Abstract

Education in Southeast Asian countries continues to evolve in line with the demands of globalization and the need for competitive human resources. Indonesia and the Philippines are two countries that place significant emphasis on developing basic education as a foundation for developing 21st-century competencies. Indonesia is currently implementing the Independent Curriculum, which emphasizes learning flexibility, differentiated learning, and strengthening student character through the Pancasila Student Profile. Meanwhile, the Philippines implements the K-12 curriculum designed to align the national education system with international standards and prepare graduates for continuing their education and entering the workforce. This study aims to analyze and compare the structure of elementary school curricula in Indonesia and the Philippines, including educational objectives, subject structure, learning load, and competency orientation. The method used is a comparative study with a qualitative approach through an analysis of curriculum policy documents in both countries. The results of the study indicate that although both curricula share the same goal of improving the quality of basic education, there are significant differences in the emphasis on curriculum flexibility, learning approaches, and orientation to learning outcomes. These findings are expected to serve as reflection and reference material in the development of elementary education curriculum policies in the Southeast Asian region.

Abstract

Reading is a fundamental skill essential for elementary school students as it serves as the foundation for understanding various subjects. However, many students still experience reading difficulties due to internal and external factors. This study aims to analyze various strategies implemented by teachers to address reading difficulties in elementary school students through a literature review. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a literature review method. Data sources consisted of scientific articles published between 2021 and 2026, obtained from Google Scholar, Garuda, SINTA, and relevant international journals. The data were analyzed using content analysis techniques to identify, categorize, and synthesize the various strategies used by teachers. The results showed that effective strategies included intensive mentoring, gradual reading practice, the use of learning media such as letter cards and visual media, the application of phonics methods, the provision of reading corners, remedial learning, additional study hours, and collaboration with parents. These strategies have been proven to improve students' reading abilities, motivation, and self-confidence. Therefore, implementing strategies tailored to students' needs and supported by collaboration between schools and parents is key to overcoming reading difficulties in elementary schools.

Abstract

Conversational abilities are crucial for young learners in primary school, as they facilitate effective interaction and the sharing of thoughts. Nonetheless, numerous children continue to struggle with speaking confidently and articulating their ideas in a structured manner. This research focused on outlining how the storytelling technique can enhance speaking abilities in Indonesian language instruction. A descriptive qualitative method was utilized, involving a literature review that examined 16 pertinent national journal articles through content analysis. The results indicate that storytelling significantly boosts students' speaking abilities, which encompass fluency, vocabulary knowledge, pronunciation, intonation, self-assurance, and the capacity to convey thoughts logically. The effectiveness of this method is notably augmented when combined with appropriate teaching aids, such as storybooks, hand puppets, picture sequences, animated films, and audiovisual aids. Hence, storytelling is endorsed as a valuable educational approach to enhance the speaking skills of elementary school pupils.
