Abstract

Integers are an important topic in mathematics that students must understand well. However, in practice, many students face difficulties in understanding integer operations. One way to address this issue is by using a number line manipulative that employs Dienes' steps. This research is qualitative, with a case study approach. The subjects consisted of three 6th-grade students selected through purposive sampling. The three subjects had varying mathematical abilities: high, medium, and low. The learning activities used six steps of Dienes. The instruments used were observation sheets, interview guidelines, and a test consisting of eight questions related to the addition and subtraction of integers. Data collection techniques followed the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that learning using Dienes' steps with integer manipulatives successfully addressed students' difficulties in performing integer operations, especially in problems involving operations with two adjacent signs.

Abstract

Differentiated learning based on student learning styles is implemented to accommodate the diverse ways students process and represent information. Differentiated teaching modules are essential to align learning with teacher planning. An educational report from a school in East Java indicated a need for improvements in innovative teaching practices, learning processes, and reflective teaching. This study aims to describe the implementation process of differentiated teaching modules for Grade 7 students. A qualitative descriptive method was used, employing observation sheets to monitor teacher and student activities. Observations were conducted by two Mathematics Education-trained observers, with data converted to scores using a four-point Likert scale and analyzed qualitatively through comments and suggestions. Challenges included students’ limited ability to operate laptops, experience with group learning, confidence in sharing opinions, and careful reading of instructions. Results indicated that the differentiated teaching modules were highly effective, showing excellent ratings in both teacher and student activities across four learning sessions.

Abstract

Translation is considered as a step in transforming the information contained from the source representation to the destination representation. In the process of students doing mathematical translation there are four stages of activity, Unpacking the Source, Preliminary Coordination, Constructing the Target, and Determining Equivalence. This study aims to analyze the activities carried out by students in translating representations from graphic to symbolic, table to symbolic, and verbal to symbolic based on HOTS. This research was conducted at SMA Lamongan Regency with three research students in class XI who had learned about the concept of quadratic functions. The instruments used were translation questions and interview guidelines. The applied data analysis focused on four stages of translation activity which were then grouped according to (high, medium, and low categories). The results showed that the translation of verbal representations into symbolic ones was the most difficult for students to complete. Keywords: mathematical translation, representation, HOTS.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i4.pp1887-1899

Abstract

The skills involved in the mathematical thinking process are crucial for university students pursuing Mathematics Education. However, most of them lack proficiency in seeing patterns while addressing an issue and articulating the problem in mathematical terms. The objectives of this research are (1) to analyze students' mathematical thinking process skills; (2) to ascertain students' expectations regarding the learning process and assessment in Ethnomathematical education; (3) to develop a performance assessment model design; (4) to evaluate the quality of the performance assessment model within Ethnomathematics-based Project-based Learning (PjBL) for measuring students' mathematical thinking process skills; and (5) to report the outcomes of measuring students' mathematical thinking process skills. This study employs a research and development (R&D) design. This study's population comprises all 6th-semester students enrolled in the Mathematics Education program at Muria Kudus University. The research sample was obtained by a saturation sampling procedure, comprising 107 students. The study instruments employed consist of assessment tools designed to evaluate students' mathematics cognitive processing skills. The acquired data were analyzed descriptively. The research findings indicate that: (1) students' mathematical thinking process skills are suboptimal, with a mean value of 54.14%; (2) students desire greater engagement in an active learning process that connects to real-life situations and cultural contexts, incorporating assessments that reflect individual performance; (3) a performance assessment model design for Ethnomathematics-based Project-Based Learning (PjBL) has been developed, encompassing objectives, components, instruments, syntax, and model guidelines. The created performance assessment approach for ethnomathematics-based project-based learning is both valid and reliable, and the evaluation of mathematical thinking process abilities demonstrates exceptional outcomes. This study suggests the necessity of implementing the ethnomathematics-based Project-Based Learning (PJBL) performance evaluation model to enhance students' mathematical thinking skills through an active, contextual, and culturally relevant method.         Keywords: ethnomathematics, performance assessment, pjbl, project-based learning.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i3.pp1281-1296
