Abstract

This study aims to produce a valid and reliable PISA-based chemistry test instrument on the acid–base concept to measure Madrasah Aliyah students’ scientific literacy. The test instrument was developed using the ADDIE model (analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate). A total of 25 multiple-choice questions were tested on 60 Grade XII students majoring in natural sciences at Madrasah Aliyah in Subang. From the Rasch analysis, a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.71 indicates that the reliability of the test instrument is acceptable. In addition, the person reliability value of 0.67 indicates that the respondents' answers were quite consistent, and the item reliability value of 0.83 indicates that the reliability of the questions was good. All questions were declared valid because they met the outfit MNSQ, outfit ZSTD, and Pt-Measure Correlation criteria. The level of difficulty of the items was distributed into five very easy items, seven easy items, nine difficult items, and four very difficult items. The discriminating power of the items was classified into 24 items in the good category and one item in the sufficient category. In addition, 21 items had well-functioning distractors, while four items had distractors that did not function well.

Abstract

Evaluation of interest-based education programs is an essential component of assessing a program's effectiveness in higher education. However, valid, contextual, and relevant instruments for curriculum development objectives, such as those in chemistry education, remain limited. The purpose of this study was to determine how to (1) design and develop program evaluation instruments based on the Context, Input, Process, Product (CIPP) model, (2) program effectiveness by looking at evaluation results in each aspect of the model, and (3) relevance between evaluation results and the Model structure. The study used an evaluative approach with the CIPP evaluation model as the main framework. The instrument was developed independently and validated by experts with a logical-theoretical-empirical approach, with samples of chemistry education students in the chemistry learning media lecture program. Data were collected using a questionnaire, analysed using a statistical approach, and the evaluation results were reported. The evaluation results show that (1) the designed and developed evaluation instrument meets the valid criteria (0.91 or high validity), (2) this program has high effectiveness with an average score of Context (3.75), Input (3.5), Process (3.0), and Product (3.5), and (3) the evaluation results show relevance to the model structure and can be used effectively. These results confirm that the CIPP model can not only measure program effectiveness, but also identify areas that still need improvement for continuous improvement. CIPP model-based evaluation can be an effective tool for assessing the effectiveness of interest-based lecture programs in higher education.

Abstract

The main challenge in 21st-century chemistry learning lies in the limited availability of assessment instruments that effectively measure students’ critical thinking skills in accordance with deep learning principles, namely meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning. In practice, teachers still predominantly employ conventional assessment methods that do not fully support technology-based learning or the development of higher-order thinking skills. As a preliminary study to support the development of deep learning–based digital assessment, this research aims to explore teachers’ perceptions and needs regarding the implementation of digital assessment in chemistry learning. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving three senior high school chemistry teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that teachers possess a sound pedagogical understanding of deep learning concepts; however, current assessment practices have not yet adequately captured the dimensions of meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning. Teachers expressed positive perceptions toward digital assessment as a means to enhance effectiveness and student engagement, despite challenges related to technological infrastructure and digital literacy. These findings provide an empirical basis for developing deep learning–based digital assessment instruments to strengthen students’ critical thinking skills and improve the quality of chemistry learning.

Abstract

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is a new situation that brings challenges to all sectors, including education. One of the impacts is that there is an adjustment in the implementation of learning, including practicums, which are usually held offline, turning into online learning. In this study, an analysis of the implementation of biochemistry practicum was carried out for two semesters during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study uses a descriptive case study design. Research data obtained from document analysis and questionnaires. There are five classes used as samples of this study. Questionnaires were given to 116 students. The results showed that the implementation of the biochemistry practicum had been carried out well. This is marked by positive responses from students through questionnaires. Even so, there are significant differences in student achievement compared to conditions after the pandemic. This shows that practicum activities, especially those related to laboratory skills, cannot be facilitated with online learning

Abstract

Performance assessment has emerged as an important approach in chemistry education to address the limitations of conventional testing. This study aims to systematically review the implementation of performance-based assessments in chemistry, focusing on instrument typology, educational context, and targeted competencies. Guided by the PRISMA protocol, a comprehensive search was conducted in the Scopus database for peer-reviewed research articles published between 2015 and 2025. Due to the very strict inclusion criteria that focused exclusively on validated chemistry-specific instruments, nine selected articles were synthesized. Results indicate that analytical rubrics remain the most dominant format (67% of reviewed tools), with digital video-based assessments emerging as a recent trend, while 88% of implementations are skewed towards higher education. These authentic tools consistently report positive impacts on students' practical competence and procedural engagement. However, pedagogical challenges remain: current instruments often fail to capture deep conceptual reasoning due to the high cognitive load experienced by students during active tasks. This review concludes that while performance assessments effectively measure technical compliance, global standardization of the Evidence-Centered Design (ECD) framework is urgently needed to address the current fragmentation of instruments and systematically align laboratory evidence with measurable conceptual milestones.
