Abstract

Indonesia continues to face persistent challenges in reading literacy, particularly among children of migrant workers who lack access to quality formal education. This study explores the effectiveness of Augmented Reality (AR)-based learning media in enhancing the reading skills of Indonesian migrant children in Malaysia. Utilizing a quantitative pretest-posttest design, this study involved 34 elementary school students enrolled at At-Tanzil Learning Center in Selangor. The intervention consisted of interactive AR-enhanced picture storybooks, designed to improve reading motivation, letter and word recognition, and reading comprehension. Data were analyzed through simple linear regression analysis using SPSS. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in students' reading abilities after the use of AR media (t = 2.629, p = .012), with an R² value of 0.136, indicating a 13.6% effect size. The results suggest that AR integration into literacy instruction can meaningfully support early reading development, particularly in the reading skill aspect. Furthermore, the use of immersive and interactive technologies has been shown to increase student engagement, comprehension, and motivation to read. These outcomes underline the potential of AR as a pedagogical tool for marginalized populations and offer practical implications for educators, policymakers, and instructional designers aiming to bridge literacy gaps through accessible and technology-supported interventions. Abstract

Cognitive Load is a theory that describes the amount of mental resources a person uses to complete a learning task. Mental resources are a person's cognitive abilities including mind, attention, memory and problem solving skills. Cognitive load in learning that occurs in the classroom describes the condition of students in dealing with learning tasks. The independent curriculum is the curriculum currently used at all levels of education including primary education. However, the curriculum faces problems both in terms of teachers and learners. The purpose of this study was to describe the condition of intrinsic, extrinsic and germane cognitive load of students during learning when using an independent curriculum. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The data collection technique used purposive sampling as many as 6 informants consisting of 2 teachers and 4 students. The results of this study are the intrinsic cognitive load of students found in IPAS, PPKN, Mathematics, English and Javanese subjects. In addition, the intrinsic cognitive load is triggered by giving assignments and motivation or interest in learning from the students themselves. Extrinsic cognitive load was triggered by the lecture learning method used by the instructor or teacher due to the use of high vocabulary. Extrinsic cognitive load is also triggered by the condition of the learning environment, namely the noisy or crowded atmosphere inside and outside the classroom. The germane cognitive load is triggered when the teacher or lecturer presents the subject matter.

Abstract

The government focuses on the challenges senior vocational high schools (SMK) face in producing competent and employable graduates. Issues include a lack of curriculum alignment with industry demands, low absorption of graduates in the job market, and mismatched competencies with industry needs, leading to a lack of mental readiness for work among graduates. This research aims to test the soft skills abilities of students being taught with PjBL and conventional models with high and low self-efficacy and the interaction between learning models and self-efficacy towards students' soft skills abilities. This research uses a quasi-experimental design. The research subjects were class XI students at SMKN 1 Blitar. This study selected 33 students in the experimental class and 33 in the control class. Learning in the experimental and control classes was carried out in 6 meetings with multicamera material—analysis of relationship and interaction data between variables using the two-way ANOVA test. The research results show a difference in soft skills abilities among students taught with the PjBL model and what is taught conventionally soft skills in high and low self-efficacy, as well as an interaction between the PjBL model and self-efficacy toward soft skills abilities. The research limitation only supports soft skills learning outcomes.

Abstract

Social education programs often face challenges in effectively developing metacognitive skills in pre-service teachers, which are crucial for enhancing problem-solving and decision-making abilities in the classroom. Metacognition allows teachers to monitor and regulate their thinking, yet many teacher education programs lack structured frameworks to support this development. This study aims to address this gap by developing an Experiential Learning (EL) model designed to enhance the metacognitive skills of pre-service social education teachers. Based on Meijer et al.'s (2013) framework, the model integrates three core components: metacognitive knowledge, metacognitive regulation, and metacognitive responsiveness. A qualitative research design was employed, using expert validation through the Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) method and a Likert-scale suitability assessment. Five education experts evaluated the model’s alignment with metacognitive competencies, yielding a high suitability score of 4.56 out of 5. The model follows a learning cycle that incorporates concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. The results indicate that integrating metacognitive strategies into learning activities, with clearly defined instructor roles, significantly enhances pre-service teachers' metacognitive abilities. This research emphasizes the importance of incorporating reflective, contextual learning designs to foster higher-order thinking skills within teacher education, particularly in the underdeveloped field of social education.
