Abstract

Mastering grammar is often perceived as a difficult task for students, especially when they are passive during lectures that do little to ignite their interest. This research aimed to improve students’ grammar mastery of automotive engineering at SMKN 2 Depok Yogyakarta by combining Problem-Based Learning (PBL) with the ESLVideo.com. Concerning innovative approaches incorporating technology in teaching vocational school, the research was designed as Classroom Action Research (CAR) and was conducted in two cycles. 36 students from the 11th grade were purposively selected because they experience problems with grammar, a lack of motivation, and exposure to technology. These data were collected using pre-tests, post-tests, observation check-list, field notes, and interviews that employed qualitative and quantitative techniques. Paired-sample t-tests analyzed the quantitative data while qualitative data observations and interview provided the context in which the participants were engaged and challenges faced. The use of expert validation, triangulation, and statistical analysis served to enhance the validity and reliability of the research. The results revealed that there was an increase in grammar mastery among students, and average test scores changed from 71.3 in the pre-test to 83.2 in the post-test. Frame grammar within the context of real-life situations pertaining to their discipline in the vocational context increased levels of their understanding and reasoning. Initially, there were some challenges such as inconveniences emerging from lack of exposure to the PBL model and not being able to understand the videos due to limited vocabulary, but continuous reforms and assistance made it work. This research demonstrates the effectiveness of combining PBL and ESLVideo.com filling the void between language education and practice and prepares learners with the needed skills in the contemporary workforce.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the high number of verbal bullying cases that have a negative impact on students' self-confidence. This study aimed to examine the effect of verbal bullying on the self-confidence of fifth grade students. The method used was descriptive quantitative with a case study approach. From a total population of 86 students, 34 students were selected as a sample with considerations of representativeness and sufficient numbers for simple statistical analysis. Data were collected through a validated and tested questionnaire for reliability, then analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed that verbal bullying (taunts, insults, and threats) had a significant effect negative relationship with students' self-confidence, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.369; R² = 0.136; t(32) = -2.243; p < 0.05; and a 95% confidence interval. This means that verbal bullying is associated with 13.6% of the variation in self-confidence, while the rest is influenced by other factors. Although the contribution of influence is relatively small, the practical impact is quite important because victims of verbal bullying tend to hesitate to express their opinions, are afraid to speak in front of the class, and are passive in interacting. These findings align with Erikson's psychosocial theory and Bandura's self-efficacy theory, which explain that negative experiences can lower children's self-confidence. This study is limited by its sample size and limited scope of variables. Therefore, future research is recommended to involve a broader population and consider other psychosocial factors that influence students' self-confidence.

Abstract

Vocational students often face difficulties in developing English listening skills, particularly with authentic speech that includes varied accents, fast delivery, and technical terms. This Classroom Action Research conducted at SMK N 2 Depok explored the use of interactive ICT tools—YouTube and ESLVideo.com—to enhance listening comprehension among 36 eleventh-grade Computer and Network Engineering students. The intervention applied a Genre-Based Approach in two cycles, using authentic YouTube videos for exposure to real-world discourse and ESLVideo.com quizzes for interactive practice with immediate feedback. Data from tests, observations, and interviews showed substantial progress: students’ mean listening scores increased from 71.25 to 90.83, accompanied by higher engagement and confidence. Qualitative findings revealed that visual and verbal integration reduced comprehension difficulty and motivated students to participate more actively. Despite challenges such as technical issues and classroom management, reflective adjustments helped maintain consistent improvement. The study concludes that integrating interactive ICT tools can effectively enhance vocational students’ listening competence and foster independent learning aligned with professional communication needs.
