Abstract

Using descriptive qualitative method, this paper aims to identify the forms of mitigation of criticizing speech acts in two novels entitled To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set A Watchman, to identify translation technique used and to describe the quality of translation of expressions mitigating speech act of criticizing in those novels. Data used were linguistic units (words, phrases, clauses, or sentences) represented mitigation types of criticizing speech act. The findings indicate that there were two mitigation types of speech act criticizing, namely external and internal. Expressions mitigating speech act of criticizing from those novels mainly had an equivalent message in Source Text (ST). Translation techniques applied to translate mitigation forms in criticizing speech act imply the translator’s competence in conveying the message of Source Text. Thus, it will impact on shifting meaning or even level of politeness.

Abstract

Abstract

Maxim infringement is one of non-observance maxim which occurs when the speaker has no intention to make an implicature because the speaker is incapable to speak clearly. Generally infringing stems from imperfect linguistic performance or from impaired linguistic performance. Objectives of this research is about maxim infringement brought by Captain Haddock in a comic series of The Adventure of Tintin. The researcher found that 80% of maxim infringement occured because Captain Haddock was under the influence of liquor and the rest occured when He was on critical situation betweeen life and death. The researcher found connection between maxim infringement and speech act theory, even supposing maxim infringement result in failure of the speaker in generating implicature.  As conclusion, maxim infringement brought by the character of Captain Haddok shows that it happens mostly because the speaker temporaly has cognitive impairment to make an implicature caused by under influence of liquor and some critical situations.

Abstract

Reduction in subtitling is inevitable due to technical rules of time and space as well as synchronization, i.e. displaying subtitle when the utterance/dialogue is spoken. Consequently, reduction leads to the loss of meaning incorporated into the subtitle. Reduction takes place within linguistic unit, such as word, group of words, even clause/sentence. Under the scrutiny of experiential dimension within ideational metafunction of Systemic Functional Linguistics, this qualitative study article discusses the results of a study on how far reduction of English Nominal Group (NG) elements as experiential structure has contributed to alteration of entity expression in the Indonesian subtitle of The Kingdom (2007), of which the objective data were collected by way of purposive sampling. The results show that reduction of English NG experiential structure set new expression of entity and even reduction of the NG main element, Thing, resulted in the loss of entity in the subtitle.

Abstract

This research reviews prophet Muhammad SAW utterances when talking to people who had different paradigms from him. The data used in this research are the conversations of prophet Muhammad to non-moslim in book hadith of Bukhari. This research is qualitative study and to analyze the data is used heuristics method. The result shows that from 34 Rasulullah Muhammad’s speeches against non muslim people are found 3 types of speech acts, those are 16 directive speech acts, 17 assertive and 1 rogative. Moreover the most dominant politeness that arises is negative politeness. It happened because negative politeness is used to protect negative face that was used for a social relationship between speaker and hearer. Furthermore, Off the Record strategy is to be the most dominant in asertive type because a speaker (Prophet Muhammad) used a communication strategy by not stating directive speech directly to the non muslim as the hearer.

Abstract

This study is about the analysis of English refusal strategies and their translation in Indonesian as found in the novel entitled Kekejian Yang Indah. The aims of the study are to find out the types of refusal strategies in the original novel and to identify the translation techniques applied by the translator to translate the refusal strategies into Indonesian. The linguistic data were analyzed by using the theory of refusal strategies proposed by Beebe et al (1990). Meanwhile, the translation techniques were identified based on Molina and Albir (2002). The result shows that there are 91 data of refusal strategies. There are 67 direct refusal strategies and 24 indirect refusal strategies. The direct refusal strategies are translated by using established equivalent (135 data), modulation (22 data), explicitation (19data), variation (19 data), implicitation (14 data), pure borrowing (6 data), reduction (5 data), addition (5 data), deletion (4 data), transposition (2 data), adaptation (1 data), paraphrase (1 data) and discursive creation (1 data). Meanwhile, the indirect refusal strategies are translated by applying established equivalent (49 data), variation (16 data), explicitation (10 data), modulation (8 data), addition (4 data), pure borrowing (3 data), reduction (2 data) and paraphrase (1 data). By using established equivalent frequently, it is assumed that translation of refusal strategies in `Kekejian yang Indah` reflects familiar and usual translation.
