Abstract

Indonesia’s tropical forests harbor exceptional plant diversity; however, rising global demand for forest-based commodities is intensifying extraction and increasing the risk of extinction. In North Sumatra, Amorphophallus gigas persists within community-managed agroforestry understorey systems, yet a surge in tuber demand since 2019 has accelerated harvesting and expanded trade networks from local collectors to export markets. These pressures threaten the species and highlight the need to identify and coordinate key actors in governing sustainable harvesting and habitat management. This study applies a prospective mixed qualitative–quantitative approach, combining in-depth interviews with farmers, village authorities, collectors, government agencies, academics, non-governmental organizations, industry representatives, and exporters. The MACTOR method was used to assess actor influence and dependence and to map convergence and divergence across three objectives: species conservation, agroforestry habitat protection, and income-oriented cultivation. Results indicate that the Center for Conservation of Natural Resources (BBKSDA) North Sumatra is the most influential and least dependent actor, while farmers remain highly dependent despite managing most habitats on private land. Habitat protection is the most mobilizing objective but shows substantial divergence, reflecting unresolved trade-offs between conservation and cultivation. These findings underscore governance imbalances and the need for inclusive, adaptive strategies, including farmer incentives, capacity building, formalized harvesting rules, and synergies between ex situ conservation and sustainable agroforestry. Abstract

The availability of phosphorus (P) is one of the main limiting factors for plant productivity in Andisol soils due to the strong fixation of P by allophane clay minerals, aluminum and iron oxides. Giving the phosphate solubilizing fungi (PSF) is an alternative to increase available P which plants can use to increase the yield. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of phosphate-solubilizing fungi (PSF) in improving P availability on Andisol. The experiment used a block randomized design (BRD) with three replications. The first factor is Andisol soil origin (Soil 1 and Soil 2) and the second is isolate of phosphate solubilizing fungi (Aspergillus niger P13, A. niger P21, A. pseudodeflectus BJ21, and A. niger BJ23). The research results showed that Soil 1 generally produces higher growth and yield of shallots than soil 2. A. pseudodeflectus BJ21 can increase available P by 48.46% and A. niger P13 by 45.71% compared to without phosphate solubilizing fungi. A. niger P13 can reduce P retention by 18.48% compared to without phosphate solubilizing fungi. A. niger BJ23 can increase plant P uptake by 35.35% compared to without phosphate solubilizing fungi. Inoculation of isolates A. niger P13 and A. pseudodeflectus BJ21 was able to adapt and grow well on Andisol soil which significantly increased the population compared to the control. Indigenous phosphate-solubilizing fungi (A. niger and A. pseudodeflectus) improved P availability and uptake in Andisol, reduced P retention, adapted well to the soil environment, and showed strong potential as environmentally friendly biofertilizers based on local resources.

Abstract

The oil palm empty fruit bunches are solid waste produced from the processing of oil palms which have a large amount of potential to be used as compost and are expected to improve the physical, biological and chemical properties of the subsoil. This study aimed to evaluate the best combination between oil palm empty fruit bunches compost and rice husk charcoal on soil chemical properties in tomato. This research was conducted in Sona Village, Labuhanbatu Regency on December 2019-March 2020. Analysis of soil chemical properties was conducted at the Socfindo Seed Production and Laboratories (SSPL) Laboratory of PT. Socfin Indonesia. The study was conducted with a factorial randomized block design with 2 factors. The first factor was the application of oil palm empty bunches which consists of no oil palm empty bunches (control), 0.5 kg/polybag, 0.7 kg/polybag and 1 kg/polybag. The second factor was the application of rice husk charcoal which consists of non-husk charcoal (control), consisting of 0.2 kg/polybag and 0.4 kg/polybag. Data that had a significant effect after analysis of variance continued with DMRT at the level of α = 5%. The results showed that application of oil palm empty fruit bunches (0.7 kg/polybag) significantly increased pH and C-organic. Application of rice husk charcoal (0.2 kg/polybag) significantly increased C-organic and P-available.
