Abstract

Scientific literacy is a foundational competency for addressing the 21st century challenges, especially in the context of transition to low-carbon energy systems. Sadly, there is very little curriculum coverage of sustainability and energy topica; teachers are mostly unprepared; and there are almost no good-quality local instructional materials. Therefore, this study looks into the effectiveness of an ESD-based e-module on low carbon energy topic in promoting scientific literacy among ninth-grade students in Cimahi, Indonesia. Using a quasi-experimental one-group pretes-posttest design, 28 students took part in learning activities that integrated systems thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving competencies. Scientific literacy was measured using a validated 25-item test covering competencies of explaining phenomena scientifically, scientific inquiry, and scientific data interpretation. Results showed that there was a significant increase in mean scientific literacy scores from pretest (64.75) to posttest (80.57); the moderate average N-gain was 0.45. The highest improvement was found in students' ability to seek, evaluate, and use scientific information in decision-making. The statistical analysis used confirmed that the increases were significant. The results suggest that ESD-based e-modules have the potential to bridge educational gaps by making very complex sustainability concepts simpler and fostering critical scientific competencies.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited empirical evidence regarding chemistry teachers’ creative thinking performance in Indonesia. To fill this gap, the present research aims to explore the creative thinking ability profile of senior high school chemistry teachers. This quantitative descriptive study employed an exploratory design and included 21 chemistry teachers from various provinces in Indonesia. Data were collected using a validated creative thinking questionnaire consisting of four indicators: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. The results indicated that 66.67% of teachers were in the “Very Good” category, 28.57% in the “Good” category, and only 4.76% in the “Fair” category. Among the indicators, fluency showed the highest average score (91.23%), followed by elaboration (86.67%), flexibility (84.95%), and originality (80.38%). These findings indicate that chemistry teachers demonstrate strong abilities in generating and elaborating ideas. At the same time, originality remains comparatively lower due to systemic constraints such as inflexible education policies and limited pedagogical autonomy. The study also highlights the importance of institutional support, training programs, and collaborative learning environments that promote pedagogical creativity among teachers. Enhancing originality, in particular, requires schools to provide more autonomy and flexibility in instructional planning. Ultimately, the results of this study can serve as a reference for educational policymakers and curriculum developers in designing teacher development programs that not only improve content delivery but also cultivate innovative teaching mindsets, essential for meeting the demands of 21st-century learning.

Abstract

This study reviewed 41 articles published between 2016 and 2025 that addressed the implementation of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) in science education. While several previous studies have discussed inquiry learning models and their relevance to various science disciplines, few have systematically examined the variation of IBL syntax across models and how its implementation aligns with educational contexts and developmental levels. The purpose of this study is to map and analyze the use of IBL syntax across models, learning environments, educational levels, and technology integration, thereby providing a clearer framework for teachers and curriculum developers. This study employed a systematic literature review method. Article characteristics were described based on year of publication, publication type, research method, country of origin, educational level, and scientific content. The analysis revealed that IBL syntax varies depending on context, learning model, educational level, and technology use. In elementary school settings, inquiry activities generally focus on initial engagement, observation, and simple exploration. At the secondary school level, IBL emphasizes more complex investigative skills, data analysis, and interpretation. In secondary and higher education, syntax often encompasses elaboration, evaluation, reflection, collaboration, and technology-supported activities such as virtual laboratories, simulations, or project-based investigations. Based on these findings, a practical typology of IBL syntax is proposed that organizes instructional steps by frequency of use, learning objectives, and alignment with students' developmental stages. This typology can serve as a methodological framework to guide teachers and curriculum developers in adapting IBL models to classroom contexts and student characteristics. This study provides theoretical insights and practical guidance for designing structured and context-sensitive inquiry activities. Future research is recommended to explore underutilized syntax, validate the proposed typology in classroom settings, and examine strategies to support teacher readiness and resource availability, thereby encouraging a more systematic and context-appropriate implementation of inquiry-based learning in science education. Keywords: systematic literature review, science education, learning syntax, and inquiry-based learning.
