Abstract

This study explores how the kiai at Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Mashduqiah integrates spiritual leadership with strategic management practices to maintain pesantren identity while adapting to modernization and digital transformation. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 12 key informants, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings highlight four key themes: first, the kiai upholds organizational culture through sufistic values like sincerity and discipline; second, strategic planning is participatory, involving senior teachers and administrative staff; third, selective adoption of digital innovations, such as e-learning modules and online monitoring, enhances efficiency while preserving cultural authenticity; and fourth, the kiai's dual role as both spiritual guide and manager fosters an adaptive, cohesive organizational climate. The study offers insights into value-based strategic leadership in Islamic education and provides practical recommendations for improving governance and digital integration in pesantren.

Abstract

This study reconceptualises student-centred leadership in Southeast Asian schools by a systematic synthesis of empirical evidence on leadership practices, mediating mechanisms, and student outcomes. Although student-centred leadership has gained policy attention in response to learning inequities, student disengagement, and socio-emotional challenges, research in Southeast Asia remains fragmented across leadership typologies and reform agendas. Guided by the PRISMA framework, this study conducted a systematic literature review of empirical journal articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science. Database searches conducted in January 2026 identified 2,338 records. Following rigorous screening and eligibility procedures based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 32 studies published between 2010 and 2025 were included in the qualitative synthesis. Data were analysed using integrative thematic synthesis. The findings indicate that student-centred leadership is not a singular model. Instead, it constitutes a multidimensional constellation of practices encompassing instructional alignment, relational trust-building, ethical climate formation, pedagogical innovation, and sustained teacher professional development. Leadership influence on students is predominantly indirect and operates through mediating mechanisms such as teaching quality, professional learning structures, school climate, and curriculum enactment. These practices are consistently associated with improved student engagement, wellbeing, agency, autonomy, and learning outcomes. However, implementation is frequently constrained by hierarchical governance structures, accountability pressures, uneven teacher readiness, and digital inequality. This study advances a mechanism-based and contextually grounded reconceptualisation of student-centred leadership in Southeast Asia. It strengthens leadership scholarship by foregrounding mediating pathways and decentring Western-dominated typologies, while offering practical and policy implications for leadership preparation, reform alignment, and equity-oriented school improvement.

Abstract

This study aims to examine teachers’ strategies in promoting religious moderation in Islamic primary education at MI Nurul Huda Bondowoso. Religious moderation is a crucial issue in Islamic education to cultivate balanced, tolerant, and non-extreme attitudes from an early age. This research employed a qualitative case study design involving Islamic Religious Education teachers and classroom teachers selected purposively. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and classroom observations and analyzed using thematic analysis, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that teachers generally understand religious moderation as a balanced (wasatiyyah), tolerant, and respectful attitude. Strategies used include integrating moderation values into lesson content, applying storytelling based on prophetic role models, demonstrating moderate behavior, and fostering respectful classroom communication. These practices contribute to a positive classroom climate characterized by mutual respect and constructive conflict management. However, the implementation of dialogical and student-centered learning remains inconsistent. This study implies the need to strengthen teachers’ conceptual understanding and pedagogical competence, particularly in dialogical learning approaches. Additionally, institutional support through systematic training and clear pedagogical guidelines is essential to ensure consistent and effective implementation of religious moderation in Islamic primary education.

Abstract

Ciri-ciri pemimpin fasilitatif yaitu; 1) An Expectation of Improvement Replaces Cynicism and Frustration, 2) Power Is Shared, Not Granted, 3) The Goal Is Not Democracy, but Improvement. Pemimpin fasilitatif selalu bersikap optimis, menghargai orang lain, dan berorentasi kepada perubahan.

Abstract

This study aims to identify learning needs for developing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered interactive learning media in Islamic Cultural History (SKI) learning at a primary madrasah. This research employed a qualitative case study approach conducted at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Darul Ulum Pondok Wuluh, Probolinggo. The participants consisted of 20 sixth-grade students, one SKI teacher, and one madrasah head, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that SKI learning is predominantly conducted through conventional lecture-based methods, resulting in low student engagement. Most students (approximately 80%) expressed a preference for visual, interactive, and game-based learning media, while also reporting feelings of boredom when learning relied solely on textbooks and verbal explanations. The teacher and school leader demonstrated a positive attitude toward integrating digital technology, although limitations in technological skills and infrastructure were identified. The needs analysis indicates that AI-powered learning media should incorporate adaptive feedback, dynamic visualization, interactive features, and integration of Islamic moral values to support both cognitive and affective learning. These findings imply that the development of AI-based interactive media should be designed not only to align with students’ learning preferences but also to support teachers’ instructional practices and maintain the moral orientation of Islamic education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the transformation of Islamic education management based on integrative governance in the digital era. The study focuses on three main aspects: strengthening integrative governance and leadership, digitalizing management and learning systems, and developing quality assurance, curriculum, and Islamic character. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis, and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the transformation of Islamic education management takes place through the strengthening of participatory leadership, the use of digital technology in administration and learning, and the development of a curriculum that integrates Islamic values, digital literacy, and contemporary educational needs. However, the transformation still faces several challenges, including limited human resource competence, uneven technology utilization, weak data integration in decision-making, and the suboptimal implementation of quality assurance systems based on Islamic character. This study concludes that the transformation of Islamic education management cannot be achieved merely through technical digitalization; rather, it requires integrative governance that continuously connects leadership, technology, quality assurance, curriculum, and Islamic values. These findings contribute to the development of Islamic education management studies, particularly in formulating adaptive, participatory, and contextually relevant governance models for the digital era.

Abstract

This study explores how deep learning can be integrated with a love-based curriculum to enhance meaningful learning in Islamic primary education. Although scholars have widely discussed deep learning as a student-centered approach and linked love-based education to character and relational development, limited empirical research has explored how schools combine these two educational approaches to promote meaningful learning. Using a qualitative case study design, the researchers conducted the study at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 3 Jember, Indonesia. They collected data through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving the school principal, teachers, students, and parents. The researchers analyzed the data using an interactive model consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that integrating deep learning with a love-based curriculum fostered more active participation, deeper contextual understanding, reflective thinking, and collaborative meaning-making among students. At the same time, the values of empathy, care, respect, and emotional support fostered a safe, positive classroom climate that strengthened students' motivation, confidence, and social interaction. Instructional leadership, teacher collaboration, and parental involvement supported the implementation of this approach. This study contributes to the development of an integrative pedagogical framework that connects cognitive engagement with affective and relational values in Islamic primary education. The findings suggest that caring relationships and value-oriented classroom practices can strengthen meaningful learning when they support student-centered pedagogy.
