Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between metacognitive awareness, self-efficacy, and learning motivation on biology learning outcomes of eleventh-grade students in public high schools in Soppeng Regency, both directly and indirectly. This quantitative study employed an ex post facto correlation approach with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) analysis techniques. A sample of 505 students was selected using simple random sampling and proportional sampling techniques from a total population of 1.444 students. The instruments used included questionnaires on metacognitive awareness, self-efficacy, and learning motivation, as well as a biology learning achievement test. The results showed that metacognitive awareness was significantly related to learning motivation (p=0.00), but had no direct effect on learning outcomes (p=0.06). Self-efficacy was significantly related to learning outcomes (p=0.01), but not significantly to learning motivation (p=0.06). Learning motivation was also significantly related to learning outcomes (p=0.00). Indirectly, metacognitive awareness has a significant relationship with learning outcomes through the mediation of learning motivation (p=0.00) and self-efficacy (p=0.02). However, the indirect relationship between self-efficacy and learning outcomes through learning motivation was not significant (p=0.16). The conclusion of this study confirms that learning motivation plays a crucial role as a primary mediator. Increasing metacognitive awareness and self-efficacy needs to be optimized in an integrated manner to improve student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical period for establishing lifelong dietary habits, yet nutritional knowledge among Indonesian adolescents remains inadequate. This study aimed to examine the effect of nutrition education using digital flipchart media on nutritional knowledge and eating patterns among adolescents at Metro School Makassar. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group was employed, involving 90 adolescents divided equally into an experimental group (digital flipchart) and a control group (PowerPoint). Data were collected using a 30-item multiple-choice nutritional knowledge test and a 40-item eating pattern questionnaire adapted from the WHO Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS), the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS), and the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the independent sample t-test following normality (Shapiro-Wilk) and homogeneity (Levene) tests. Results showed that the experimental group achieved a mean posttest nutritional knowledge score of 25.82 (SD = 1.749), with 91.1% of students categorized as "good," compared to 19.76 (SD = 1.798) in the control group, where no student reached the "good" category. Eating pattern scores also improved significantly in the experimental group (mean posttest = 149.22), with 91.1% achieving the "good" category, while the control group remained at the "adequate" level. Independent sample t-tests confirmed significant differences between groups for both nutritional knowledge (p = 0.000) and eating patterns (p = 0.000). These findings demonstrate that digital flipchart media is significantly more effective than PowerPoint in improving nutritional knowledge and eating patterns among adolescents.

Abstract

Tourism expansion in environmentally sensitive coastal areas continues to intensify ecological pressures, while conventional environmental education often remains disconnected from indigenous socio-cultural realities. Although customary institutions have long contributed to environmental stewardship, limited research has transformed indigenous governance into a structured educational framework for sustainable tourism. This study aimed to develop and validate an Ethno-ecotourism-based Environmental Education Model that operationalizes Acehnese customary institutions as pedagogical mechanisms for sustainability education. Using a Research and Development (R&D) approach through the Four-D framework and a sequential explanatory mixed-method design, data were collected through interviews and observations involving 15 key informants, expert validation by seven specialists, and practicality testing with 30 tourism practitioners. Qualitative data were analyzed using the interactive model of Huberman and Saldaña, while quantitative data were examined using descriptive statistics. The findings indicated that the model was both valid and practical, with the social system emerging as its strongest component. The study demonstrated that indigenous governance could serve as an educational infrastructure that strengthened environmental responsibility, community-based conservation, and sustainable tourism. By integrating customary law into a validated pedagogical framework, this research contributes to the theory of environmental education and provides a culturally responsive pathway to sustainability in indigenous and coastal communities.

Abstract

The dominance of lecture-based instruction in biology learning limits students’ ability to relate concepts to real-life phenomena, interpret graphical or tabular data, and construct scientific arguments, resulting in low cognitive achievement and inadequate science literacy. This study aims to examine the effect of a Deep Learning-based Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on students’ cognitive learning outcomes and science literacy. A quantitative, quasi-experimental design was employed, involving an experimental and a control class selected via simple random sampling. Data were collected using pretest-posttest instruments and analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Independent Samples T Test. The results showed that the experimental class achieved higher average posttest scores for cognitive learning outcomes (60.86 vs. 56.33) and science literacy (72.25 vs. 68.67) compared to the control class. Hypothesis testing confirmed that the Deep Learning-oriented PBL model significantly influenced cognitive learning outcomes (t = −7.577; p = 0.000 < 0.05) and science literacy (t = −8.391; p = 0.000 < 0.05). These findings indicate that the Deep Learning-oriented PBL model is more effective than the Deep Learning-oriented Direct Instruction model in developing students’ cognitive learning outcomes and science literacy in 21st-century biology education.
