The preventive program was built from the infusing important aspects from very beginning age. Series of actions were implemented: specified characters from Big Book story (a boy, a girl, a mother, a father, an aunt, an uncle, a stranger, a police, and a teacher) as puppet characters, colored the puppets, to played them due to the plot of the story. The research proved that visual aid helped the process of instilling the core message to children, and empowering them to say no against bad touch. In the process of transferring the message, certain aspects must be taken for granted. As private parts are not included in easy to be digested theme for children, considering the lack of information given by parents, the material transferred & language used to these young learners must be well tailored to children’s age.

Abstract

English department students of IAIN Pekalongan have many shortcomings in memorizing vocabulary. This is evidenced by our observations when students are speaking in front of the class. Sometimes, students are confused about conveying information they want to deliver because they are constrained by a lack of memorization of vocabulary. The situation happens when students must use English in active discussions. So far, the students tend to memorize vocabulary. Besides that, vocabulary books are less effective and less interesting because it only relies on the use of language skills. One way to learn vocabulary in a simple way is through codenames game. This game provides many vocabularies that must be guessed by the players in a team. Then, another player should describe the word to be guessed. So, this research’s questions are how the codenames game is implemented due to learning English in a fun way. By reflecting the question, the purpose of this research is to provide information on the implementation of codenames game which helps English department students of IAIN Pekalongan enrich and build their vocabulary through a fun way using game cards. Based on our observation, the result showed that applying the codenames game could enrich the students’ vocabularies, be an alternative entertainer so that the students do not easily get bored, and strengthen the students’ memory. Thus, it can be concluded that playing codenames game promotes a helping way to enrich and build the students’ vocabulary.

Abstract

Nowadays, the lack of opportunity for students to practice speaking in English classroom makes them difficult to improve their speaking ability. Therefore, this study will address PMI, stands for Plus, Minus and Interesting strategy that can encourage students to speak by thinking the plus, minus and interesting points of the topic. This study used Quasi-Experimental research for the students at second grade of SMP-IT As-Salam Ambon. It is aimed to find out whether the students who are taught by using PMI strategy had better achievement in their speaking ability rather than those who are taught by using Question and Answer strategy. This study was conducted during 8 meetings. First meeting was the pre-test, 6 meetings were the treatment and the last meeting was the post-test. The result reveal that after PMI strategy had been applied, the students in experimental class was significantly had better achievement in speaking ability than the students in control class based on their pre-test and post-test result. Thus, PMI strategy could influence students’ speaking ability because it can open the opportunity for the students to elaborate their ideas, to help them make a decision in a short time and to increase their participation in speaking activity.

Abstract

HOS Tjokroaminoto is one of national heroes known as Guru Bangsa (Teacher of the Nation). Tjokroaminoto gets this title as he and his thought inspire Indonesian political figures. Tjokroaminoto is the only person in the beginning of 20th century who vocally and bluntly stated that Indies (Indonesia) had to establish its own governance. It is then termed the independence. Independence can be realized with the awareness of national consciousness in the national level, not in local level anymore. The movie entitled Guru Bangsa HOS Tjokroaminoto tells about the history reflecting one of Indonesian national figures, Tjokroaminoto. This movie tells about Tjokroaminoto as the main figure driving the nationalism and describes the history of Indonesia. The interesting aspects from this movie are the nationalism values described on Tjokroaminoto. In this research, the researcher analyze the movie entitled Guru Bangsa HOS Tjokroaminoto with historical literature approach in order to reveal the nationalism thought of Tjokroaminoto and behavior supporting his thought. This research is expected to raise the nationalism awareness in the recent young generation of Indonesia. Based on the research result, there are four main facts about the nationalism in Tjokroaminoto in the movie entitled Guru Bangsa HOS Tjokroaminoto. These historical facts are nationalism thought and behavior of Tjokroaminoto based on four factors of nationalism according to Hertz (1958), (1) Desire to achieve the unity (in 1912, Tjokroaminoto joined Sarekat Islam/Islamic Union), (2) Desire to achieve the independence (in 1905 Tjokroaminoto retired from his job as clerk), (3) Desire to achieve independence, superiority, authenticity, and distinctiveness by wearing blangkon and jarik (cloth) as the nationalism symbol and by wearing suit and bowties to show the equality with foreign nation in terms of thought, (4) Desire to catch up the honor of nation with the progressive idea of Tjokroaminoto, compulsory education for 15 years.

Abstract

Vocabulary is an integral aspect when learning a foreign language. The issue discussed in this research includes learning new vocabularies by Japanese language learners who are competent and the relevance of vocabulary-learning strategy by Oxford (1990) to foreign language learners' current condition. This research aims to elaborate on the relevant vocabulary-learning strategy for foreign learners of the Japanese language. The research methodology is qualitative, with semi-structured interviews by adopting the questionnaire by Saengpakdeejit (2014). The vocabulary-learning strategy is classified based on the taxonomy of vocabulary learning strategy by Oxford (1990), Schmitt (1997), and Churches (2009). The result shows that Japanese language learners who are competent apply the vocabulary learning strategy, as Oxford (1990) stated. The dominant strategy used by the participants is a cognitive strategy, which allows new vocabularies to be stored in the participant's memory. Furthermore, information related to new vocabularies needs to be stored in the participant's memory using vocabularies. Besides, a competent Japanese language learner can use the learning resources, printed materials, and digital application to improve the vocabularies.

Abstract

There are many ways that could be done to introduce unique culture of a country to the international world; one of them is through translation works.  This can be seen through Japanese literary works, which are translated into other languages.  Botchan is one of the best literary works from Natsume Soseki that was translated into several languages, including Indonesian language, with the title of the translation Botchan Si Anak Bengal by Jonjon Johana. This novel tells the story about the life of Botchan, a teacher, who faces several conflicts. In this novel, there are many cultural terms so that when they are translated, they would trigger some difficulties because some of the terms still do not have equivalences in target language.  The material cultural terms include foods, clothes, houses and their parts, places, and means of transportation. They can be found in the words geisha, kimono, soba, and so on. This research analyzed the equivalence in the translation with the informant as the benchmark to know whether the message in the target text is equivalent with the source text. This method is based on dynamic equivalence concept by Nida and Taber (1974:12). Based on the informant, the methods and techniques used by translator in maintaining the equivalence of message were analyzed. The used theory was the translation methods for cultural terms by Newmark (1988) and translation techniques by Catford (1965) and Hoed (2006).The research showed that the cultural terms were not easy to translate since they were related to the context of culture in the source language. It can be seen from the existing translation data showing two characteristics of equivalent translation that can be achieved through several methods, the understanding of language and culture of source language and target language; the use of suitable translation procedure and technique (transference, cultural equivalence, descriptive translation, transposition, modulation, additional explanation, and standard translation); and the right choice of word based on the intention of the author of novel.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyzed the responses of readers regarding the characteristics of Arafo women in web manga. In this case, the researchers want to see the responses of the readers regarding occupation, marriage, and the lifestyle of Arafo women. With the reception theory by Hall, it could be seen whether the message from the author of the web manga about Arafo women can be fully understood or interpreted differently by the readers. This research used a qualitative method with the research steps; namely identifying the suitable respondents, planning the instruments in the form of the list of questions for an interview, collecting data through field study (related to interview), and literature review (related to the written data). Data analysis was performed with stages; namely processing the result of the interview, reducing data, grouping data, interpreting data, and concluding data. The research result shows that there are three types of readers based on the theory of Hall; namely dominant/hegemonic position regarding age and occupation of Arafo women, the negotiated position related to issue of independence, and oppositional position related to issues of spouse and marriage. Different feedbacks from the readers on the same text are affected by some factors; namely knowledge about the condition of Japanese society and Arafo women, a difference of experience, and difference of perspective.
