Abstract

Religion, as a belief system and value system, continues to race against time to always adapt and update its beliefs, values and institutional tools in dealing with new situations in the current modern era so that its owners do not want to be abandoned. The biggest religious challenge in the current of modernization is that truth is no longer always referred to God's law because in this modern era everything can be realized and can be proven with science where there is a condition of people's helplessness to refuse to consume various new products This article aims to provide an overview of the importance of Islam as a religion in today's modern era. This article was written using a qualitative approach supported by literature study methods based on data mining through library research from several literature sources. From the results of the study, it is clear that Islam still has a very important role and cannot be replaced by technology in the modern era. In this case, Islam can play the role of being a fortress for modern human life. Islam teaches its followers various solutions to answer the problems of modern human life. Islam makes its adherents aware that the practice of worship (in the broadest sense) is to be carried out sincerely without seeing that it is an obligation. This ensures that the phenomenon of modern life which erodes human faith is not a reason not to try to improve it, but instead makes this current of modernity a reference for continuing to increase piety.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of figurative symbols in Minangkabau proverbs using a discourse analysis approach to understand the symbolic relationship between language, culture, and environment in the oral tradition of the Minangkabau people. The study focuses on identifying forms of figurative symbols based on Michael C. Haley's Theory of human perception space, which includes the categories of human, living, and terrestrial. This research used a qualitative descriptive method through content analysis of 1000 Minangkabau proverbs by Idrus Hakimy as well as employed field observations. The analysis was carried out by mapping figurative symbols into nine categories of human perception and interpreting their meanings in a sociocultural context. The results showed that the human Category dominates with a proportion of 42.7%, followed by the living category (16.1%), while the terrestrial Category only accounts for 0.9%. Theoretically, this study expands the application of Haley's perception framework in the local Minangkabau context, revealing the close interaction between human perception, ecological experience, and cultural wisdom. Practically, this study confirms the role of proverbs as a medium for preserving local wisdom values and a means of cultural education. Thus, Minangkabau proverbs have been functioned as a cognitive archive of ecological culture that preserves, passes on, and strengthens the community's cultural identity amid changing times.

Abstract

Abstract

Organic and inorganic waste management in Indonesia is a major challenge due to the high volume of household waste. In Kemplong Village, Pekalongan, the problem of organic and inorganic waste is exacerbated by a lack of awareness and limited processing facilities, leading to waste accumulation, resulting in pollution and health risks. The Community Service Program (KKN) 62 of UIN Gusdur Pekalongan took the initiative to address this problem by integrating the Waste Bank Unit (BSU) and stacked bucket composters as an integrated solution. The program involved outreach, participation, and practical training during the KKN period, involving the BSU group and housewives. Results showed a reduction in unmanaged waste, increased public awareness, and the production of three active composters, supporting SDG 11. Key challenges include the short duration of the program and reliance on voluntary participation. Strengthening collaboration with local governments is needed for ongoing monitoring, training in marketing recycled products, and the development of waste management infrastructure.

Abstract

Higher education plays a crucial role in human resource development, but limited funding and low scholarship literacy remain barriers for graduates seeking further study. This community service activity aims to improve scholarship literacy and participant readiness for the Indonesia Bangkit Scholarship selection process through an interactive online sharing session. The PkM activity employed a service learning approach and was held on May 20, 2025, featuring scholarship awardees to share strategies for registration, document preparation, and skills development. Forty-eight online participants attended the activity, and an impact evaluation was conducted using a post-activity satisfaction survey that assessed the usefulness, clarity of the material, and participants' readiness to prepare application documents. The evaluation results showed that participants found the activity beneficial and reported increased readiness in developing further study plans and preparing for selection. Overall, the sharing session, based on awardee experiences, has the potential to become an easily replicable empowerment model to expand access to scholarship information and strengthen readiness for further study.

Abstract

Deaf students in higher education still face barriers in verbal communication that affect academic participation, social interaction, and self-confidence in various campus situations. This condition indicates the need for communication media that are more adaptive, practical, and easy to use in everyday interactions. This community service program aims to improve the communication skills of deaf students through the use of a “talking bottle” as an interactive communication medium in an inclusive campus environment. The program was implemented using a participatory approach, which included technical training on the use of the device, individual mentoring, communication simulations in real-life situations, and an inclusive communication awareness campaign at Universitas Negeri Surabaya. The results showed an increase in participants’ understanding of how the talking bottle works, the development of basic skills in forming simple utterances, increased confidence to participate in simulations and presentations, and the creation of more supportive interaction spaces through the assistance of facilitators, sign language interpreters, and supporting visual media. The program also demonstrates that strengthening communication skills among deaf students needs to be understood as a process involving technical, psychosocial, and campus social environment aspects. Therefore, the talking bottle can function as a relevant interactive communication medium to support the development of an inclusive campus, especially when accompanied by continuous training, operational modules, and support from the academic community.
