Abstract

Computational Thinking (CT) skills are essential in mathematics education, particularly in data processing topics. This study aims to analyze the CT skills of 7th-grade junior high school students based on four main components: decomposing, abstraction, pattern recognition, and algorithmic thinking. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, involving 14 students selected purposively based on their diverse academic performance levels. Data was collected through classroom observation, CT skill tests focusing on data processing tasks, and in-depth semi-structured interviews to explore students’ problem-solving strategies and cognitive processes. The findings reveal varied CT competencies among students. For decomposing, 29% of students demonstrated high ability, effectively breaking down complex problems into manageable steps, while 36% exhibited moderate skills. In abstraction, the majority (57%) struggled to filter relevant data from irrelevant ones, highlighting this as a key area for improvement. Pattern recognition showed 36% of students in the high category, recognizing and logically explaining data trends, whereas 29% remained in the low category. Algorithmic thinking presented the strongest performance, with 43% of students categorized as high, showcasing structured and logical approaches to solving data-related problems. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions to strengthen abstraction and pattern recognition skills, crucial for comprehensive data analysis. By identifying strengths and weaknesses in CT skills, this research provides insights into designing more effective teaching strategies and developing CT-oriented curricula. The findings contribute to mathematics education by addressing 21st-century skills, equipping students with critical thinking and analytical capabilities needed in a data-driven world.         Keywords: computational thinking, mathematics, data processing, junior high school. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i4.pp1809-1823

Abstract

Identifying Learning Obstacles in Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers' Understanding of Circle Concepts: A Preliminary Study within A Didactical Design Research Framework. Objective: This research aims to identify the types of learning obstacles that pre-service mathematics teachers encounter when solving problems related to circles. Methods: A qualitative research approach with a case study design was employed to obtain in-depth information regarding the learning obstacles faced by pre-service mathematics teachers. This involved administering a written test on circle material and conducting in-depth interviews using an interview guide to explore the participants' responses. Findings: The research was conducted from May 21 to June 14, 2024, at a national university in Java, Indonesia. The participants included 33 pre-service mathematics teachers enrolled in the Flat Analytical Geometry course (2nd semester) who had been exposed to circle material. While almost all 33 participants were able to provide answers, they were not always completely correct. The analysis focused on 8 participants selected for data confirmability through in-depth interviews. The diversity of learning obstacles (LOs) found among these 8 participants was representative of the LOs identified in the test results of all participants. The results indicate that all pre-service mathematics teachers experienced learning obstacles in solving circle-related problems. The study identified all three types of learning obstacles ontogenic, epistemological, and didactical among the participants. In summary, pre-service mathematics teachers face ontogenic, epistemological, and didactical learning obstacles when solving circle problems. Conclusion: The analysis of learning obstacles, which is part of Didactical Design Research (DDR), was conducted in this study. The results of this research can serve as a reference in creating learning designs that minimize learning obstacles related to the circle material experienced by pre-service mathematics teachers.         Keywords: learning obstacles, pre-service, mathematics teachers, circle, DDR. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i1.pp419-439

Abstract

Mathematical literacy is an essential 21st-century competency that students must possess to address global challenges. However, results from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) show that Indonesian students' mathematical literacy remains low. This study aims to explore the epistemological obstacles experienced by students in understanding and solving PISA-standard mathematical literacy problems related to functions. Employing a qualitative approach through Didactical Design Research (DDR), this study focused on identifying epistemological obstacles among four 8th-grade students at a public secondary school in Bandung. Data were collected using tests, interviews, and documentation. The research findings revealed epistemological obstacles related to both conceptual knowledge and practical application, which were detailed in five main issues: understanding the concept of functions, representing functions in the form of equations, graphs, and tables, and solving context-based problems. These obstacles arose due to limited foundational knowledge, such as the concepts of domain, range, and variables, as well as a lack of practice in solving contextual problems.      Keywords: epistemological obstacles, mathematical literacy, PISA, function, mathematic education.  DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i4.pp1771-1786

Abstract

Students' critical thinking abilities are one of the goals of 21st-century learning. Critical thinking abilities enable students to think in a realistic and logical way, assist in understanding and solving problems, and build effective communication skills in facing future challenges. Therefore, the aim of this Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is to identify effective methods for enhancing students' critical thinking abilities, especially in the study of mathematics education. Microsoft Excel and Publish or Perish were used to examine a total of 14 papers from 2014 to 2024 found using Google Scholar and Scopus. The results of the analysis show that teaching approaches, subject matter, and teacher attitudes are some of the methods used to improve critical thinking skills. The most popular and successful teaching method in mathematics education is problem-based learning (PBL). Additionally, research conducted between 2020 and 2022 shows a greater focus on critical thinking skills, with quantitative and qualitative research methodologies taking center stage. Teachers can use these insights to provide more imaginative and significant mathematics instruction. It is recommended that teachers develop modules and frameworks that are integrated with ICT to improve critical thinking skills, especially for teaching in the early grades. This can contribute to a more imaginative and meaningful mathematics learning process.        Keywords: critical thinking, SLR, learning methods. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i4.pp1925-1938

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is the ability to identify known information, ask questions, adequacy of the information needed, skill in creating or compiling mathematical models, being able to find the right solution strategy, and being able to explain and check the correctness of the solution obtained. This research aims to analyze students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in the topic on mixed integer arithmetic operations based on Polya's problem-solving steps. This research uses a qualitative approach with a narrative research type. The research subjects consisted of 32 junior high school students. Data collection was carried out using mathematical problem-solving ability test instruments and interviews with several selected participants. Data was analyzed based on Polya's problem solving steps. Based on the results of data analysis, students' problem-solving abilities obtained based on these four steps are in the form of students who can determine important information in the problem and can plan solutions resulting in them being able to solve problems more regularly, namely by executing the plans they have planned. After that, students who understand the problem well can also check the correctness of the answers they have obtained. Therefore, it is hoped that this research can help teachers to implement a learning process that can develop problem solving abilities.

Abstract

Didactic Transposition of Absolute Value in Calculus Courses: Analyzing Curicula, Textbooks, and Classroom Instruction. Objective; This study aimed to analyze the knowledge to be taught in absolute value learning as part of the didactic transposition process. Method; A qualitative approach with a descriptive design was employed to examine curriculum documents and calculus textbooks as primary data sources. The research adopted a didactic transposition and praxeological framework to analyze the structure of absolute value instruction. The methodology included document selection based on inclusion criteria, content analysis of absolute value concepts in textbooks, comparison with theoretical praxeology models, and expert validation to ensure alignment with established mathematical and pedagogical principles. Triangulation was applied by analyzing multiple textbooks and curricula to enhance validity and reliability. Findings; The study results indicate that learning absolute value requires comprehensive material to bridge the transition of knowledge from school to university. Differential calculus textbooks introduce the absolute value concept with an initial definition as a non-negative value that geometrically represents distance, followed by a piecewise definition commonly found in high school textbooks. Content analysis reveals that task techniques related to absolute value material predominantly focus on perceptual, algebraic, and operational aspects, while graphical visualization is lacking, which hinders a thorough conceptual understanding. This highlights the contrast between the procedural approach in schools and the conceptual approach in universities, emphasizing the necessity of comprehensive materials to prevent learning obstacles. Conclusion; The findings emphasize the need for a more comprehensive presentation of absolute value in university calculus textbooks to support a smooth transition from school to higher education. The analysis revealed that while absolute value is introduced conceptually, the lack of graphical representation limits students' understanding. Additionally, inconsistencies between curriculum documents and learning materials indicate the necessity of aligning instructional resources. To prevent learning obstacles, it is recommended that absolute value content in differential calculus textbooks be presented in a complete and structured manner, integrating both procedural and conceptual approaches. Keywords: knowledge to be taught, absolute value, didactic transposition.

Abstract

Test content-based proof of validity is a type of evidence that supports the validity of a measuring instrument. This research aims to develop a mathematical problem-solving assessment instrument utilizing five experts. This study is classified as developmental research and follows a research design that includes two separate stages: the preliminary design stage and the prototype stage. However, its application is restricted to Prototype 1 and Prototype 2, specifically for expert evaluation. This instrument was designed explicitly for grade VIII students studying mathematics, covering all the topics from the odd semesters. The analysis progressed through three distinct stages "” curriculum analysis, content analysis, and context analysis "” each contributing to a comprehensive understanding of instructional resources. The study sought to narrow the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in mathematics education by incorporating real-world context. Surveys have revealed difficulties in answering mathematical problems, highlighting the need to address gaps in learning to improve competency. The careful and thorough construction of test instruments, considering factors such as validity, established the foundation for creating accurate assessment tools. The content validity assessment by the expert panel, with scores ranging from 0.817 to 0.884 based on the V-Aiken category, confirms that the instrument is vital in assessing students' mathematical problem -solving skills, and the implementation of this study yielded many valuable insights for educators and academics.
