Abstract

Language is the primary means of communication used by humans to convey ideas, thoughts, and feelings in social life. In the Indonesian context, the Indonesian language plays an important role as both the national language and the official state language, functioning as a unifying tool for a society with diverse cultural backgrounds and regional languages. This study aims to conceptually examine the definition of language and the characteristics of the Indonesian language from a linguistic perspective. The research method employed is a qualitative approach using a library research design through the analysis of various relevant scientific literature sources. The results of the study indicate that the Indonesian language possesses several main characteristics: it is systematic, arbitrary, productive, dynamic, and conventional. These characteristics demonstrate that Indonesian is a structured linguistic system capable of developing in accordance with the communication needs of society. Therefore, understanding the concepts and characteristics of the Indonesian language is essential to support proper and correct language use in various fields of life, particularly in education and academic communication.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phonological realization of Indonesian language sounds in speakers' speech and to identify the factors influencing the pronunciation system. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using library research methods and content analysis techniques. The findings indicate that phonological realization in speakers' speech is dynamic and varied, influenced by the first language which consistently shapes articulatory patterns. Pronunciation variations manifest in the form of phoneme substitution, sound deletion, sound structure simplification, as well as differences in intonation and word stress. From a phonological perspective, such variation is part of a natural linguistic adaptation process that occurs in multilingual communities, rather than merely a language error. Furthermore, phonological realization has significant implications for communication effectiveness and Indonesian language learning. An understanding of phonological variation is expected to assist educators in designing more contextual and effective learning strategies for students with diverse regional language backgrounds.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the obstacles faced by teachers in teaching reading comprehension to upper-grade elementary school students with low reading interest at SD Negeri 187/I Teratai. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach through observation and interviews with the fourth-grade teacher, Nursaadatul Fitri. The findings show that the teacher encountered several main challenges, including students’ lack of focus during lessons, passive participation in listening activities, unfamiliarity with reading seriously, and low reading interest. In the teaching process, the teacher used several strategies, such as oral reading, alternating reading, individual reading, rewriting the content of texts, and presenting the written results again to help students understand the reading material. The learning media used included textbooks, storybooks, photocopied materials, and reading resources from the school library. The findings also indicate that students’ low reading interest is influenced by home habits, parental attention, the surrounding environment, and the use of mobile devices. Although the teacher’s efforts have helped improve students’ reading comprehension, the results have not yet been optimal because reading achievement depends not only on the teacher, but also on family support and consistent reading habits.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of assessment in Indonesian language learning for lower grade elementary students. The research is motivated by the importance of assessment as a tool to measure and improve students' language skills, while in practice it is still not fully optimal. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach conducted at SDN 198/1 Pasar Baru with a third-grade teacher as the main informant. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results show that the teacher has implemented assessment continuously through process and outcome assessment using written tests and oral questioning. Assessment has also considered students' learning processes and individual development. However, several problems were found, including differences in students' ability levels, limited variation in assessment methods, and unclear instructions during assessment activities. These constraints affect the accuracy and comprehensiveness of assessment results. Therefore, improvements are needed through the use of varied assessment techniques, adaptation of tasks to students’ characteristics, and clearer instructional delivery. Thus, assessment in Indonesian language learning is expected to be more effective, fair, and able to comprehensively reflect students’ language development.

Abstract

This study examines the literacy barriers faced by third-grade students in the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in Indonesian language learning at SDN 111/I Muara Bulian. The problem addressed in this research arises from the mismatch between the demands of PBL, which requires adequate reading and comprehension skills, and the diverse literacy abilities of students. This study aims to analyze the forms of literacy barriers experienced by students during the implementation of PBL. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through classroom observations and teacher interviews. The research subjects consisted of 11 students in class IIIB and one classroom teacher as a supporting informant. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal two main literacy barriers. First, students experience reading fluency difficulties (slow readers), which hinder the efficiency of learning time and disrupt the sequence of PBL activities. Second, students demonstrate low reading comprehension, as they struggle to understand and restate the content of texts, limiting their participation in problem-solving discussions. These two barriers are interconnected, forming a chain that negatively affects the effectiveness of PBL implementation. The study concludes that the success of PBL is not only determined by the teacher’s mastery of instructional strategies but also depends heavily on students’ foundational literacy skills. Therefore, structured literacy scaffolding is necessary prior to implementing PBL to ensure optimal learning outcomes

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the Indonesian language learning difficulties experienced by fifth-grade students at SD Negeri 13/1 Muara Bulian. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through classroom observations and in-depth interviews with the class teacher. The findings indicate that students generally demonstrate adequate reading and listening skills, yet face significant challenges in speaking, vocabulary mastery, and identifying the main idea of a paragraph. The dominant contributing factors include regional language interference in daily communication, low motivation for writing tasks, and insufficient variation in instructional strategies. The teacher has employed audiovisual media and repetitive exercises; however, limited media availability remains a barrier. This study recommends the implementation of context-based learning models and sustained literacy reinforcement to address the students' language skill gaps.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the reading comprehension ability of third-grade students at SDN 14/I Sungai Baung and to identify the factors that influence it. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The subjects of this study were 23 third-grade students and their classroom teacher. The results showed that the majority of students were at the medium category of reading comprehension ability, with only a small portion reaching the high category. Several students were still struggling with understanding the implicit meaning of texts, identifying the main idea of paragraphs, and retelling the content of readings in their own words. Factors that influenced students’ reading comprehension ability included students’ reading habits at home, family support, the teaching strategies used by the teacher and students’ vocabulary mastery. The findings of this study indicate the need for more varied and student-centered reading learning strategies to improve students’ reading comprehension skills in early grades of elementary school.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the linguistic characteristics used in the social interactions of elementary school children and the factors influencing them within the school environment. Utilizing a library research method with a qualitative approach, this study synthesizes various academic sources from the last decade to map children's communication patterns. The results indicate that the linguistic characteristics of elementary students reflect a cognitive transition from egocentric to sociocentric behavior, where children begin to develop pragmatic skills and politeness strategies in social negotiation. Furthermore, a strong phenomenon of diglossia was found in certain regions, characterized by a functional separation between local languages as a symbol of solidarity and Indonesian as a formal educational medium. To overcome communication barriers, educators implement code-switching and code-mixing strategies to bridge student understanding. This study concludes that the language of elementary school children is a dynamic blend of cultural identity, digital media influence, and adaptation to social norms in the school setting. Keywords: Language Characteristics, Social Interaction, Elementary School Children, Pragmatics, Literature Study.
