Abstract

Character education is a key pillar in fostering sustainable academic motivation amidst the challenges of moral degradation and low student engagement in vocational schools. This study aims to analyze the influence of character education on the academic motivation of students at State Vocational High School (SMK) 15 Bandung, focusing on the dimensions of responsibility, integrity, and discipline in the context of vocational learning. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing an explanatory survey method with 397 student respondents from four expertise programs: Social Work, Hospitality, Culinary, and Visual Communication Design. Data were collected through a Likert-scale-based questionnaire and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) with SmartPLS 4 software. The results showed that character education had a positive and significant effect on students' academic motivation. Character values were proven to strengthen students' self-efficacy, learning persistence, and goal orientation through increased self-regulation and perceptions of educational responsibility. These findings confirm the principles of self-determination theory and social-cognitive theory, which suggest that character-based learning can increase intrinsic motivation through the interaction between personal, social, and cognitive factors. This research makes theoretical contributions to the development of an integrative character-motivation model and offers practical implications for teachers and policymakers in designing learning experiences that foster student responsibility, independence, and overall well-being.

Abstract

Abstract

The main triggering factor for landslides is high rainfall intensity, especially during the rainy season. Excessive rainfall can cause an increase in water content in the soil, which in turn will reduce the shear strength of the soil and increase the volume weight of the soil. The method used is a laboratory experiment by taking samples from the field. The sample of this study was sandy clay soil taken from a landslide-prone area located in Talamau District, West Pasaman Regency. Based on the results of soil geotechnical laboratory tests in the landslide-prone zone in Talamau District, West Pasaman Regency, it can be concluded that the soil sample has moderate plasticity characteristics with a Liquid Limit of 59.39%, Plastic Limit of 49.77%, and Plasticity Index of 9.62%. The soil reaches a maximum dry density of 1.37 gr/cm³ at an optimum water content of 500 ml, with a grain size distribution dominated by the sand fraction (83.978% retained on sieve No. 4-20) and a very low fine material content (1.234%). The results of the triaxial test showed soil behavior that varied from brittle to strain-hardening depending on the level of cell stress. Overall, the soil can be classified as well-graded sand with good drainage but low cohesion, thus requiring additional stabilization for construction applications in landslide-prone areas.

Abstract

The decline in students’ moral and spiritual values highlights the urgency of developing character education based on religious habituation. This study was motivated by the need to instill Islamic character values in elementary school students through meaningful and consistent routines. The purpose of this research is to describe the implementation and effectiveness of the Program Literasi Agama Islam (PLITA) or Islamic Religious Literacy Program at SDN 2 Giriwangi in shaping the religious character of fifth- and sixth-grade students. The PLITA program is conducted every Thursday through a series of activities, including the recitation of Asmaul Husna, reading short Qur’anic surahs, chanting Sholawat Nabi, short religious lectures, interactive discussions, and structured reflective assignments. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation of PLITA activities. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing—with triangulation for validation. The results show that PLITA significantly contributes to improving students’ religious attitudes, discipline, responsibility, and spiritual awareness. Students became more engaged, polite, and active in religious practices, while teachers played a crucial role as role models and value reinforcers. The findings align with the theories of Habituation (Skinner), Social Learning (Bandura), and Character Education (Lickona), emphasising repetition, modelling, and internalisation of values. In conclusion, PLITA is an effective and innovative religious education model based on habituation and reflective literacy, fostering religious character and discipline among elementary students.

Abstract

The pedagogical challenge in health vocational education lies in preventing the reduction of Civic Education to a mere formalistic exercise that fails to influence professional behavior. This study investigates the construction of Pancasila values through the implementation of Moral Inquiry as a deliberative instructional strategy designed to foster prosocial character among health vocational students. We explored the lived experiences of eight participants from Speech Therapy, Radiodiagnostic and Radiotherapy, and Hospital Administration programs who engaged in a systematic value internalisation process. By utilizing professional ethical dilemmas as the primary stimulus for cognitive disequilibrium, the research sought to move students beyond conventional rule-following toward a post-conventional civic disposition. Adopting a transcendental descriptive phenomenological approach, we focused on the structural and textural descriptions of the students' moral development. Our findings indicate that the construction of prosocial character is achieved through a rigorous process of ego reduction where the students’ self-oriented professional motives are surrendered to the civic imperatives of humanity and social justice. We identified a critical transition from theoretical value recognition to a habitual "moral automation" where prosociality becomes a core component of the students' vocational identity. This study demonstrates that the integration of civic values into specialized vocational training creates a "moral-technical synthesis" that empowers students to act as moral agents within the healthcare system. We conclude that this deliberative pedagogy is essential for developing a workforce that embodies the ethical spirit of the state philosophy while maintaining technical excellence in their respective health fields.

Abstract

The decline in children’s social care character has become increasingly evident in recent years, marked by reduced empathy, rising individualism, and the weakening of prosocial behaviors within the school environment. This condition necessitates the development of pedagogical strategies capable of meaningfully fostering the value of social concern. This article aims to describe the effectiveness of storytelling in developing social care character through a descriptive literature review. The method employed is a literature review of national and international articles relevant to character education, storytelling, teacher and child dialogic interaction, and children’s social development. The findings reveal that storytelling contributes to improving children’s ability to understand others’ perspectives, internalize moral values, and demonstrate social care behaviors such as sharing, cooperating, and helping peers. The dialogic approach in the storytelling process also strengthens children’s emotional engagement, thereby facilitating the internalization of character values. Overall, this literature review confirms that storytelling is an effective, easily adaptable instructional strategy that can be integrated across various fields of knowledge to strengthen character education from an early age.

Abstract

The settlement of bored pile foundations is one of the critical factors affecting the stability of structures, thereby requiring accurate prediction methods. Along with technological advancements, prediction methods have also evolved, creating new opportunities to simplify the estimation process and obtain more precise results. Support Vector Machine (SVM), as one of the machine learning methods, provides an efficient way to predict foundation settlement compared to direct field measurements. This research aims to develop a predictive model for bored pile foundation settlement using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and to validate its accuracy by comparing the predicted settlement results with analytical settlement calculations. The study utilized field test data, namely the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), building load data (Q), and foundation data obtained from various literature sources. The input parameters considered include pile length (L), pile diameter (D), end bearing capacity (Qp), and shaft resistance (Qs), while the output parameter is foundation settlement. The performance of the model was evaluated using the R² and RMSE metrics. The results indicate that, on training data, the model achieved an R value of 0.9943 and an RMSE of 0.1, demonstrating excellent ability in learning data patterns. However, a considerable performance drop was observed on testing data, with an R value of 0.447 and an RMSE of 0.394. This large discrepancy between training and testing performance suggests mild overfitting, where the model performs very accurately on previously seen data but lacks generalization capability when applied to unseen cases

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of anti-bullying and gender equality regulations and their contribution to the internalization of character education values. This study used a descriptive quantitative method supported by qualitative data, using survey instruments and literature reviews. Data are analyzed using the Mazmanian and Sabatier policy implementation framework, ambiguity-conflict theory, and a character education framework. The results of the study indicate that anti-bullying and gender equality regulations have a clear legal basis, but the effectiveness of their implementation varies across schools. The prevalence of bullying remains high, especially in verbal forms at 48.1 percent and relational at 32.7 percent, and gender bias persists. The implementation of anti-bullying policies is experimental, while gender equality tends to be a symbolic implementation. The contribution of regulations is more on the aspects of moral knowing and partly moral feeling, but has not yet touched on moral action. Strengthening teacher capacity is needed through gender bias training, integration of indicators of School-Related Gender-Based Violence and Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion in national monitoring, and enrichment of practice-based character education.
