Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) is an integral part of the education system in many countries with a Muslim majority. To ensure a deep and relevant understanding of religion, effective and contemporary learning methods need to be implemented. An approach gaining attention is heutagogy which promotes independent learning and self-development. This article reviews the concept of heutagogy and its application in the context of PAI learning. Heutagogy teaches students to become independent learners, enabling them to identify their learning needs, plan, initiate, and take full responsibility. This research employs the Systematic Literature Review method, utilizing the Watase Uake tool, EBSCO, Google Scholar, and the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) technique. Initial research results show that the heutagogical approach can increase students’ motivation, promote a better understanding of the Islamic religion, and prepare them to become moral leaders in society. Focusing on the actualization of heutagogy in PAI learning, this article provides a view on the development of more modern Islamic education, relevant, and attractive to the current students. Incorporating heutagogical elements into PAI learning, schools and educators can help students develop a deeper understanding of their religion, as well as prepare them to face the challenge.

Abstract

Death rituals in local Muslim communities are not merely cultural expressions but also potential platforms for transmitting Islamic educational values. This study explores how death traditions among the Sasak Muslim community serve as a medium for informal Islamic education through the integration of cultural and religious elements. Using an ethnographic approach, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with religious and community leaders, and document analysis. The study focuses on identifying and interpreting Islamic values embedded in ritual practices. Findings reveal that key stages of Sasak death rituals—such as bebarak (death announcement), tepong tanak (grave preparation), karang watang (coffin-making), bokos (shroud-cutting), penurut (animal slaughter), and pelangar (ritual food donations)—incorporate Islamic educational values. These include ukhuwah (brotherhood), adab (proper conduct), niyyah (intention), tawakkal (trust in God), and sadaqah (charity). Despite tensions between custom and Islamic jurisprudence, the community maintains a syncretic practice that fosters moral learning. These rituals provide an effective non-formal learning model that contextualizes Islamic teachings through lived experience. The integration of local wisdom with Islamic principles offers a culturally relevant approach to religious education, especially in maintaining community identity and moral development

Abstract

Formative assessment literacy is essential for effective and student-centered instruction, yet limited research explores its application within religious education. This study investigates the level of formative assessment literacy among Islamic Education (PAI) teachers in Lamongan, East Java, focusing on three dimensions: conceptual understanding, practical implementation, and socio-emotional awareness. A descriptive quantitative design was employed, involving 263 PAI teachers from elementary to secondary levels. Data were collected using a validated Likert-scale questionnaire adapted from the Teacher Formative Assessment Literacy Scale (TFALS). Descriptive statistics and linear regression analysis were used to examine literacy levels and the predictive contribution of each dimension. The results show that PAI teachers exhibit high levels of formative assessment literacy across all three dimensions, with mean scores exceeding 5 on a 6-point scale. Regression analysis confirmed that each dimension significantly and independently contributes to teachers’ perceptions of formative assessment. However, interaction effects between dimensions were not significant, indicating limited cross-dimensional integration. These findings suggest that while PAI teachers possess strong individual competencies in assessment, holistic integration remains a challenge. Professional development should therefore address not only technical knowledge but also foster reflective and emotional capacities. Strengthening these areas can support more inclusive, ethical, and responsive assessment practices, particularly in value-based educational contexts such as Islamic education.

Abstract

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is vital for enhancing teaching quality and professional growth. This study compares the implementation and impact of CPD on teaching practices and teacher professionalism in Indonesia and China, highlighting similarities and differences in national strategies. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted using the PRISMA protocol. Relevant literature was sourced from the Scopus database, following four stages: identification, screening, eligibility, and data extraction. From an initial pool of 735 articles, 17 met the inclusion criteria and were selected for in-depth analysis. Findings indicate a shift in Indonesia from traditional CPD models to more formalized systems, particularly through the Program Profesi Guru (PPG), which aims to improve teaching quality and align curricula with student needs. In China, CPD is embedded within national policy, notably through the National Teacher Training Program (NTTP), which emphasizes digital competencies and educational equity. Indonesian CPD initiatives have led to increased teacher motivation and improved instructional practices. In China, CPD efforts have enhanced teacher competence, reduced urban–rural disparities, and strengthened learning outcomes. Both countries have achieved positive outcomes through CPD, though their approaches differ. Indonesia prioritizes certification and curriculum relevance, while China focuses on policy integration and digital skills enhancement. CPD significantly contributes to teaching effectiveness and educational reform. While Indonesia emphasizes structured certification pathways, China’s approach integrates CPD into broader educational policies, underlining its strategic role in national development.

Abstract

School violence, including bullying and sexual violence, poses a significant challenge to the well-being and development of students, particularly in Indonesia. Despite the success of anti-bullying programs like KiVa from Finland in reducing such violence, adapting these programs to the Indonesian context, which is deeply influenced by local cultural and religious values, is crucial for their effectiveness. This study proposes integrating key Islamic values 'adl (justice) and ihsan (empathy) into the KiVa program to create a more inclusive and safe educational environment for Indonesian students. The aim is to address not only the behavior of students but also the underlying societal issues, such as patriarchal norms and social hierarchies, that often fuel sexual violence in schools. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), this research analyzes relevant studies published between 2018 and 2024, focusing on the application of Islamic principles in educational contexts. The findings suggest that integrating 'adl and ihsan enhances KiVa’s effectiveness by fostering fairness, justice, and empathy, which are essential for preventing bullying and sexual violence. The integration of these values ensures a more holistic approach, addressing both the emotional and social aspects of the problem. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by offering a culturally relevant framework that can be adapted to Indonesian schools. Additionally, the study provides policy recommendations to promote teacher training, community engagement, and the inclusion of these values in the school curriculum. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness of this approach in creating safer and more just school environments.

Abstract

Automated Essay Scoring (AES) is a computer-based scoring system that uses appropriate features to automatically assess or give feedback to students, by combining the power of Artificial Intelligence and natural language processing (NLP) to provide convenience and benefits for evaluators. This study aims to analyze the most effective algorithmic models in evaluating the accuracy and reliability of the Automated Essay Scoring (AES) system, especially in the context of Islamic religious education assessment, as well as examine its advantages and disadvantages in supporting objective and efficient learning evaluation. This study uses the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach by following the PRISMA protocol. A total of 31 relevant articles published in the period 2020 to 2025 from the Scopus and Springer databases were analyzed to evaluate the use and effectiveness of algorithms in the development of AES systems. The results show that transformer-based models, specifically BERT, are the most effective algorithms in current AES implementations. BERT excels because of its ability to understand bidirectional context and semantic depth in text. These models generate accurate scores and can provide automated feedback that is close to the quality of human judgment. However, the use of BERT requires large training data and high computing resources. While BERT demands substantial data and computing power, its application in Islamic education highlights the potential of AES to support more objective, consistent, and scalable assessment of students’ essays
