Abstract

This study aims to describe the learning approach of the Taisirul Kholaq Book in shaping the honesty character of students at the Al-Barokah Islamic Boarding School in Probolinggo Regency. The background of this study is based on the phenomenon of weak implementation of honesty values among students even though honesty material has been taught textually and routinely in learning activities. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design. Data collection techniques include participatory observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, questionnaires, and focus group discussions (FGD). Data analysis was carried out using the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that the Taisirul Kholaq Book is implemented through contextual and narrative learning methods, supported by the exemplary role of ustadz and the Islamic boarding school environment that creates a positive moral climate. However, the internalization of honesty values is not optimal due to the rote approach, social pressure, and low affective involvement of students. This study recommends holistic learning that integrates cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects in a balanced manner.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the ITMARIS student organization (Ittihadut Thullab Ma’had Riyadlus Sholihin) in strengthening character education among students at Riyadlus Sholihin Islamic Boarding School in Probolinggo City. The study is grounded in the need for character development that is not merely normative but also applicative and participatory. ITMARIS serves as a platform for the actualization of character values through students’ direct involvement in structured organizational activities. This research employed a qualitative case study approach, with ITMARIS as the unit of analysis. Data were collected through interviews with organization administrators, students, caregivers, and supervisors, participatory observation, and document analysis. Data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation, while data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and inductive conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that ITMARIS effectively instills values of responsibility, leadership, independence, discipline, and cooperation among students. Organizational involvement also enhances students’ self-confidence, communication skills, and social relationships. The success of character development is supported by the humanistic and dialogical approach of the supervisors. Despite challenges related to student motivation and limited facilities, ITMARIS sustains its programs through continuous evaluation and innovation, thereby contributing as a contextual and holistic model for character education in Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

Abstract

The use of engaging instructional media is important in supporting effective English language teaching, particularly in improving students’ motivation and assisting teachers’ instructional practices. This community service program aimed to develop a student’s workbook using comic strips as ready-to-use teaching materials for English teachers and to evaluate teachers’ perceptions of its potential classroom use. The program was conducted in collaboration with a Muhammadiyah-affiliated secondary school and implemented through several stages, including needs analysis, topic selection, learning activity planning, material development, and evaluation. The evaluation involved 12 English teachers who participated in workshops introducing the developed workbook. A mixed-methods approach was employed to assess the outcomes of the program. Quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale, while qualitative data were obtained through an online Focus Group Discussion. The findings show that teachers had positive perceptions of the comic-based student’s workbook. All evaluated aspects obtained mean scores above 4.00, indicating strong agreement. Teachers perceived that the workbook could enhance students’ interest and engagement, clarify learning objectives, provide meaningful learning activities, and support English language skill development. From the teachers’ perspective, the workbook was considered practical, easy to use, and helpful in reducing lesson preparation time. Teachers also expressed comfort and intention to use the workbook in their future teaching. In conclusion, this community service program demonstrates that developing a comic-based student’s workbook is a feasible and effective approach to supporting teachers’ professional development and improving English language teaching practices.

Abstract

In the past decade, research in Islamic education and human ethics has seen a significant acceleration, marked by increased publications, global collaboration, and strong interdisciplinary integration, especially after the pandemic. This research focuses on developing a framework that integrates Islamic spirituality, social justice, and technological innovations in education. The study employs a bibliometric analysis to map trends, influential authors, and key themes in the integration of Islamic education with environmental awareness. Findings show an epistemological shift toward Transformative Islamic Humanism, a new paradigm that connects Islamic values with contemporary social issues, such as sustainability and justice. This shift is supported by the dominance of Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities in the research, reflecting the growing humanistic orientation in Islamic education. Geographically, Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia, emerges as a new research hub. The study identifies future research directions, including developing digital ethics in Islamic education, integrating halal values with sustainability, and fostering community empowerment through Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This research contributes to bridging Islamic education with environmental sustainability goals and offers new avenues for international collaboration. Practically, it supports the development of eco-Islamic curricula and policies that align with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

This study aims to critically examine the dominance of algorithm-based education in the contemporary digital era and to reconstruct Islamic educational philosophy as a critical framework against secular digital humanism. The phenomenon addressed in this research is the increasing reliance on algorithms, artificial intelligence, and data-driven systems in education, which tend to reduce human beings to functional and measurable subjects while positioning education as a technical process oriented toward efficiency and performance. Such conditions marginalize the spiritual, moral, and existential dimensions of education. This study employs a qualitative philosophical approach using critical-conceptual analysis, drawing upon classical and contemporary sources in Islamic educational philosophy and digital education studies. The analysis focuses on the epistemological and ontological assumptions underlying secular digital humanism and contrasts them with key concepts in Islamic educational thought, such as tazkiyat al-nafs (purification of the soul), ta’dīb (formation of adab), and the ideal of insān kāmil. The findings reveal that Islamic educational philosophy functions not merely as a complementary value system but as a fundamental philosophical critique that challenges the reductionist logic of algorithmic education. This study further demonstrates that Islamic philosophy reorients educational goals by subordinating technology and algorithms to transcendental purposes centered on soul formation and moral integrity. The main contribution of this research lies in offering a humanistic–transcendental framework that enriches global discussions on digital education by integrating spiritual and ethical dimensions that are largely absent from mainstream secular approaches.

Abstract

TPQ (Qur’anic learning) in Islamic elementary schools ideally requires teachers with strong Tahsin and tajwid proficiency, sound pedagogy, and consistent spiritual guidance. At MI Muhammadiyah 1 Probolinggo, however, most cross subject teachers are assigned to teach TPQ, resulting in uneven instructional quality. This qualitative study employed an intrinsic case study design to (1) map TPQ practices among interdisciplinary teachers and identify dominant challenges in tajwid and tilawah, classroom management, and assessment; (2) describe teachers’ religio-pedagogical motivation (worship orientation, professional trustworthiness or amanah, learner centered compassion or rahmah, and commitment to competence development and its links to instructional quality; and (3) examine the effects of targeted mentoring on teachers’ instructional competence and students’ tilawah and tajwid achievement and participation over one semester. Data were collected through in depth interviews (teachers, school leaders, parent or student representatives), classroom observations, and document analysis; thematic analysis followed open axial selective coding and was strengthened through triangulation, member checking, and an audit trail. The targeted mentoring was implemented through school-based mechanisms involving the principal, the TPQ coordinator, and peer teachers, while the researcher acted as a reflective facilitator and a limited participant observer who documented changes in instructional practices. Findings indicate that early challenges centered on inconsistent tajwid feedback, limited differentiation in heterogeneous classes, and assessment practices emphasizing reading quantity over improvement processes and murajaah habits. Religiopedagogical motivation acted as a lever of change: worship orientation and amanah supported persistence and consistency, rahmah enhanced learning comfort and students’ confidence to read, and competence-development commitment increased openness to improvement. Targeted mentoring strengthened method consistency, feedback quality, murajaah discipline, and student participation. This study operationalizes religio-pedagogical motivation and proposes a scalable, tiered mentoring model for TPQ quality improvement in interdisciplinary teaching contexts.

Abstract

This study focuses on the role of Majelis Taklim Al-Hidayah in Krajan Hamlet, Karanganyar Village, Bantaran District, Probolinggo Regency in shaping and strengthening social harmony within rural communities. The objective is to reveal how the religious and social activities of the Majelis contribute to building strong social bonds amidst the challenges of modernization, characterized by increasing individualism and declining quality of social interaction. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, documentation, and literature review, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Majelis Taklim Al-Hidayah functions not only as a forum for religious learning but also as a space for strengthening social ties through Qur’anic recitation, social gatherings, and mau’izhah hasanah (religious advice). It serves as an intergenerational arena that enhances communication across age groups, social solidarity, and community participation. The active role of women as the main driving force reflects a social transformation rooted in religious values. Strategies such as rotational hosting, consensual decision-making, and collective fund management have proven effective in reinforcing social cohesion and fostering a harmonious collective culture. These findings affirm that Majelis Taklim Al-Hidayah plays a significant role as a socio-religious agent capable of preserving harmony and solidarity in rural communities while enriching the understanding of the socio-religious functions of local Islamic institutions amid the currents of modernization.
