Abstract

Indonesia has long been known as a tropical country rich in various local cultivars of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.), including Aceh Lebak (AL), Aceh Pelat (AP), Binjai (B), Gula Batu (GB), and Sikoneng (SK). Due to their phenolic and flavonoid compound, rambutan peel extracts have been reported to exhibit antioxidant and antiproliferative properties. Variation among cultivars suggests potential differences in bioactive compound content and biological activity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and toxicity profiles of five rambutan peel varieties and their correlation with total phenolic compound (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC). The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method, and phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured by colorimetric assays. Toxicity was assessed using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). Bioautography analysis using TLC-DPPH was conducted to identify antioxidant-active compounds. In this study, all rambutan peel extracts indicated the presence of flavonoids, phenolics, saponins, steroids, alkaloids, and triterpenoids. The highest extract yield was observed in Sikoneng, also with the highest TPC and TFC values. The Binjai variety exhibited strong antioxidant activity (IC50 = 4.73 ± 0.19 mg/L) and three active antioxidant spots; however, it also exhibited toxicity (LC50 = 136.27 ± 6.58 mg/L). The correlation between total phenolic or flavonoid content and the observed biological activity was not statistically significant, indicating that additional metabolites or synergistic interactions may also contribute. These findings underscore the significant impact of biodiversity on differences in compound levels and potential biological activities among rambutan peel varieties.

Abstract

Essential oils are often also referred to as flying oils produced by plants and usually volatile essential oils at room temperature, one of the essential oils with many uses is clove leaf essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum L). Zein-essential oil nanoparticles were prepared by varying the concentration of clove oil (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 20 mg/mL) added to 1.5 mg/mL zein and 1 ml tween 20 and sonicated for 20 minutes. The antioxidant activity of the zein-essential oil nanoparticles formed was tested using the DPPH method. The best antioxidant activity was found in the addition of clove leaf essential oil 8 mg/mL with a percentage of inhibition of 71.13%. Characterization test with a laser beam where the amount of light scattered by the solution. Chemical component analysis using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS) showed the presence of 32 compounds with three main compounds, namely trans-?-caryophyllene (46.69%), chavibetol (25.80%) and - humulene (10.84%).

Abstract

The study discovering chemical compounds of black bangle (Zingiber ottensii Val.), which is a member of Zingiberaceae family, is rather scarce. This research aimed to determine the composition of volatile dan non-volatile compounds of the rhizome. The volatile compound was analyzed using solid phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPME GC-MS), while non-volatile compound was determined by Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS). The experiment by SPME GC-MS successfully identified 31 compounds with monoterpenes showing the most abundant group at 54 %. The main volatile compounds are β-Phellandrene, β-pinene, γ-Terpinene and α-pinene, then followed by sesquiterpene and terpene, namely humulene and terpinen-4-ol, respectively. Furthermore, analysis using UHPLC-HRMS detected 37 compounds with some pre dominant compounds, i.e. zerumbone, choline, isoleucine, phenylalanine, afzelin and malic acid. These findings indicate that black bangle rhizome is rich in various volatile and non-volatile compounds, especially terpenoid, flavonoid, amino acid and malic acid, some of which have certain bioactivities.

Abstract

Coptotermes curvignathus is a termite pest that attacks buildings, plantations, and forests. Controlling this pest requires environmentally friendly natural materials. The bintaro plant (Cerbera odollam) are known in Indonesia as natural insecticides and traditional medicines because of their strong toxic properties, so they have the potential to be used in termite control. This study evaluated the efficacy of C. odollam leaf and fruit peel extracts as natural termiticides and their effectiveness against subterranean termite C. curvignathus. The extraction process used three solvents with different polarities: n-hexane, acetone, and ethanol. Anti-termite bioactivity tests were conducted following the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) 1571-2010 method. Ethanol extract from C. odollam leaves produced the highest yield (9.52%). Phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, steroids, and saponins in both leaf and fruit peel extracts. The anti-termite bioactivity test showed that the leaf extract with acetone solvent caused 97.33% mortality, while the fruit peel extract with ethanol solvent caused 100% mortality at a 5% concentration. This study demonstrates that C. odollam leaf and fruit peel extracts have strong potential as natural termiticides.

Abstract

In this study, the optode was fabricated by incorporating 1,5-diphenylcarbazide and the ion carrier Aliquat 336 into a cellulose triacetate polymer matrix, which was subsequently modified using a dual-plasticizer system consisting of oleic acid and acetophenone. The successful synthesis of the optode was justified through FTIR spectroscopy to confirm functional group immobilization and screw micrometer measurements to ensure membrane thickness uniformity. A linear response was obtained within the concentration range of 0.02–0.40 ppm, with a determination coefficient (R²) of 0.9979, a limit of detection of 0.0108 ppm, a limit of quantitation of 0.0328 ppm, precision expressed as a relative standard deviation of 4.458%, and accuracy of 97.51%. The optode demonstrated high analytical sensitivity, as evidenced by a molar absorptivity of 2.262 × 10⁷ M⁻¹ cm⁻¹, along with excellent selectivity against common potentially interfering ions, including Fe(III), Pb(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II). The formed color complex exhibited good stability, remaining unchanged for up to five days. When applied to the determination of Cr(VI) in water samples, the optode yielded a concentration of 0.0664 ppm with satisfactory precision and accuracy. Although this value differed from the concentration obtained using UV–Vis spectrophotometry (0.0881 ppm), the overall performance of the optode was validated. Furthermore, a functional prototype was successfully developed and evaluated using real samples, producing favorable results. Collectively, these outcomes highlight the strong potential for further development and optimization of the proposed system.
