Abstract

Peran kelembagaan serta pemanfaatan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi dapat mendukung strategi penghidupan nelayan kecilTitle: Poverty and Livelihood Strategy of Small-Scale Fishers in Tanjung Kait, BantenSmall-scale fishers are community that is often seen as a poor community. The causes of poverty of the small-scale fishers are multidimensional, not only due to ecological factors, the unequal control of livelihood assets can be used in understanding poverty in small-scale fishers. Most of small-scale fishers are still trapped in poverty, but there are a small number of small-scale fishers who managed to get out of poverty trap. This study aims to analyse the poverty of small-scale fishers and its causes and livelihood strategies of small-scale fisher households to get out poverty. The research uses a sustainable livelihood approach.  The research was conducted in January until June 2022 in Tanjung Kait District, Tangerang Regency, Banten. The method used in this research was mixed methods with sequential exploratory strategy. Data collection techniques are in-depth interview and survey to fishing vessel owners and fishing vessel crews. The data analysis method used is interactive analysis mode for qualitative data and descriptive analysis for quantitative data. The result showed that poverty in small-scale fisher households are not permanent and only occurs during the lean season. Ownership of assets in the mode of production determines the economic obtained by small-scale fishers. At the household level, disparities in access and differences in the managing of livelihood assets determine the poverty of small-scale fishers. Several small-scale fisher households with livelihood strategies through job diversification by good management of livelihood assets can get out of the poverty trap. Institutional roles and the use of information and communication technology can support the livelihood strategies of small-scale fishers.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is a country with diverse religions, making it the world's most multicultural, plural, and heterogeneous country. The actual conditions are still not in line with the ideals, as conflicts between religious communities are common. Tolerance between religious communities is a perennial issue, owing to the diversity of religions among Indonesians, which leads to religious conflicts. Therefore, in managing the plurality of society, tolerance, equality, and cooperation are needed in social life, resulting in harmony. This study aims to determine the process of developing messages of tolerance and harmony, as well as the promotion process as a role model for other villages. This qualitative research with a case study approach taked the informants from employees of the Nglinggi village office, Klaten Regency, Indonesia. Data was collected using interviews, observations, and documentation to promote tolerance messages that had been built in other villages. The study's results demonstrate that the development of messages of harmony disseminated through the media related to religious community tolerance has a positive impact on other villages as literacy and promotion to build tolerance between religious communities can be applied to other villages.

Abstract

A significant challenge for developing nations, including Indonesia, is the occurrence of poverty. An example of a poverty-stricken area based on the number of poor people is Cianjur Regency. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the influence of religiosity, work ethics, age, education, occupation, and gender on the poverty level. It also intended to examine the perspectives of churches in Cianjur regarding poverty and its role in poverty mitigation. The methodology used was a mixed method with 100 respondents, and the sample size was determined proportionally and randomly from churches located in Cianjur Regency. The results from the BPS (Central Bureau of Statistics) showed that 18% of the 100 respondents lived in poverty, as opposed to the remaining 82%. In terms of work ethics, 71%, 29%, and 0% belonged to the high, moderate, and low categories, respectively. The independent variables that significantly affect the poverty level are religiosity, age, and occupation. The independent variables that were not significant were work ethics, education, and sex. This study also shows that the five churches had diverse perspectives on poverty. Some actively implemented programs are aimed at poverty reduction, while others lack specific initiatives to address poverty.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the resilience of Cipaku's displaced communities through narrative communication, shedding light on the unique sociolinguistic dynamics of development-induced displacement. Anchored in the Communication Theory of Resilience (CTR), it delves into how displaced individuals employ communicative processes. The study focused on interviews with 12 individuals selected using snowball sampling technique from Cipaku Village who have lived through displacement more than 10 years due to forced migration, and supported with field observation to gain documentation in capturing their memories and subsequent positive adaptations. Data was analyzed using the NVivo 12 Plus software, which facilitated the organization, coding, and thematic analysis relevant to the study's objectives. The findings of this research delves into how displaced individuals employ communicative processes; crafting normalcy, affirming identity, maintaining networks, employing alternative logics, and foregrounding positive actions to navigate the upheavals of displacement. It highlights how displaced populations actively reconstruct their social realities, preserve cultural identities, and sustain community cohesion through narrative communication. This study also points to gaps in understanding the erosion of linguistic diversity within displaced communities and recommends further exploration of digital communication's role in sustaining displaced communities' communicative networks.

Abstract

Digital ICT plays a strategic role in transforming input-intensive to knowledge-intensive agriculture. Its use has close relations to the farmers’ characteristics. This study aims to analyze the farmers’ characteristics and the intensity of utilizing various digital ICT applications/platforms. The survey was conducted on 150 smartphone-using farmers from Boyolali District, Central Java Province, Indonesia, accompanied by interviews and online observations. This research identifies digital divides and inequalities in leveraging Android farming applications, Facebook groups of farmers, WAG of farmers’ groups, Internet/Google information resources and YouTube. The correlation test indicated a significant correlation between gender, age, education, farming land area, farm income, internet quota budget, the availability of PC/Laptop (besides smartphones), and participation in farmers’ group with the intensity of leveraging some digital ICT applications. These correlations are unique and reflect farmers’ receptions and preferences for using digital ICT applications. This novelty is crucial for the development of knowledge-intensive agriculture that emphasizes the strategic role of development communication to facilitate knowledge sharing, involvement, and capacity development among farmers. Without understanding farmers’ characteristics and vulnerabilities, digital divide and inequality among farmers will continue to be reproduced.
