Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the epistemological obstacles encountered by junior high school students when solving PISA-based mathematical literacy problems on the topic of System of Linear Equations in Two Variables (SLETV), viewed from the perspective of PISA competency levels. The research seeks to contribute to the development of more effective mathematics instruction. This study is deemed essential because epistemological obstacles can hinder students' ability to apply mathematical concepts in real-world contexts an ability that is central to international assessments such as PISA. A qualitative approach was employed through Didactical Design Research (DDR), involving 23 ninth-grade students. Data were collected through a written test consisting of a mathematical literacy problem adapted from PISA items, and supported by interviews and classroom observations. The data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods, focusing on students’ thinking processes and emerging error patterns. The findings reveal that students encounter various epistemological obstacles across all PISA competency levels (1b to 6), such as conceptual misconceptions, procedural errors, and difficulties in translating contextual information. At the lower levels (1b–3), students struggled to formulate basic algebraic models and perform arithmetic operations. At the higher levels (4–6), they experienced challenges in handling complex calculations, verifying solutions, and applying reasoning in abstract or multi-step situations. These obstacles stem from fragmented prior knowledge, limited exposure to contextual problems, and a lack of reflective habits. This study highlights the importance of integrating authentic real-world problems, providing systematic scaffolding, and fostering continuous self-verification practices in instructional design. The findings offer practical insights for developing targeted pedagogical interventions to enhance students' mathematical literacy and better prepare them to tackle SLETV problems in contexts similar to those featured in PISA.

Abstract

It is necessary to develop a mathematics learning model in pesantren that is associated with problems that are following the situation in the Islamic boarding school, for example, related to fiqh. This study used Design Didactical Research (DDR). The development of this didactic design was carried out using the Theory of Didactical Situation (TDS). The learning mathematics in pesantren is designed as follows: reading of the holy verses of Al-Qur'an and Hadith related to mathematics learning materials; the material and learning objectives associated with Islamic knowledge; and giving an overview of the benefits of studying the material to be studied in everyday life, especially when later becoming a cadre of the ulama. Didactic design development is based on the theory of didactic situation, namely: In the case of Devolution, santri are given the challenge of solving zakat and inheritance problems; in Mathematical Situations, santri who have not been able to complete the main difficulties are guided through questions, tables, and instructions. Likewise, santri, who already has problem-solving guesses, continues to test the validity of these assumptions by answering several questions, paying attention to tables, and carrying out instructions; 3) Situation of Institutionalization, santri makes conclusions with teacher guidance about essential points.

Abstract

One of the challenges faced by students is the limited access to computer laboratory facilities, which hampers mathematics learning, particularly in numerical methods. This limitation impedes the development of critical mathematical thinking skills essential for understanding algorithms and constructing numerical solution programs, highlighting the need to prioritize the development of these skills. Direct instruction is less effective, necessitating an enhancement through the use of interactive digital media, specifically computer-assisted instruction, known as Direct Instruction-Computer Assisted (DI-CA). This research employs a research and development (RnD) approach to create and validate digital instructional media to improve students' mathematical reasoning. The research subjects are mathematics education students, and data are obtained from expert validation, user experience, and mathematical reasoning ability tests through pre-tests and post-tests. The web-based instructional media used in DI-CA was validated based on clarity of instructions, content appropriateness, and user experience, all of which were confirmed to be valid. The trial involving 33 students yielded an average mathematical reasoning test score of 61.21, ranging between 56.59 and 65.84, indicating an improvement in reasoning skills. This study underscores the importance of integrating computer technology into instruction, which can enhance learning experiences and academic performance in mathematics.

Abstract

It is essential for students to master mathematical literacy, which includes the ability to formulate, apply, and interpret when solving problems. However, students still encounter difficulties in the mathematical literacy process, especially in the topics of ratio and proportion, which can be categorized as learning obstacles. This study aims to identify students' learning obstacles from three aspects: epistemological, didactic, and ontogenic in the context of mathematical literacy on ratio and proportion material. This research uses a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods, involving 78 eighth-grade students in Palembang, South Sumatra. Data collection techniques include tests and interviews, while data analysis is conducted qualitatively through triangulation techniques to enhance the credibility of the findings. The results indicate that students experience all three types of learning obstacles in the mathematical literacy process. Epistemological obstacles arise from a limited understanding of the basic concept of ratios, didactic obstacles stem from suboptimal teaching methods, and ontogenic obstacles are due to students' cognitive readiness for understanding proportional reasoning.
