as seen by the comparison between pretest and post-test scores. This study can be implemented by providing opportunities for students to engage in spoken language practice rather than learning sessions primarily focused on the explicit instruction of grammatical rules and ESP students’ comprehensibility. This study can be applied in TBLT approach in the ESP classroom setting for comprehensibility in EFL students' oral English.

Abstract

This article examines Indonesian universities and colleges' TEFL trends, difficulties, and innovations. With English as a worldwide language, the study emphasizes the necessity of English language education in Indonesia, especially in higher education. It addresses the use of technology in TEFL, the trend toward communicative language instruction, and the concentration on teaching English for specific reasons. Following a comprehensive examination and analysis, the study concluded that although online resources for language and culture learning are growing in popularity, educators especially those with greater experience continue to face challenges in successfully incorporating technology into their lessons. The survey looks at how students feel about TEFL programs, how they feel about using technology to learn languages, and how they feel about how it affects their ability to communicate across cultures. In order to enhance TEFL instruction and technology pedagogical topic understanding, the study also places a strong emphasis on teacher professional development. The report recommends that Indonesian colleges and institutions improve their TEFL programs in light of these facts. These include innovative instructional strategies, upgrades to facilities, and teacher preparation courses that use technology. These concepts educate language, intercultural communication, and global citizenship with the goal of enhancing TEFL instruction in Indonesia.
