Abstract

This research discusses students' perceptions of mathematics learning based on their brain dominance. Descriptive qualitative methods were used with questionnaires and interviews. The research subjects were 26 students who filled out a questionnaire in the form of a brain dominance questionnaire, with details of 6 students who were interviewed in depth. Data analysis was carried out through discourse analysis of the interview results by considering the respondent's environmental context. The results of the research show that there are differences in perception between students who are right and left brain dominant and students who use both equally. Some students have different ease and difficulties in learning mathematics, as well as different views about the benefits of this material in everyday life. Apart from brain dominance, there are several other factors that influence students' perceptions, including the way teachers teach and the learning environment. Knowing students' brain dominance is important, because it can help teachers determine how to teach material appropriately so that it gets a good perception for all students, whether they are right-brain dominant, left-brain dominant, or those who tend to be balanced. In conclusion, students' perceptions of mathematics learning can be different, depending on their brain dominance.

Abstract

The low spatial reasoning ability and high mathematics anxiety of junior high school students is an interesting discussion to be studied in more depth to understand students' spatial reasoning abilities and mathematical anxiety. Therefore, this study aims to explore the spatial reasoning abilities of junior high school students in solving geometric problems in terms of students' math anxiety. The research method used is qualitative research with a case study type. Data were collected through written tests to explore spatial reasoning data, followed by task-based unstructured interviews and a Likert scale questionnaire to explore math anxiety data. Furthermore, the research data were analyzed by following the Miles and Huberman model, which consisted of data reduction (data reduction), data presentation (data display), and concluding (verification). The results showed that the average student's math anxiety was 2.294. Students' spatial reasoning abilities were dominated at a moderate level, namely 69.23%. The results also show that the students' spatial reasoning ability does not depend on the math anxiety category. The ability of spatial orientation is the ability most students master. Once the mathematical anxiety and spatial reasoning abilities of students are understood, it is intended that the teacher would take this into account while structuring geometry instruction in the classroom, which will foster the growth of students' spatial reasoning while simultaneously lowering the number of students' mathematical anxiety.Rendahnya kemampuan penalaran spasial dan tingginya kecemasan matematika siswa SMP menjadi bahasan menarik untuk dikaji lebih mendalam supaya diperoleh pemahaman menyeluruh tentang kemampuan penalaran spasial dan kecemasan matematika siswa. Abstract

The initial algebraic concept typically introduced to students is the linear equation in one variable. One of the earliest difficulties students encounter with this concept is comprehending the significance of a variable. This study aims to investigate the epistemological obstacles faced by students in acquiring proficiency in linear equations in one variable. A qualitative phenomenological methodology was employed in this research. The participants consisted of 35 eighth-grade students enrolled in a junior high school who had previously studied linear equations in one variable. In the initial phase of the study, the researcher formulated two word problems. The utilization of word problems was intended to elucidate students’ thought processes in articulating their ideas or reasoning in written form. Subsequently, interviews were conducted with four selected students to corroborate the researcher’s interpretation of their written responses. The findings and discussion reveal that the conceptual deficiencies acquired during instruction contributed to the emergence of epistemological learning obstacles among students. This learning obstacle was identified through the solutions proposed by students, which were predominantly arithmetic rather than algebraic. Although the students acknowledged that the problem they were dealing with was related to the concept of linear equations in one variable, the majority still encountered difficulties in providing solutions in the form of a linear equation in one variable., particularly in the forms  and .

Abstract

This research is titled “Analyzing students’ errors on the topic of statistics using Watson’s criteria” which aims to identify in depth the mistakes made by students in solving statistics problems. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, so the results obtained emphasize more on descriptive explanations regarding the forms and types of errors that occur. The research subjects were 12th-grade students at Madrasah Aliyah AL AMIN, Kuningan Regency, who were chosen because they were considered to have received statistical material but still encountered various obstacles in the learning process. Research data were obtained through written tests and interviews designed to further explore the reasons why students made errors. Based on the analysis, it was found that student errors can be categorized into eight Watson criteria, including incorrect procedures, missing data, manipulation errors, and errors in interpreting problems. Although some students are able to arrive at the correct answers, the process of solving problems is often not systematic and skips important steps, indicating weaknesses in understanding basic statistics concepts. These findings suggest that improvements are still needed in teaching approaches so that students not only focus on the final results but also understand the problem-solving process thoroughly. By understanding the dominant types of errors, educators can develop more targeted learning strategies, provide constructive feedback, and create more comprehensive evaluation methods. This research is expected to contribute to curriculum development and enhance the quality of statistics education, enabling students to achieve better learning outcomes.

Abstract

Mathematics learning should facilitate students in developing and exploring their Mathematical Problem-Solving Ability (MPSA). Mathematical resilience is very important in supporting students’ MPSA in mathematics learning. This study aims to explore students’ MPSA in terms of their mathematical resilience. A qualitative descriptive method was used in this research to analyze the contribution of mathematical resilience to students’ MPSA.  A senior high school in Lebak Regency, Banten, was chosen as the location for the research. The research sample consisted of 23 eleventh-grade students, from which 3 students were selected for further analysis based on high, medium, and low categories of mathematical resilience. The findings indicate that students with high mathematical resilience have very good MPSA, as evidenced by achieving all four indicators of MPSA based on Polya’s problem-solving stages. Students with medium mathematical resilience still require guidance at the fourth stage of Polya's process, namely evaluating the results and the problem-solving process. Meanwhile, students with low mathematical resilience are only able to understand the problem but are not yet able to develop strategies, implement problem-solving, or evaluate the results and the process. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that students’ mathematical resilience influences their MPSA, thus requiring attention to mathematical resilience in the mathematics learning process.

Abstract

Learning the Pythagorean theorem is a significant challenge at the junior high school level because students often struggle to understand concepts, connect geometric and algebraic representations, and solve contextual problems. Based on previous studies, students' difficulties indicate the presence of learning obstacles. Existing research has addressed students' difficulties, errors, and epistemological obstacles in solving Pythagorean theorem problems and has presented applications of the Pythagorean theorem. Therefore, this study aims to analyze students' didactic learning obstacles to the Pythagorean theorem topic. To achieve this goal, a qualitative case study was conducted. Data was collected through data triangulation: written tests, interviews, and document studies. At the data-collection stage, 30 students and two teachers participated. Based on the written test results, the answers exhibit various characteristics. At the analysis stage, it is performed using ATLAS.ti software. The results show that there is a form of didactic learning obstacles consisting of visual orientation obstacles and formula procedural obstacles. The Visual orientation obstacles include students' lack of understanding of triangle concepts. The procedural obstacles include students' incomprehension of algebraic representations, understanding of problem-solving, understanding of procedures beyond integers, and application of Puythagos' theorem formulas. Visual orientation obstacles cause formula procedural obstacles. The didactic factor that creates obstacles is the way the topic is presented and the teacher's approach to designing learning. Didactic obstacles analysis is an important step in formulating a hypothesis about how a concept should be taught. By knowing the didactic obstacles, teachers or researchers can develop a more accurate Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT). This will lead to the design of learning activities that anticipate common mistakes and misconceptions.    Keywords: didactical obstacle, learning obstacle, topic presentation analysis, textbooks, pythagorean theorem.
