Abstract

This research aims to examine the phenomenon of escapism at Bira Beach, South Sulawesi, with the aim of understanding the complex interactions between night entertainment workers, tourists and local communities in a tourism context. By adopting a constructivist and interpretative paradigm, this study uses qualitative methods including direct observation and in-depth interviews to collect data. This approach allows research to gain a comprehensive understanding of how the social and cultural reality at Bira Beach is constructed and handled through the practice of escapism. The research results show that escapism at Bira Beach acts as a mechanism of adaptation and resistance to social norms and economic pressures, while influencing social structure and local identity. This phenomenon is analyzed through the lens of relevant sociological theories: Pierre Bourdieu with the concept of "habitus" which explains how social structures and external conditions shape individual perceptions and actions; Erving Goffman with his dramaturgical theory which allows an understanding of how individuals play various social roles as a form of escapism; and Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann whose social construction theory helps describe how social and cultural realities are created through continuous interactions between individuals. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that escapism at Bira Beach not only impacts individual experiences, but also has broad implications for social and cultural structures. Tourism and escapism, as social and economic phenomena, play a critical role in shaping and changing the dynamics of local communities, creating challenges and opportunities that must be managed with an approach that is inclusive and sensitive to social and cultural aspects. This research reveals that a deep understanding of the interactions between structure and agency is critical to facilitating harmonious sustainable development between visitors and local communities.

Abstract

Philosophy is present to answer human questions that are not addressed by other fields of knowledge. Every branch of knowledge begins with philosophy and ends with art. This means that all sciences, both natural and social sciences, originate from philosophy before undergoing further development. As the foundation of knowledge, philosophy questions sciences based on ontological, epistemological, and axiological aspects. This paper is compiled from a literature review (library research method) of Foucault's works, the works of theorists mapping Foucault's social thoughts, and research based on Foucault's approach. The literature study method is a study used to gather information and data with the help of various materials available in the library, such as documents, books, magazines, and so on. Many contributions have been made by Foucault to the intellectual world, whether in philosophy, culture, social, political, or artistic fields. One of Foucault's significant contributions in philosophy and politics is his concept of power. Therefore, acquiring knowledge through educational programs requires power, in this case, referring to proficient language abilities, and conversely, gaining power requires knowledge. Knowledge indeed holds power and brings about authority, and obtaining knowledge also requires authority. The results of this thinking can be observed in real-life, such as in the United States, which has become a superpower due to the abundance of information received and language hegemony that demonstrates a balance of power.

Abstract

Psychoanalytic theory seeks to explain how personality develops with a focus on motivation, emotions, and other internal aspects. Essentially, psychoanalysis is the result of Freud's ideas about the power of preconscious structures (id, ego, and superego) in controlling human behavior. The implication is that human behavior is controlled by preconscious structures, manifested as imitations, with their control lying in lost childhood memories. The method used in this writing is a literature review, involving a critical analysis of written sources (literature) on a specific topic, enabling the creation of summaries, classifications, comparisons, or even evaluations. Freud believed that humans are constantly driven by a desire for pleasure. However, what one encounters in the external world may not always be an ideal condition that supports these drives. Hence, the idea of a conflict between these drives and the external world arises. This notion led Freud to the concept most famous among his others: the three points of human personality as the Ego (Latin for "I"), Superego (Latin for "above/I above"), and Id (Latin for "this/it"). Freud categorized character development into three stages: infantile (0-5 years), latent (5-12 years), and genital (12 years). The psychoanalytic theory introduced by Freud helps understand human personality and categorize normal and pathological behaviors. Freud believed that humans always experience conflicts, both internal and external, that must be resolved to achieve balance.

Abstract

This study aims to gather information on the decline in the quality of teachers and students as a result of the Free Curriculum policy, using Max Horkheimer's critical social theory approach. The methodology employed is qualitative descriptive, which will elaborate on data through descriptive statements. Data is obtained through a literature review of previous studies and informants who have implemented this Free Curriculum policy. The findings of this research indicate that the Free Curriculum is part of modernity in the educational aspect. Modernity is a state where all traditionally oriented societal systems are released into an order that implies rationality. The essence of modernization fundamentally encourages embracing change towards improvement in line with the capacity of the surrounding community conditions. Differentiated learning poses new problems and burdens for teachers due to time constraints. The standards to be achieved become biased and unclear. The impact of this policy is that students experience a decline in the quality of understanding the material because it is challenging to meet achievement standards maximally due to diversity in potential and interests. Teachers are not maximally able to provide standardized teaching but are more focused on organizing and designing strategies for this diversity. The role of teachers as facilitators allows limited room to maximize the inculcation of values. Discrimination against teachers through the "teacher mover" program resulting from the Free Curriculum policy has an impact on the opportunities provided, creating discrimination and generating barriers and comparisons between participating and non-participating teachers.
