Abstract

Global environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and ecosystem degradation require urgent responses, and education plays a strategic role in building environmental literacy. This study aimed to evaluate the readiness of higher education curricula in supporting sustainable learning in Environmental Chemistry courses and their alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research used a descriptive approach involving curriculum and lesson plan analysis, student surveys, and interviews with lecturers and program heads at a state university in Aceh Province, Indonesia. The findings show that while the curriculum includes relevant topics such as pollution and climate change, the integration of emerging issues and practical learning methods remains limited. Students demonstrated positive attitudes and awareness toward environmental sustainability, but their active involvement in practical actions was still low. Recommendations include the explicit integration of SDGs in course plans, diversification of teaching strategies through fieldwork and case studies, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Overall, the study concludes that the curriculum provides a strong foundation but requires strategic improvements to enhance its relevance and impact. Aligning academic programs with global and local environmental challenges will enable higher education to prepare students as proactive agents of sustainable development.

Abstract

Education plays a strategic role in shaping cultural behavior and developing human resources. Integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into biology learning offers a promising strategy to enhance students’ sustainability awareness. This study aims to examine the achievement of key ESD competencies and identify students’ levels of sustainability awareness in the context of ESD-based biology instruction. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed in a public senior high school in Bandung during the second semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. Research participants included a biology teacher and eleventh-grade students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and document analysis of teaching modules and student worksheets. Thematic analysis was used to identify ESD-related competencies and expressions of sustainability awareness. The results indicate that integrating Problem-Based Learning (PBL) into biology lessons supports the development of ESD competencies, particularly systems thinking and self-reflection. However, the assessments embedded in the worksheets remain limited to lower-order cognitive levels and do not adequately stimulate higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). Students’ sustainability awareness was most prominent in environmental aspects, followed by social dimensions, while economic awareness remained underdeveloped. These findings highlight the need to strengthen ESD-based content and assessment strategies that encourage students’ active engagement with real-world sustainability issues.

Abstract

This study addresses the need to improve students’ cognitive and communication skills in science learning, particularly in understanding ecosystem interactions. In Indonesia, these competencies remain low due to limited student-centered learning strategies. This research aimed to examine the impact of AI-assisted role play as an innovative instructional approach to enhance these skills. A quasi-experimental design with a control group pretest-posttest was applied. The study was conducted in one junior high school in Cimahi on May 5, 2025, involving 22 seventh-grade students in an experimental class. The treatment involved AI-generated role play scenarios to simulate ecological interactions. Data were collected using cognitive achievement tests and communication skill rubrics. The analysis used paired and independent sample t-tests. The results revealed a significant improvement in students’ posttest scores, indicating enhanced conceptual understanding of ecosystem components and ecological relationships. Moreover, students showed improvement in oral communication, collaboration, and scientific reasoning. However, the cognitive improvement was not highly significant, likely due to the limited learning duration and stronger emphasis on affective and social aspects during role play. These findings suggest that AI-assisted role play can support contextual and engaging science learning, particularly in developing communication competence. The study concludes that integrating interactive AI tools within science classrooms holds promise for enhancing scientific literacy in line with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

Lecture analysis in the core courses of the study program contributes to the evaluation of the curriculum used. This field study was carried out to analyze Quantum Physics lectures from the perspective of a university curriculum based on Independent Learning Campus (MBKM) and Outcome-Based Education (OBE). Data collection techniques were carried out through observing the implementation of learning in the Quantum Physics course, interviews with lecturers teaching quantum physics courses, and reviewing curriculum tools in the form of curriculum books, semester lecture plans (RPS), and assessment documents. The instruments used refer to content standards, process standards and learning assessment standards listed in Permendikbud Number 3 of 2020, Permendikbudristek Number 56 of 2022, and Permendikbudristek Number 53 of 2023. The participants involved in this research were a lecturer and 29 students of the undergraduate physics education study program at one of the universities in Garut Regency. The lecturer in question is a lecturer who teaches quantum physics courses, while the students in question are final year students who are taking quantum physics courses in the odd semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. Data collection was carried out over the period October – November 2024. Data analysis was carried out qualitatively using a data triangulation approach. The results of data analysis show that in the Bachelor of Physics Education curriculum, the Quantum Physics course is in the group of upper-level compulsory courses with physics concept study material. From an MBKM perspective, this course can be converted to Program Pertukaran Mahasiswa (PMM) and Program Magang dan Studi Independen Bersertifikat (MSIB), but cannot be converted to the Teaching Campus Program. Conversion to the PMM program is carried out by taking courses in other study programs that have course learning outcomes that are related to quantum physics. Conversions to the MSIB program are carried out at companies or agencies related to the application of quantum physics concepts. From an OBE perspective, this course contributes to graduate learning outcomes in Specific Skills and supports the graduate's profile as a Physics Teacher. The special skill in question is being able to apply mathematical models in explaining physical phenomena in learning.

Abstract

This study aims to observe and reveal the process of planning and implementation of the Electricity and Magnetism course program from the perspective of the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum in higher education. The participants involved in this study were one lecturer and 29 students of the Natural Science Education study program at one of the state universities in Pekanbaru City, Riau. Data collection was conducted in the period of April - May 2024. Data collection techniques were carried out through observations of learning implementation and interviews with lecturers in the Electricity and Magnetism course program as well as document analysis of the Semester Learning Plan (SLP) and practice questions. The results of data analysis show that administratively the course planning in the form of SLP has met the rules of the OBE approach. However, in reality, the strategies of lectures, discussions, and practice questions used in class are not enough to support the expected CLO. In the Science Education undergraduate curriculum, Electricity and Magnetism courses are included in the intermediate-level study program course group. In conclusion, although the Semester Learning Plan (SLP) document shows compliance with the OBE approach, the teaching strategies including lectures, discussions, and practice problems-have not fully supported the achievement of the expected CLO.
