Abstract

Background: Educational disparities in Indonesia necessitate a comprehensive evaluation of students' critical thinking skills across various geographical regions, including highlands, border areas, and lowlands, to address potential educational shortcomings.Aim: The study aims to quantitatively assess and compare the mathematical critical thinking abilities of junior high school students across different geographical settings to inform educational strategies and interventions.Method: Employing a quantitative approach with an ex post facto causal comparative research design, the study utilized cluster sampling to select a representative sample of 82 students from highland, border, and lowland schools. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including Kruskal-Wallis tests and post hoc examinations, were conducted to analyze the data.Result: Preliminary descriptive analysis indicated a general lack of critical thinking skills in mathematics among students in all areas. However, inferential statistical analysis revealed significant differences in the critical thinking abilities of students from the three geographical regions, with students in urban (lowland) areas displaying superior critical thinking rankings compared to their counterparts in border and rural (highland) areas. Conclusion: The findings underscore significant geographical disparities in mathematical critical thinking skills among Indonesian junior high school students. These disparities are likely influenced by factors such as unequal access to educational resources, teaching methodologies, student interest, and the socioeconomic and educational backgrounds of parents. Addressing these inequalities is crucial for enhancing the educational outcomes and critical thinking abilities of students across Indonesia.

Abstract

Purpose: This study explores the contribution of logical-mathematical intelligence to students' mathematics learning and investigates whether certain contextual factors act as moderators of this relationship. Method: A meta-analysis was conducted by synthesizing findings from empirical studies published between 2014 and 2024. The research followed a systematic review protocol using the PRISMA method, selecting only quantitative studies that focused on the relationship between logical-mathematical intelligence and variables in mathematics education. Data from eligible studies were analyzed using meta-analytic software to estimate effect sizes and assess the influence of various moderator variables, including educational level, sample size, year of publication, and geographical context. Findings: The results demonstrate a strong and consistent relationship between logical-mathematical intelligence and mathematics learning. Students with higher levels of this intelligence tend to perform better in understanding concepts, solving problems, and achieving learning goals in mathematics. While the influence of this intelligence appears stable across different educational levels and locations, notable variations were found based on the sample sizes of the included studies. Significance: The findings emphasize the essential role of logical-mathematical intelligence in mathematics education. Educators are encouraged to integrate teaching strategies that nurture this intelligence through problem-based learning, logical reasoning activities, and concept visualization tools. This study also calls for future research to explore additional moderating factors, such as gender or teaching style, to gain a more nuanced understanding of how this form of intelligence interacts with diverse learning environments.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the types of errors made by Madrasah Aliyah (MA) students in solving problems related to concept understanding in statistics, based on Kastolan’s stages.Method: A qualitative approach using a phenomenological method was employed to deeply explore students' error patterns. Data were collected through concept understanding tests, documentation, and interviews, involving 12 grade 12 students selected by purposive sampling. The analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model.Findings: The results revealed that students with high, moderate, and low concept understanding abilities all made errors categorized into conceptual, procedural, and technical errors. Conceptual and procedural errors stemmed from limited understanding of statistical concepts such as mode, median, and mean. Technical errors were caused by lack of accuracy, insufficient exposure to varied problem types, and low student independence in learning.Significance: This study highlights the importance of reinforcing basic statistical concepts in teaching and suggests that varied and non-routine problem exercises are essential to reduce students’ errors and enhance conceptual understanding.

Abstract

Computational Thinking (CT) has been recognized as one of the essential skills of the 21st century and is increasingly being integrated into educational curricula in various countries. This study aims to analyze trends, challenges, and the impact of CT in mathematics education through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach of 41 selected articles from the Scopus database covering the period from 2019 to 2024. The analysis results show a significant increase in the number of publications related to CT in mathematics education, with the highest peak occurring in 2023. Scratch technology was identified as one of the most commonly used tools to support CT learning, although there was considerable variation in the types of technology used in the reviewed literature. The most frequently studied mathematics topics were geometry and number patterns, while topics such as trigonometry and measurement were still rarely explored. The findings also indicate that CT has a positive impact on the mathematics learning process, which can be grouped into three main areas: (1) CT's contribution to students' understanding and learning outcomes, (2) the role of digital technology in supporting the implementation of CT, and (3) the relationship between CT and the development of higher-order mathematical thinking skills. However, six categories of challenges in implementing CT in the classroom were also identified, including: (1) barriers to using technology for CT learning, (2) lack of training and guidance for teachers, and (3) limitations in infrastructure and supporting facilities. To address these challenges and optimize the potential of CT in transforming mathematics learning, close collaboration between researchers, educators, and policymakers is required.      Keywords: computational thinking, systematic literature review, mathematics learning.

Abstract

The transformation from the 2013 Curriculum (K–13) to the Revised 2013 Curriculum (K–13R) in Indonesia represents a significant shift in mathematics education. This study aims to analyze the differences between K–13 and K–13R through six key aspects: (1) curriculum structure and competency formulation, (2) pedagogical paradigm including the implementation of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS), (3) emphasis on literacy and numeracy, (4) teacher readiness and classroom implementation, (5) availability and contextual quality of textbooks and learning media, and (6) student learning outcomes based on PISA and national assessment data. Adopting a qualitative descriptive-comparative approach, this study uses document analysis to explore official curriculum guidelines, textbooks, and supporting literature. The findings reveal that K–13R introduces more structured and concrete competencies, increases focus on contextual and HOTS-based learning, and places greater emphasis on numeracy skills. Nevertheless, classroom implementation remains problematic due to gaps in teacher preparedness, lack of relevant instructional materials, and insufficient understanding of authentic assessments. These results highlight the need for integrated curriculum planning, sustainable teacher training, and contextual resource development to realize the intended transformation.
