Abstract

Vocabulary is an integral aspect when learning a foreign language. The issue discussed in this research includes learning new vocabularies by Japanese language learners who are competent and the relevance of vocabulary-learning strategy by Oxford (1990) to foreign language learners' current condition. This research aims to elaborate on the relevant vocabulary-learning strategy for foreign learners of the Japanese language. The research methodology is qualitative, with semi-structured interviews by adopting the questionnaire by Saengpakdeejit (2014). The vocabulary-learning strategy is classified based on the taxonomy of vocabulary learning strategy by Oxford (1990), Schmitt (1997), and Churches (2009). The result shows that Japanese language learners who are competent apply the vocabulary learning strategy, as Oxford (1990) stated. The dominant strategy used by the participants is a cognitive strategy, which allows new vocabularies to be stored in the participant's memory. Furthermore, information related to new vocabularies needs to be stored in the participant's memory using vocabularies. Besides, a competent Japanese language learner can use the learning resources, printed materials, and digital application to improve the vocabularies.

Abstract

There are many ways that could be done to introduce unique culture of a country to the international world; one of them is through translation works.  This can be seen through Japanese literary works, which are translated into other languages.  Botchan is one of the best literary works from Natsume Soseki that was translated into several languages, including Indonesian language, with the title of the translation Botchan Si Anak Bengal by Jonjon Johana. This novel tells the story about the life of Botchan, a teacher, who faces several conflicts. In this novel, there are many cultural terms so that when they are translated, they would trigger some difficulties because some of the terms still do not have equivalences in target language.  The material cultural terms include foods, clothes, houses and their parts, places, and means of transportation. They can be found in the words geisha, kimono, soba, and so on. This research analyzed the equivalence in the translation with the informant as the benchmark to know whether the message in the target text is equivalent with the source text. This method is based on dynamic equivalence concept by Nida and Taber (1974:12). Based on the informant, the methods and techniques used by translator in maintaining the equivalence of message were analyzed. The used theory was the translation methods for cultural terms by Newmark (1988) and translation techniques by Catford (1965) and Hoed (2006).The research showed that the cultural terms were not easy to translate since they were related to the context of culture in the source language. It can be seen from the existing translation data showing two characteristics of equivalent translation that can be achieved through several methods, the understanding of language and culture of source language and target language; the use of suitable translation procedure and technique (transference, cultural equivalence, descriptive translation, transposition, modulation, additional explanation, and standard translation); and the right choice of word based on the intention of the author of novel.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyzed the responses of readers regarding the characteristics of Arafo women in web manga. In this case, the researchers want to see the responses of the readers regarding occupation, marriage, and the lifestyle of Arafo women. With the reception theory by Hall, it could be seen whether the message from the author of the web manga about Arafo women can be fully understood or interpreted differently by the readers. This research used a qualitative method with the research steps; namely identifying the suitable respondents, planning the instruments in the form of the list of questions for an interview, collecting data through field study (related to interview), and literature review (related to the written data). Data analysis was performed with stages; namely processing the result of the interview, reducing data, grouping data, interpreting data, and concluding data. The research result shows that there are three types of readers based on the theory of Hall; namely dominant/hegemonic position regarding age and occupation of Arafo women, the negotiated position related to issue of independence, and oppositional position related to issues of spouse and marriage. Different feedbacks from the readers on the same text are affected by some factors; namely knowledge about the condition of Japanese society and Arafo women, a difference of experience, and difference of perspective.

Abstract

The research aimed to interpret the meaning of aspects in the verbal and visual texts to identify whether these two textscreated interplay. It was intended to understand the meaning conveyed by the writer and illustrator in a Japanese children’s book entitled ‘Kuroino’ (Little Shadow). The research used the approaches for verbal text analysis by Halliday about Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), and visual text analysis by Kress and van Leeuwen about Visual Grammar (VG). The research method was descriptive qualitative by explaining two data types: clauses in the Japanese language and images in the storybook. The data analysis of every aspect in the three metafunctions of language and the three metafunctions of images show the meaning that completes each other. In the analysis of ideational meaning, interpersonal meaning, and textual meaning, the writer narrates the friendship and adventure of ‘Kuroino’ (the Black) and Watashi (I). Meanwhile, in the analysis of representational meaning, interactive meaning, and compositional meaning, the illustrator describes two characters in a book entitled ‘Kuroino’ as the focuses in some pictures. Besides, the illustrator describes the background in detail as if he invites the reader to participate in the adventure of these two characters. Although verbal and visual texts describe a story from two different perspectives, in ‘Kuroino’, these texts collaborate to create a message in the story with synergy and meaning to be easily understood by the readers by maintaining the entertainment aspect in a story narrated.

Abstract

This research examines ideational, interpersonal, and textual meanings by applying the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014). The qualitative methodology was used to comprehensively explain the meaning in a Japanese storybook entitled Kibou no Bokujou ‘A Livestock of Hope’ by Mori & Yoshida (2015). Based on the analysis of the lexico-grammatical aspect used in the text, it can be concluded that these three meanings simultaneously relate. Ideational meaning shows the domination of material processes generally found in children's narratives. Interpersonal meanings show a tendency of IndicativeDeclarative MOOD, which can be interpreted as the author of the storybook being positioned as the information provider to the readers. Textual meaning shows that the information distribution is frequently realized with the unmarked topical theme, which can be interpreted as most of the texts' subjects are farm owners and their cows. Meanwhile, the thematic progression is dominated by a reiteration pattern (constant theme). It can be interpreted that the same theme repeatedly and sequentially appears to help the readers understand the text. A storybook entitled Kibou no Bokujou has successfully provided information about the struggle of a farm owner who chose to stay on his farm after the earthquake and tsunami. The information is delivered in a narrative that can be easily understood without putting aside the entertainment aspect of a storybook.

Abstract

AbstractIn Law no. 18 of 2008 Article 12 states that waste management must be environmentally sound so that awareness and real action from the community are highly expected in supporting this policy. To realize this, it is necessary to hold organic waste management training activities so that the community is moved and aware of the importance of their participation in waste management, especially within the school sphere. Based on observations made at Kemala Bhayangkari Elementary School it was found that the awareness of school residents in waste management, especially organic waste, is still very low. Therefore, the service team compiled an agenda for the implementation of the Takakura Compost Fertilizer Training, namely making Takakura compost, in order to create independent and productive school residents through Organic Waste Management. Making Takakura compost is relatively practical and simple, because it doesn't require land, so it's very suitable for small scale. This activity can also support the school to remain beautiful and clean and avoid air pollution, which causes bad odors. The results of processing organic waste into Takakura compost can also be used as a good planting medium to help schools plant green trees so that schools remain beautiful. The implementation of this training started with a field survey and coordination with the school, followed by program socialization and program implementation. In the implementation process, starting from the stages: 1) Garbage collection, 2) Waste segregation, 3) Implementation preparation, in the form of preparation of supporting tools and materials, 3) Takakura composting, and 4) Trial. Lastly is the evaluation of activities that aim to evaluate the progress of the implementation of takakura composting at Kemala Bhayangkari Elementary School. The results of the training show that with the new skills they already have, the participants' awareness of organic waste management is also increasing.

Abstract

Background: One of the treatments to overcome the problem of discolored teeth is to do tooth whitening or bleaching. The tooth whitening agent that is often used is carbamide peroxide which is applied directly to the tooth enamel surface. Several factors that can affect tooth enamel are the degree of acidity or potential hydrogen (pH), acid concentration, dissolving time and the presence of calcium-like ions, and the level of water hardness. Most of the people in Banjarmasin City still frequently use PDAM water as drinking water and for daily use Objective: To analyze the effect of immersing PDAM water and distilled water on tooth surface roughness after application of 20% carbamide peroxide. Methods: Using a pure experimental design with the Posttest Only With Control Group Design and simple random sampling technique. The total sample was 16 maxillary first premolars which were divided into 3 treatment groups and 1 control group. Results: analysis of the One Way Anova test with Bonferroni's Post-Hoc showed no difference in roughness between the PDAM water immersion and distilled water groups with or without the application of 20% carbamide peroxide (p>0.05). There was a difference in roughness between the group that was given carbamide peroxide and the group that was not given carbamide peroxide 20% (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is an effect of PDAM water immersion on tooth surface roughness after application of 20% carbamide peroxide, but the resulting roughness is not significant. Keywords: PDAM water, Tooth Surface Roughness, 20% Carbamide Peroxide
