Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the concept of Birrul Walidain as the basis of interpersonal ethics in Muslim families based on the perspective of Tafsir Ibn Kathir. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework used is based on Islamic ethics, the concept of monotheism, and social values in the Muslim family. Literature review: the literature review includes previous studies on Birrul Walidain from the perspective of interpretation, Literature on Muslim family ethics, and References from classical tafsir especially Tafsir Ibn Kathir, as well as thematic interpretation approaches in Islamic studies. Methods: Using the literature review method with a thematic interpretation approach (maudhui), this study analyzes the verses of the Qur'an that discuss Birrul Walidain as interpreted by Ibn Kathir. Results: The results of the study show that Birrul Walidain is an absolute commandment that is inseparable from monotheism and is the main foundation in shaping social ethics in the family, which is reflected in respect, gentleness in speech, as well as prayers and charity for parents, both during life and after death. Implications: These findings imply the importance of Birrul Walidain as a foundation in shaping the harmony of the family and a civilized Muslim society. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its thematic approach to Ibn Kathir's classical interpretation in linking the values of monotheism with family ethics, as well as the emphasis on the spiritual and social dimensions of obedience to parents in the context of family life.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to criticize the interpretation of the phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in the scientific work of students of Qur'an and Tafsir in Indonesia, focusing on the suitability of the interpretation method used, the relevance of the verses of the Qur'an as a solution, and the contribution of interpretation to the challenges of modern digital life. Theoretical framework: This study departs from the understanding that the FoMO phenomenon is not only a psychological problem, but can also be studied through a spiritual-religious approach in the Qur'an, so it is necessary to have an interpretive framework that can respond to contemporary issues. Literature review: This study highlights the limitations of the literature linking psychological phenomena such as FoMO with the study of interpretation, as well as the importance of a cross-disciplinary approach in presenting solutions based on Qur'anic values to modern digital issues. Method: This study uses a content analysis method on various scientific works that have been published by students, especially those who try to interpret FoMO through the Qur'an interpretation approach. Results: show that despite attempts to link FoMO to the teachings of the Qur'an, most scientific works have not fully succeeded in selecting relevant verses and understanding the social context of the phenomenon in depth. Implications: from these findings is the importance of updating the approach in the study of interpretation, by integrating psychological and sociological perspectives to produce a more contextual and applicative interpretation. Novelty: lies in his attempt to criticize and recommend a multidisciplinary approach to the interpretation of the Qur'an to modern psychological phenomena, thus opening up space for the development of interpretive studies that are more relevant to the realities of contemporary life.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to explore the concept of religious tolerance in Buya Hamka's Tafsir Al-Azhar and compare it with the interpretations of other classical and contemporary mufasir such as Ibn Kathir, Al-Maraghi, Wahbah al-Zuhaili, and M. Quraish Shihab, to reaffirm the Qur'an's instructions on peaceful interreligious relations in a pluralistic society, especially in Indonesia. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework used involves a thematic and contextual interpretation approach to the Qur'an, paying attention to aspects of religious freedom, social coexistence, and multiculturalism values. Literature review: A literature review involves an analysis of classical and contemporary works of interpretation, as well as literature that discusses thematic interpretations and issues of religious diversity. Methods: The method applied in this study is a qualitative-descriptive method with a literature study approach and content analysis of six verses of the Qur'an related to religious tolerance (QS. Al-Baqarah: 256, Al-Kafirun: 1–6, Yunus: 40–41, Yunus: 99–100, Mumtahanah: 8–9, and Al-Maidah: 5). Results: The results of the study show that Hamka prioritizes a contextual and responsive interpretation approach to social reality, different from the more textual and theological interpretations of some other scholars. Hamka and Quraish Shihab's interpretations stand out for being inclusive and dialogical, demonstrating Islam's compatibility with the values of democracy and multiculturalism. Implications: Implications of these findings include the importance of a social interpretation approach in building inclusive education, developing tolerant policies, and encouraging interfaith dialogue. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its contribution to the development of thematic and contextual interpretive methods to respond to contemporary challenges, as well as in showing that socially oriented interpretive approaches can be the foundation for harmony in a pluralistic society.

Abstract

Objective:  This study aims to explore the implementation of tahfidz and tahsin programs at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta, as well as identify strategies to improve the quality of memorization and recitation of the Qur'an through the optimization of dormitory facilities and the implementation of Saturday Islamic Boarding School activities (Pesat). Theoretical framework: This research is based on Qur'anic learning theory that emphasizes the integration of tahsin and tahfidz as part of Islamic character education, as well as kinesthetic and repetitive approaches such as talaqqi, tikrār, and muroja'ah to support successful memorization. Literature review:  The literature review covers the urgency of tahfidz and tahsin in Islamic education, the effectiveness of methods such as talaqqi and tasmi', the role of curriculum and facilities, and the importance of tahsin as a basis for correct memorization. The literature also discusses common reading errors and their corrective strategies. Methods:   The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a field study method. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation, which are analyzed interactively through reduction, presentation, and conclusions drawn. The validity of the data was tested by triangulation and member check. Result:  The results of the study show that the tahfidz and tahsin programs at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta have great potential but have not been fully optimized. Two flagship programs were developed, namely the boarding school dormitory program and Pesat (Saturday Islamic Boarding School), which aims to improve the quality and quantity of memorization. It was also found that some students did not have the correct reading skills, so they needed to learn first before entering the tahfidz stage. Implications:  This study shows the need for collaboration between schools, teachers, and policymakers in designing the tahfidz-tahsin curriculum and optimizing dormitory facilities to support intensive Qur'an learning. Novelty:  This study presents a school-based Qur'an coaching model with the integration of tahsin as a prerequisite for tahfidz, utilizing the boarding system and the Pesat program as effective learning innovations.

Abstract

Objective: This research aims to explore the core meaning, semantic relationships, and conceptual scope of al-Thahur (purity) in the Qur’an, encompassing both physical and spiritual dimensions. Theoretical framework: This study adopts the semantic approach of Toshihiko Izutsu to analyze the concept of al-Thahur in the Qur'an, focusing on the relationships between words and their meanings in the sacred text. Literature review: Previous studies have explored the concept of purity in Islam, often focusing on physical purity through ritual acts such as ablution and purification from impurity. However, fewer studies have investigated the spiritual dimensions of al-Thahur, which includes purification from sin, disbelief, and immoral traits. This research aims to fill this gap by examining both the physical and spiritual aspects of purity as presented in the Qur'an. Methods: A semantic analysis approach is employed, involving the collection of verses that mention the term al-Thahur. The analysis covers the context of these verses, syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships, and interpretation based on classical and contemporary tafsir literature, as well as linguistic references. Results: The study finds that al-Thahur in the Qur’an extends beyond physical purity, such as cleansing from hadas and najis, to include spiritual purity, such as the purification of the soul from sin, polytheism, and immoral behavior. The concept is used in various contexts, including self-purification through worship, cleansing the heart from doubts, and the purification of faith. Implications: This research highlights the holistic nature of purity in Islam, linking physical cleanliness with moral and spiritual integrity. The findings underscore the importance of al-Thahur as a foundational concept in Islamic teachings, guiding not only ritualistic practices but also personal morality and spirituality. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in its comprehensive analysis of al-Thahur from both physical and spiritual perspectives, using a semantic approach to uncover deeper insights into the Qur'anic concept of purity. This research bridges the gap between physical cleanliness and spiritual integrity in the understanding of purity within Islamic teachings.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to understand how Indonesian mufassirs interpret eschatological verses in the Qur'an, specifically regarding life after death, the apocalypse, and resurrection, and how these interpretations influence morality and behavior in the Indonesian context. Theoretical framework: The study is grounded in eschatology, focusing on the Islamic concepts of the afterlife and resurrection. It explores how different mufassirs interpret these themes and how their views affect Muslim beliefs and practices. Literature review: The literature review examines prior studies on Islamic eschatology and tafsir, highlighting the diversity of mufassir interpretations on eschatological verses. It also discusses the role of cultural and theological contexts in shaping these interpretations, with a focus on Indonesian perspectives. Methods: This research uses library research, analyzing books, tafsir texts, and related articles to compare the views of Indonesian mufassirs on eschatological themes, identifying key differences in their interpretations. Results: The study finds differing views among Indonesian mufassirs, such as Agus Mustofa’s belief that the afterlife is not eternal, and KH. Taufiqul Hakim’s affirmation of bodily resurrection reflects varied interpretations within the Indonesian context. Implications: The findings suggest the need for a more contextual approach in interpreting eschatological verses to avoid narrow or rigid readings and promote a deeper understanding of Islamic teachings in Indonesia. Novelty: This study offers a fresh perspective on Indonesian mufassirs’ views on eschatology, contributing new insights into Qur'anic interpretation within the Indonesian Islamic community.

Abstract

The conceptual crisis in modern education, which tends to view human beings in a reductionistic way, is limited to the rational and social dimensions, while the spiritual and transcendental aspects are ignored. The purpose of this study is to examine the nature of the human self in the perspective of the Qur'an by tracing the conceptual structure of nafs, qalb, 'aql, and rūḥ, and analyzing their implications for the philosophy of Islamic educational anthropology through a critical comparison with the theories of self-consciousness. The method used is a literature-based qualitative approach with philosophical-hermeneutic analysis and conceptual analysis. The results of the study show that the Qur'an views humans as multidimensional entities that unite rationality, morality, and spirituality in a relational awareness of God. This ontological concept of the Qur'an gave birth to the paradigm of the transcendental personality, the human self who is morally free but spiritually submissive to Divine values. Its philosophical implications for Islamic education are the need to build an integrated self-oriented humanistic-transcendental educational, through the processes of ta'aqqul (intellectual development), ta'dīb (moral formation), and tazkiyah (purification of the soul), in order to produce insān kāmil, a whole human being who is knowledgeable, civilized, and divinely aware.
