Abstract

Abstract

Community empowerment at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Education Hospital (RSHP) Universitas Airlangga aimed to prevent Covid-19 among students, picket workers, employees, veterinarians, nurses, and the client who bring animals to RSHP. The program starts from observation to implementation in May-October 2020. Implementation of community empowerment program in collaboration with the KKN program in Surabaya. This program introduced the disinfection chamber model of an automatic sprayer that is safe for health and complies with the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the use of the disinfection chamber. The existence of a disinfection chamber at the entrance to the campus and RSHP has contributed a lot to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The post-test results showed an increase in public understanding of the existence of disinfection chamber as a way to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and implement health protocols and healthy lifestyles.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify gastrointestinal parasites in pigs in Bali. A total of 117 pig feces samples were collected in Buleleng Regency (n = 67) and Jembrana (n = 50). Samples were examined microscopically using native, sedimentation, and floating methods. The results reported the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites infecting pigs in Bali was 94.8% (111/117) infected with protozoa, namely Eimeria sp. (90.5%), Entamoeba sp. (26.4%), Isospora suis (6.8%), and Balantidium sp. (5.1%), while 99.1% (116/117) were infected with helminths, namely Trichuris suis (71.7%), Strongyloides sp. (64.9%), Ascaris suum (49.5%), Oesophagostomum sp. (6.1%), Macracanthorhyncus sp. (2.5%), and Hyostrongylus sp. (0.8%). Based on the tree regression analysis reported that the rearing system was related to the degree of gastrointestinal parasite infection in pigs in Bali.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of lactic acid bacteria probiotics on the performance of Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan (KUB) chicken. A total of 48 KUB chickens aged 2 weeks were randomized into 4 treatments and each treatment consisted of 12 chickens. This study was conducted for 8 weeks. This study used 4 different treatments including (P0) not using probiotics, (P1) using probiotics of 1 mL/L drinking water, (P2) using probiotics of 2 mL/L drinking water, and (P3) using probiotics of 3 mL/L drinking water. The data were analyzed using ANOVA continued with Duncan's Multiple distance test. As a result, reported that the data had a significant difference in the increase in feed efficiency and carcass weight. In conclusion, the administration of probiotics of 3 mL/L of drinking water can increase feed efficiency and carcass weight in KUB chickens.

Abstract

Strongylids are a group of worms that infect the digestive tract of horses consisting of Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus equinus, Strongylus edentates and Cyathostomes. There is no reported prevalence data on Strongylids infection in horses in East Java. Study on Strongylids is urgently needed because this worm is one of the causes of zoonotic diseases. This study aimed to identify Strongylids that infect horses morphologically. Identification of Strongylids in this study using morphological methods. A total of 65 horse faeces in East Java, i.e. in the cities of Surabaya, Malang, Kediri and Pasuruan were examined microscopically after being fixed in 10% formalin. Three microscopically positive samples showed a prevalence of 4,6% with an average size of 60-70µm x 50-60µm and larvae developed inside the worm eggs.

Abstract

Coccidiosis caused by Eimeria spp. is a parasitic disease that affects various animal species, including sheep. This study aimed to detect Eimeria spp. and the degree of infection in the fat-tailed sheep breed in Malang. This study used fecal samples from 62 fat-tailed sheep. Detection of Eimeria spp. was performed by using the flotation method and then observed the morphology of the oocysts found in the fecal samples of fat-tailed sheep. The positive sample was followed by the McMaster test to calculate oocysts per gram (OPG). The results showed that 20 (32%) samples were positively infected by Eimeria spp. with the degree of infection in the severe category.

Abstract

Ptyas korros or Indo-China Rat Snake is one of the snakes that are commonly hunted in Indonesia. This study aimed to identify Spirometra sp. on P. korros in Sidoarjo. A total of 18 snakes were collected within 3 months. Identification of Spirometra sp. was done using a native method, Semichen Acetic Carmine, and HE staining. As a results, 8 (44.4%) of 18 samples showed positive infection with Spirometra sp. The results of this study indicate the presence of spargana in P. korros in Sidoarjo and no adult Spirometra sp. was found.

Abstract

Lamongan Regency, located in East Java, Indonesia, is a significant center for beef cattle production. Despite its prominence, studies on the identification and differentiation of Eimeria spp. parasites in this region are notably lacking. This research aims to address this gap by evaluating the prevalence of Eimeria spp. and identifying two pathogenic species: Eimeria bovis and Eimeria zuernii. The study involved the collection of 250 fecal samples from beef cattle raised on smallholder farms across Lamongan. Sampling was conducted during the rainy season to optimize the detection of Eimeria infections. Using the sugar flotation method, Eimeria oocysts were isolated from 5–10 g of fecal matter per sample. Molecular identification employed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays targeting ribosomal RNA’s internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) region to detect the pathogenic species. Fecal examination using the Whitlock test revealed a prevalence of Eimeria spp. at 44.45% (111/250). PCR analysis further identified E. bovis with a 238 bp amplicon in Solokuro District and E. zuernii with a 344 bp amplicon in Tikung District, highlighting the presence of these two pathogenic species in distinct geographic areas. The findings underline the need for further research that includes expanded sampling from different regions and cattle breeds and the application of varied diagnostic methods. Such studies will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the genetic diversity, distribution, and epidemiology of E. bovis and E. zuernii in Indonesia, supporting improved cattle health and management practices in the region.
