Abstract

The development of science and technology in the era of globalisation requires students to have adequate adaptability and psychological resilience in facing academic and social pressures. Resilience is an important ability for students to survive, bounce back, and thrive from various difficulties they experience. This study aims to describe the resilience of Madrasah Aliyah (MA) students in Surakarta City based on their subjective experiences. This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, involving seven MA students as key informants. Data collection was conducted through participatory observation and in-depth interviews. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and verification-based conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that student resilience is in the good category, as demonstrated by their ability to regulate emotions, self-control, optimism, problem-solving skills, empathy, self-efficacy, and the ability to derive meaning and lessons from difficult experiences. Resilience in this study was measured using resilience indicators based on Reivich and Shatte's aspects, which were consistently demonstrated in the informants' narratives. Student resilience was also strengthened by the support of parents, teachers, and peers in dealing with academic and social pressures.

Abstract

Empathy is a crucial aspect that should be nurtured from an early age as a foundation for character development and children’s socialization skills. This study aims to identify the implementation of empathy regulation in children aged 2–4 years at Islamic educational institutions, specifically at KBIT RA Alif Smart Surakarta. The research focuses on four forms of empathy: emotional, cognitive, reflective, and pro-social, as demonstrated by the children toward their peers and teaching staff (ustadzah). This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, involving 7 participants teachers (ustadzah) from KBIT RA Alif Smart with an age range of 20 – 49 years. The findings indicate that most children have developed strong empathetic abilities across all four aspects. Children’s empathetic behaviors are reflected in their ability to imitate the empathetic actions of peers, learn through the exemplary conduct of their teachers, and take personal initiative in showing care for others. The study concludes that empathy regulation at KBIT RA Alif Smart has been effectively implemented through approaches that align with the developmental stages of early childhood.

Abstract

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is tasked with disaster management activities in the form of preparedness, namely steps that enable governments, organizations, communities, and individuals to respond to disaster conditions quickly and appropriately. Preparedness efforts also aim to determine the use of resources needed to respond effectively in disaster situations when a disaster occurs and know how to use them. This study aims to analyze the psychological well-being of male field officers at the Surakarta City BPBD. This is revealed through descriptive qualitative methods. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Then the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study indicate that the majority of field officers have good psychological well-being, characterized by six aspects, namely self-acceptance, positive relationships with others, independence, environmental mastery, life goals, and personal growth. Field officers can manage themselves and negative emotions, have empathy, and dare to make decisions and take responsibility. Field officers also have good environmental mastery, are able to organize tasks and resources. They have meaning in life, especially through humanitarian contributions and use failure as a driver or motivation to continue learning and developing. This psychological well-being forms the basis of their mental resilience in carrying out humanitarian duties.

Abstract

Adolescence is a challenging period, particularly in terms of social adjustment and identity search. A lack of social support from family and friends can lead to emotional distress and poor psychological conditions in adolescents, as observed in the students of SMK Negeri X Surakarta. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling, involving seven students and two school counselors as informants. Data were collected through surveys, in-depth interviews, and observations, then analyzed based on five aspects of social support. The findings reveal that emotional support, peer support, and instrumental support related to economic conditions are very limited, which leads to emotional stress and tendencies to withdraw. However, the presence of alternative figures, such as the school counselors and other family members, helps alleviate the psychological burden on adolescents. The study concludes that insufficient social support contributes to emotional stress and a decline in academic performance. Therefore, it is crucial for families, schools, and social environments to play an active role in building a responsive and sustainable support system to address these issues.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate and describe changes in couples’ communication after undergoing premarital counseling. The primary focus is on prospective brides and grooms who are Civil Servants (ASN) in Surakarta. Premarital counseling serves as a means to prepare couples for harmonious relationships, with communication being a crucial element. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach, where data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis of eight ASN couples who had undergone premarital counseling. The research findings indicate an improvement in couples’ communication, particularly in the areas of openness, empathy, and conflict resolution. Premarital counseling plays a crucial role in helping couples realize the value of good communication in creating harmony in the household. Abstract

Adolescent mental health is a fundamental aspect in supporting the academic, social, and emotional development of junior high school students. This study aims to describe in depth the mental health conditions of students at SMP Negeri X in Central Halmahera Regency, located in the 3T (underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost) region. The focus of the study includes students' understanding of mental health, emotional regulation skills, awareness of seeking help, empathy and social interaction, as well as teachers' views and roles in supporting students' mental health. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. The research subjects consisted of six students and three teachers selected purposively. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, observation, and supporting documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that students have a basic understanding of mental health, but it is still limited and tends to simplify the concept of mental health as the absence of stress or severe disorders. Students' emotional regulation abilities are in the developing stage, with a combination of adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies. Awareness of seeking help is still low, indicated by students' tendency to prefer peers over adults. Social interaction and empathy are relatively positive, although stigma against emotional expression is still found. Teachers recognize the importance of student mental health, but face limitations in competency, facilities, and policy support. This study concludes that strengthening mental health literacy, increasing teacher capacity, and developing sustainable and contextual school support systems in the 3T (United Nations, 3T) regions is necessary.

Abstract

Long-distance marriages are increasingly common due to economic and work demands. This presents challenges in maintaining the commitment of married couples. This study aims to describe the nature of marriage commitment in long-distance relationships, examining it from personal, moral, and structural perspectives. Data collection techniques used in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The research informants were married couples in long-distance marriages. The results show that couples in long-distance marriages still have a strong commitment. The personal commitment aspect is reflected in the intensity of communication, maintained love and attraction, and is identified as a couple that is internalized in each other. The moral aspect shows from ethical awareness and cultural and religious values that strengthen responsibility towards partners. Meanwhile, structural commitment is identified through the presence of children, financial responsibility, and external obstacles that support maintaining the relationship. The psychological dynamics of couples are characterized by the ability to regulate emotions, cognitive adjustment to distance, and strong intrinsic motivation. These findings suggest that marital commitment can be maintained in long-distance marriages if supported by shared awareness, quality communication, and strong shared values.
