Abstract

This study discussed the psychological conflict experienced by the main character in the novel “The Loneliest Girl in the Universe” by Lauren James. In this study, the researchers examine the forms and the factors of psychological conflict of the main character in the novel, namely Romy Silvers and J Shoreditch. In researching the forms of psychological conflict, the researchers use the theory of Kurt Lewin (1935) and for the factors; the researchers use the theory of needs by Abraham Maslow (1943). Descriptive qualitative methods were used in this research, in which the researchers read the novel, observed, and analyzed the data. The researchers found that the main character experiences psychological conflict with the types of approach-approach conflict, approach-avoidance conflict, avoidance-avoidance conflict, and multiple approach-avoidance conflicts. Besides that, most of the psychological conflicts experienced by the two main characters in this novel are caused by basic needs.

Abstract

Abstract

Environmental education (EE) is one of the content-based language learning pedagogies used to enhance students’ awareness of environmental concerns and their effect on people and animals. It aims to build the language teachers’ and students’ awareness of the importance of EE and green pedagogy in ELT. However, research into integrating EE in language education is still scarce. Therefore, this article presents an analysis of multimodal discourse of the EE imperatives in using content and language integrated learning (CLIL) strategy. Grounded in the video data analysis (VDA) approach, the researchers analysed the recorded talks of two university lecturers who offered their finest teaching approaches, and two environmentalists from “Bye-Bye Plastic Bags Jakarta” who described their significant efforts in handling plastic waste from a 2021 webinar held by the British Council Indonesia. Based on the thematic analysis, the forum suggests: 1) including environmental issues in language curriculum, syllabus, and textbook development, 2) providing environmentally-relevant materials and resources, 3) providing environmental language teacher professional development, and 4) accelerating environmental literacy programs at all levels of education. In other words, the inclusion of green pedagogy and environmental sustainability initiatives in ELT should be well-acknowledged. The methodological and pedagogical strategies in integrating environmental issues in ELT in this study addressed the high demand to catalyse language teachers’ metacognitive awareness in EE and indirectly build students’ metacognitive skills about environmental care.

Abstract

Despite the flipped learning growing popularity, empirical research to increase students' reading abilities is still lacking. The majority of research concentrates on students' impressions of the English language rather than particular language abilities. If there is, speaking, listening, and writing is dominant. This systematic literature review summarizes study findings on trends and outcomes of flipped learning-based instruction in teaching reading. The identification, screening, feasibility, and inclusion phase found thirty-one articles between 2015 and 2022 from the Scopus database with a premium Scopus account to access all sources without limits. The results showed that the research trend of flipped learning in teaching reading was less attractive to researchers than other English skills. It can be seen from the lack of publications from year to year and even tends to decline until May 2022. Further research on flipped learning in teaching reading can enrich the literature on knowledge. In addition, Flipped Learning has positive outcomes in influencing students' performance, especially if combined with other methods. For future research, several different research scopes can be considered, such as creating models or designs to apply flipped learning to students' reading performance and comprehension.

Abstract

Research into self-efficacy has received widespread recognition in the literature. However, little study has been done on students’ self-efficacy in asynchronous online academic interactions. This study examined graduate students’ self-efficacy in regulating their online interaction strategies. Grounded in the Asynchronous Online Self-Regulated Learning Inventory (AOSRLI), the study employed a virtual case study using an online self-assessment survey and focus group interview. Seventy-eight English education master students from two universities were approached and agreed to participate in the study. As a result, the study highlighted several critical findings: 1) lack of confidence in online interaction with the professors, 2) closed-mindedness to criticism, 3) self-fanaticism, and 4) the need for self-dialoguing and self-navigation. The students were commonly inactive, indifferent, and demotivated in their asynchronous online interactions, thus creating ineffective learning communication among them. Self-regulated learning cannot grow alone and rely on the students’ in-person learning initiatives, whereas they need pedagogical imperatives to scaffold their questioning, responding, and critiquing skills. The study suggests improving teachers’ scaffolding strategies and building students’ online community of practice to promote their activeness, engagement, and participation. The implication of this study calls for the inclusion of asynchronous virtual interaction skills into online learning pedagogy and CALL teacher education.

Abstract

People’s social background and empirical knowledge firmly determine their metaphors (Lakoff & Johnsen, 2003: Kovecses, 2010). Since in general men and women have different social experiences and views of life, it is highly assumed that metaphors are strongly influenced by gender. This article explores how gender influences lecturers’ metaphorical talks in Indonesian university EFL classrooms and how the figurative talks contribute towards the classroom learning process. It goes over findings of a case study undertaken at a university in Makassar, Indonesia. The findings reveal that the female lecturer’s metaphorical talks are more complex than the male lecturer’s, implying that the female has more critical thinking. In general, the metaphorical talks given by both sides contribute towards the knowledge acquisition process in the classrooms in that they lead the students to understand the lecturers’ certain ideas.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal student’s perceptions through narrative inquiry when learning English through YouTube. Previous studies insisted that learners have made several attempts to foster their English language, both via teacher-guided and self-directed study, in recognition of the advantages of speaking as a foreign language. Exploring learners' accounts of their self-directed learning in EFL speaking class using YouTube is the focus of the present research. Online interviews were conducted with four students as the research participants. In this line, the research presented three narratives—behavior-oriented, instructional, and evaluation—to describe students' motivations for completing SDL. Aside from the primary important elements influencing students' SDL with respect to their perspective, the study is aware of several limitations, including the sample size and research design. We urge more research on classroom participation studies in light of this. We anticipate that this study will contribute to the conversation on developing SDL curricula.
