Abstract

English as the Medium of instruction (MOI) in Indonesia has experienced up and down periods, thus affecting the teachers’ use of code-switching and code-mixing strategies. This article reports on English teachers’ perceived usefulness of English as the Medium of Instruction (MOI) in classrooms. Participants of the study are English teachers from various school levels in one province in Eastern Indonesia. This exploratory case study used a self-assessment survey as the single instrument. As a result, teachers have a positive perception toward English as the Medium of Instruction (MOI) as they believe it could improve students’ proficiency. However, some are hesitant and would rather have classes taught in a blend of their native language and English. This study implies that teachers should consider elements of high-quality instructions. This study suggests developing an institutional ELT policy to infuse MOI into classroom pedagogy.

Abstract

This study attempts to quantify the washback effect of the intense TOEFL training program in order to inspire students' learning through improved test scores. The TOEFL results can then be used for academics objectives and faculty requirements. The study was experimental and included a paired-sample t-test and qualitative descriptive design through interviews (a mixed method). Forty (40) students were chosen from any of the departments at IAIN Parepare to participate, and this was done through pretest, treatments, and posttest. The pre-test and post-test employed in the research procedure were both used to determine the students' beginning scores as well as their final scores. The paired-sample t-test in SPSS is then used to assess the data gathered from the pre-test and post-test. The participants are questioned based on the program's experiences in order to acquire information about the students' learning motivation. The outcome revealed that there were sizable variations between the pre-test and post-test scores of the students. It was evident that participants' total TOEFL scores had improved as a result of the intense training. Also, the data from interview illustrated that the students were well-motivated during the training program. This program can enable the participants to have good self-study, nice self-learning preparation, and more desirably confident to learn English or TOEFL.

The subject of this research was seven-grade students of SMPN 4 Patampanua which consisted of 30 students who were taken by using simple random sampling. The instruments in collecting the data were a questionnaire and a test. The data obtained through the questionnaire was to see students’ learning styles and data from the test was to see students’ vocabulary scores. The research used SPSS to get appropriate data. Based on the research findings, the result showed F-value (F˳) is lower than F-table (Ft), (F˳ < F table). Further, the p-value is greater than alpha (ɑ), (p-value > 0.05). As a result, H˳ is accepted if F-value (F˳) < F-table (Ft) and probability significant (sig.) value > 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is no significant difference in students’ vocabulary mastery based on their learning styles.

Abstract

Collaborative learning (CL) is relatively a novel approach applied in teaching speaking at the context of English as a foreign language (EFL). Statistically, even if CL has widely been investigated in the field of language teaching, it is still rarely found articles discussing CL issues related to social-psychological perspective. Therefore, this study has the purpose of investigating the variables that influence and are encountered by the student's speaking abilities during cooperation. Five students were used in the research in order to conduct an interview. They were deliberately chosen from their peers because they spoke English the best. Information was acquired through an online interview via the use of the WhatsApp calling app. Additionally, the ATLAS.ti application was used to evaluate the collected data. The results showed that 25 sub-dimensions and three major dimensions: social cognition, relationships, and social behavior significantly affected students' speaking abilities in EFL. The curriculum creator is advised to include social psychology into the English language instruction curriculum nevertheless. It suggests a classroom experiment with planned and unplanned speaking performances for further research.

Abstract

One of the essential abilities in learning English is speaking. However, most students believe that speaking English is challenging because they lack vocabulary and are reluctant to express their opinions. Anxiety is a mood that includes fear, hesitation, and worry about events both in the present and the future. This research aimed to find out the factors causing students’ speaking anxiety, the effects of students’ speaking anxiety, and the students’ strategies to reduce their speaking anxiety. The researchers applied a qualitative research design and used observations and interviews. The population of this study was 90 students in the first grade at SMAN 13 Pangkep Regency, and nine students interviewed by the researchers. The results show that two elements contributed to students’ speaking anxiety: linguistic issues (poor pronunciation, vocabulary, and ideas) and non-linguistic issues (lack of self- confidence, lack of preparation, shyness to their peers, and afraid of being laughed at). Speaking anxiety has two different effects on students’ speaking abilities: a facilitating influence that encourages them to talk and a debilitating effect that causes them to stutter, blank out, become afraid, or stumble. The students' use of preparation, avoidance of eye contact, and peer assistance helps them to reduce their speaking anxiety.
