Abstract

Typhoid, a serious bacterial disease, has spurred research into natural products like rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) for potential treatments. This study investigates the chemical components found in Rosella extract using spectroscopy approximation, assisted by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The antibacterial activity of rosella extract on bacteria from stool cultures of suspected typhoid cases continues to be evaluated. The antibacterial experimental employed a post-test-only control group design, using 30 μg Chloramphenicol as a positive control, sterile distilled water as the negative control, rosella extract at concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% as the observed variable. Stool samples from typhoid patients were identified, and Enterobacter aerogenes were detected using VITEK®2 testing. Cultivated bacteria from the samples were tested to determine the antibacterial activity of the rosella extract. Phytochemical studies confirmed the presence of tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins in the rosella extract. Additionally, the spectroscopic evaluation from FTIR and GC-MS showed the presence of chemical groups, including esters, aldehydes, and aromatics. Further clinical tests demonstrated antibacterial activity at the minimum inhibitory concentration. The results showed an increasing inhibition zone of bacterial growth, correlating with the increase in rosella extract concentration. Although the antibacterial activity of rosella extract was lower compared to commercial Chloramphenicol, this natural product has demonstrated antibacterial activity and shows potential as a candidate for future herbal medicine development.

Abstract

Introduction. Ethanolic extract of rosella flowers (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) contains secondary metabolite compounds: flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins. This study aims to determine whether the ethanol extract of rosella flowers has the potential to regenerate pancreatic β cells in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) with alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus models.  Methods. The type of research used was an in vivo laboratory experimental study with a true experimental design. The experimental animals used as test objects in this study were male rats (Rattus norvegicus L.), weighing 100-110 grams. The test objects were 30 rats, divided into 6 groups randomly, each containing 5 rats, the groups consisted of K (N), K (-), K (+), P (1), P (2), and P (3). The level of histopathological damage to the pancreas was observed with HE staining at 400x magnification, using binocular light microscope type CX23 and BX51. Results. The study showed that the ethanol preparation of rosella flower extract at a dose of 1500 mg/kgBW and 3000 mg/kgBW BB was effective in regenerating pancreatic β cells with a damage value of 0 and at a dose of 750 mg/kgBW with a damage value of 2 did not provide a maximum regeneration effect on pancreatic β cells in male white rats induced by alloxan. Conclusion. The results of this research show that the ethanol extract of rosella flowers has an influence on the regeneration of pancreatic β cells so that it can be used for supportive treatment in the management of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Intercultural communication is a vital component of modern education, necessitating efforts to enhance students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). Achieving this requires intentional strategies, such as exposing students to international learning environments. Immersing students in international learning environments—such as through international programs or short-term overseas courses—can foster ICC development.  Consequently, identifying shifts in ICC and effective strategies for its development is essential. This study was aimed at exploring the shift in ICC as experienced by international students as well as the intercultural communication problems encountered. This mixed method research was of explanatory-exploratory design with the respondents of Indonesian students taking a course in Singapore and foreign students pursuing a study in Indonesia. Data collection instruments used were questionnaires, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews. Findings of the study reveal that students taking courses in other countries improved their ICC in all four categories in terms of knowledge, attitude, skills, and awareness. Problems encountered included linguistic, social, and cultural problems.

Abstract

Maluku Province faces great challenges in improving access to and quality of family planning services, especially for the Long-Term Contraceptive Method. With a low MHJP participation rate of 18.2% compared to the national average of 23.9%, and an unmet need of 19.21%, it is clear that there are still gaps in family planning services. Although the realization of the Family Planning Operational Assistance budget has reached 94.27%, its utilization has not been optimal in increasing the coverage and quality of family planning services. This is due to weaknesses in planning, monitoring, flexibility in the use of funds, and coordination between stakeholders. Optimizing the management of BOKB must be a priority to increase the effectiveness of the family planning program in Maluku. Regulation-based policies supported by the theory of Good Governance in Public Finance and Policy Implementation are approaches that can ensure transparency, accountability, and effectiveness in the management of BOKB funds. For this reason, the most recommended policy is BOKB planning based on data and field needs and increased transparency and accountability in fund management. The implementation of this policy is expected to increase the coverage of MHJP family planning services, especially in remote areas and islands, in order to reduce the unmet need rate and expand access to services for the community.

Abstract

Persons with autism disorder generally have difficulty in social and communication. Due to these impairments, they are often ignored and misunderstood by others. One of the phenomena of autism is portrayed in a film entitled Please Stand By. This study is aimed to analyze the features of autistic person and the kinds of responses given by autistic person represented by Wendy, an autistic character in the film. This study employed descriptive qualitative method and a psycholinguistic approach. In addition, this study used Wing and Gould’s theory to identify the features of autistic person and Rothwell’s theory to identify the kinds of responses given by autistic person. The results of this study show two important points. First, based on the findings of this study, there are three features of autistic person experienced by Wendy, they are qualitative impairment in reciprocal social interaction, qualitative impairment in verbal and non-verbal communication and in imaginative activity, and markedly restricted repertoire of activities and interests. Second, there are three kinds of responses given by Wendy, they are cognitively irrelevant responses, cognitively relevant responses, and cognitively disruptive and socially inappropriate responses. In cognitively disruptive and socially inappropriate responses, there are odd responses, relevant but not too polite responses, and marginally relevant responses. The findings reveal that persons with autism can provide relevant responses to others even though they have difficulty in social and communication.

Abstract

Heterogeneous CaO catalyst composited with rGO has been developed to improve catalytic efficiency and biodiesel yield. Used cooking oil was chosen as the feedstock because it is underutilized, while rGO was used to overcome the weaknesses of CaO, which has a small surface area, as well as to enhance catalyst activity through an increased number of active sites and catalytic stability. The purpose of this study is to increase the yield and characterize biodiesel according to SNI 04-7182-2015. Biodiesel production was carried out through the transesterification reaction of triglycerides with metanol using CaO/rGO catalyst. Variations in the molar ratio of oil to metanol (1:6, 1:9, and 1:12) and catalyst concentration (0.5% and 1%) at 55–60°C were applied to optimize the yield. The resulting biodiesel was characterized based on physical parameters, including density, viscosity, flash point, water content, and acid number according to SNI standards. The best result was obtained at a metanol to oil molar ratio of 1:12 with the addition of 1% catalyst, yielding a biodiesel yield of 89.5%, all of which met the SNI standards except for viscosity, which was lower than the SNI specification. Without catalyst at a 1:9 ratio, biodiesel yield reached only 65%. The CaO/rGO catalyst can increase biodiesel yield at a 1:12 ratio and meets SNI standards for flash point, acid number, water content, and density but does not meet the SNI standard for viscosity.
