Abstract

Mathematics textbooks are essential tools for facilitating the achievement of learning objectives, yet their use varies across classrooms, even when the same mathematical concepts are being taught. This study aims to investigate students' understanding of geometrical similarity through praxeological analysis within the framework of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD). The analysis identifies differences in the structuring of geometrical similarity tasks between Indonesian and Singaporean textbooks. According to ATD praxeology, mathematical content is analyzed through the "praxis" and "logos" blocks, where praxis encompasses task types (T) and techniques (τ), while logos involves technology (θ) and theory (Θ). The findings highlight distinct priorities in how geometrical similarity is presented in textbooks from both countries, with implications for students’ conceptual and procedural understanding. Specifically, the absence of pantograph tasks in Singaporean textbooks and the lack of scale factor exercises in Indonesian textbooks reflect differences in knowledge construction and task emphasis. These variations impact students' ability to relate textbook knowledge to real-world applications. The study underscores the significance of incorporating a diverse range of task designs and practical experiences to enhance students' geometric reasoning abilities. A well-structured textbook not only supports students in achieving learning objectives but also fosters a continuous process of building, connecting, and deepening their mathematical understanding.

Abstract

Number patterns are a fundamental aspect of mathematics, often serving as a bridge between arithmetic and algebra. Number patterns often require students to think abstractly, identifying relationships and rules that govern the sequence of numbers. For some people, this transition from concrete to abstract thinking can be difficult. Encouraging students to visualize patterns using concrete objects or images can help bridge this gap, making abstract concepts more real. The aim of this study was to investigate the students' difficulties and how grade 9 students' mathematics approaches to number pattern problems. 32 students from a junior high schools in Tangerang participated in this case study. Purposive sampling technique is used in this study. The stages of the preliminary study involve interviewing the mathematics teacher regarding learning, administering preliminary exams, and evaluating the outcomes of the preliminary exams. Research data was collected through tests and interviews. These interviews took place post the analysis of initial test (a diagnostic tests). The result showed that the difficulty in discerning the regularity of the numerical arrangement: 1) In calculating the formula for the nth term in a number pattern, modeling is used; 2) Students frequently employ the direct proportion method to generalize patterns without taking into account the overall arrangement of numbers; 3) Observing the arrangement of numbers causes uncertainty in seeing order; 4) In generalizing number patterns, damage occurs; 5) illustrating that number patterns always have regularities, and these regularities are not always in the form of numerical differences.

Abstract

Functional thinking (FT) is individual’s cognitive process to identify the relation between variables and is essential for students to learn algebra. However, not much studies addressing the examination of the contents of FT problems within school mathematics textbooks, particularly in Indonesian curriculum. This study aims to describe the mathematics problems presented in junior high school mathematics textbooks of the new Indonesian curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka) based on the FT framework. To reach this aim, the student mathematics textbook published by The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbud) in 2022 was used to conduct the analysis. The textbooks used were seventh and eighth-grade mathematics textbooks. The data was collected by observing the textbook's contents in the algebra domain. The analysis was based on the framework of FT consisting of recursive patterns, covariance, and correspondence. The results show that the FT tasks appear in the learning of algebraic terms, modelling with algebra, and linear functions. Moreover, this study also found that tasks in each topic develop students’ FT at different stages. Tasks in algebraic terms fulfill all FT’s stages in hierarchical order, tasks in modelling with algebra focus on the correspondence stage, and tasks in linear functions include all FT stages but not in chronological order; that is, recursive patterns, correspondence, and then covariation. In conclusion, this study finds that algebraic problems provided by Indonesian textbooks already support students’ FT. Thus, designing more FT tasks and connecting each task to different algebra topics might help students develop their FT.

Abstract

The Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) is followed by students and is designed to measure reading and numeracy literacy as a cognitive learning outcome. In its development, AKM adopts the assessment system carried out by the OECD through PISA, so that it was first implemented and even now, in general, teachers still do not understand AKM which is based on numeracy literacy, and have not been able to develop measurement instruments according to standards. For the fulfillment of quality educational services for the community through improving the competence of teachers in AKM, community service is developed in the form of training. In order for the training to strengthen the understanding of numeracy literacy and the development of assessment instruments, this service is arranged in several stages. Seminar on strengthening numeracy literacy and its measurement, and the practice of developing AKM model instruments. Although the increase in participants' knowledge was not too high, the results of the evaluation of this service activity were responded to very well in service, responsiveness, and tangible evidence. The teacher's response to the implementation of service activities that have been carried out is generally considered very good. The seminars and workshops in the development of AKM model instruments have provided a lot of knowledge and experience in compiling standard instruments, so that not only for the needs of literacy measurement, but also for the needs of teachers in the development of learning outcome instruments. Therefore, it is important for the government (Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religion) or universities in the field of education to provide services for teachers in improving their numeracy understanding skills, and their skills in compiling AKM model instruments, so that they can be integrated into mathematics learning practices.

Abstract

Spatial ability plays a crucial role in shaping students' interest and career paths in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This quantitative study involved 60 science students aged 15–17 in Bandung, Indonesia, utilizing a spatial ability test to measure mental rotation, spatial visualization, and spatial orientation, along with a career interest questionnaire to assess STEM and non-STEM preferences. Logistic regression analysis confirmed that spatial ability significantly influenced students' STEM interest (p = 0.004) with a moderate contribution. Further analysis using the Independent Samples T-Test revealed that students interested in STEM had significantly higher mental rotation (p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = -1.000) and spatial visualization (p = 0.002, Cohen’s d = -0.797) abilities than non-STEM students, while spatial orientation showed no significant difference (p = 0.112, Cohen’s d = -0.317). These findings highlight the role of spatial ability as a predictor of STEM interest, emphasizing the need for educational interventions such as visualization-based learning, three-dimensional object manipulation, and technology-assisted spatial training, including computer-aided design (CAD) software and mental rotation exercises. Integrating these strategies into mathematics and science curricula can enhance spatial skills and support students' engagement in STEM education and careers.

Abstract

Geometry is a field of mathematical study closely related to spatial reasoning and its many uses in everyday life. The purpose of this study was to photograph the spatial reasoning ability of junior high school students in doing spatial tasks from a gender perspective and their perceptions of the geometry material and mathematics. A qualitative approach was chosen to describe the research findings. One hundred two junior high school students in Sleman Yogyakarta participated in spatial reasoning tests, interviews, and questionnaires. Data analysis uses data reduction, data presentation, and verification stages. The results showed that the average student's spatial reasoning ability was still low, 42.09. Most students mastered spatial tasks in spatial orientation, while the students' mastery of spatial reasoning was the weakest in the element of spatial visualization. From a gender perspective, male students showed superior spatial reasoning abilities than female students. Students perceive mathematics and geometry as complex materials, but they are essential to learning because of their many benefits in everyday life.
