Abstract

Research on poor-quality journals seems to be an inexhaustible study. The present study aims to understand the experiences of 3 Indonesian academics who published their scientific articles in disreputable journals. This phenomenology study was conducted within the framework of a qualitative approach. Data were collected by in-depth interviews academics. The study identified three key themes: Lack of Necessary Skills, Overestimation of Western Hegemony, and Acceptance of Fate. The findings indicated that some factors caused the academics to take shortcuts to get their articles published. The pressure to acquire the promotion to become a professor was the main factor influencing Indonesian academics to publish in these fast-turnaround journals. The findings highlight the need for academic institutions and policymakers to critically address the systemic pressures that drive scholars toward low-quality publishing outlets. Strengthening mentorship, providing training in academic writing, and reforming promotion policies to reward quality over quantity are essential to safeguard academic integrity. Furthermore, the study underscores the global implications of these issues, urging international academic bodies to collaborate in setting higher standards for research dissemination and evaluation practices.

Abstract

This study examines the syntactic forms and sentence functions found in TikTok captions as a representation of digital language communication. TikTok is a social media platform that integrates visual content and text, in which captions play a significant role in conveying meaning and interaction. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach based on syntactic theories proposed by Chomsky, Givón, Halliday, O’Grady, and Aarts. The data consist of three English captions taken from the TikTok accounts @beaulinaa, @Rikey, and @lilly3ls. The findings reveal that TikTok captions predominantly use simple sentence structures with a high degree of ellipsis as a strategy of linguistic economy while maintaining acceptable grammatical patterns. In terms of function, the captions demonstrate pragmatic variation, including declarative, imperative, and expressive functions used for self-presentation, social relationship building, and audience engagement. These findings indicate that TikTok caption syntax represents a distinctive register of digital English that balances syntactic simplicity with communicative effectiveness in social media contexts. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini mengkaji bentuk sintaksis dan fungsi kalimat yang terdapat dalam caption TikTok sebagai representasi komunikasi bahasa digital. TikTok merupakan platform media sosial yang memadukan konten visual dan teks, di mana caption berperan penting dalam membangun makna dan interaksi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan landasan teori sintaksis dari Chomsky, Givón, Halliday, O’Grady, dan Aarts. Data penelitian berupa tiga caption berbahasa Inggris yang diambil dari akun TikTok @beaulinaa, @Rikey, dan @lilly3ls. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa caption TikTok cenderung menggunakan kalimat sederhana dengan tingkat elipsis yang tinggi sebagai bentuk ekonomi bahasa, namun tetap mempertahankan struktur gramatikal yang dapat diterima. Dari segi fungsi, caption menampilkan keragaman fungsi pragmatik, seperti deklaratif, imperatif, dan ekspresif, yang digunakan untuk presentasi diri, pembentukan relasi sosial, serta peningkatan keterlibatan audiens. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa sintaksis caption TikTok membentuk ragam bahasa Inggris digital yang khas, yang menyeimbangkan kesederhanaan struktur sintaksis dengan efektivitas komunikasi dalam konteks media sosial.

Abstract

This study investigates the syntactic competence of fifth-semester Tadris English students at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara (UINSU) in producing academic writing. The purpose of this study is to identify common syntactic errors and examine students’ ability to apply syntactic structures accurately in academic texts. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 20 students as participants. The data were obtained from students’ academic writing assignments in the form of short essays and analyzed using error analysis techniques. The analysis focused on sentence structure, clause construction, subject–verb agreement, word order, and the use of connectors. The findings indicate that although students demonstrate basic understanding of English syntax, they still encounter difficulties in producing complex syntactic structures. Sentence structure errors, subject–verb agreement problems, and clause construction errors were the most frequently identified. These findings suggest that students have not fully mastered syntactic rules required for effective academic writing. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of explicit syntactic instruction, guided writing practice, and corrective feedback to enhance students’ syntactic competence in EFL academic contexts. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji kompetensi sintaksis mahasiswa semester lima Program Studi Tadris Bahasa Inggris Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara (UINSU) dalam penulisan akademik. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan melibatkan 20 mahasiswa sebagai partisipan. Data diperoleh dari tugas menulis akademik mahasiswa berupa esai singkat yang dianalisis menggunakan teknik analisis kesalahan. Analisis difokuskan pada struktur kalimat, konstruksi klausa, kesesuaian subjek dan verba, urutan kata, serta penggunaan konjungsi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa meskipun mahasiswa telah memiliki pemahaman dasar mengenai sintaksis bahasa Inggris, mereka masih mengalami kesulitan dalam menggunakan struktur sintaksis yang kompleks. Kesalahan yang paling sering ditemukan meliputi kesalahan struktur kalimat, kesesuaian subjek dan verba, serta konstruksi klausa. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa belum sepenuhnya menguasai kaidah sintaksis yang diperlukan dalam penulisan akademik. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini menekankan pentingnya pengajaran sintaksis secara eksplisit, latihan menulis yang terarah, serta pemberian umpan balik untuk meningkatkan kompetensi sintaksis mahasiswa dalam konteks EFL.

Abstract

This article examines clause structure in Indonesian pop song lyrics from a syntactic perspective using a literature review approach. Rather than conducting primary data analysis, the study synthesizes findings from journal articles, undergraduate theses, and empirical studies that focus on syntactic patterns in song lyrics. As a form of artistic discourse, pop song lyrics exhibit flexible linguistic characteristics and frequently diverge from canonical syntactic rules to accommodate aesthetic, expressive, and rhythmic demands. The synthesis reveals that Indonesian pop song lyrics predominantly employ simple clause structures, subject and object ellipsis, inversion, and fragmentary constructions. These syntactic patterns function to enhance emotional expression, maintain alignment with melodic structure, and increase memorability and listener engagement. The findings further indicate that syntactic realization in song lyrics occupies an intermediate position between spoken and written language, emphasizing functional and contextual meaning over formal grammatical completeness. This article provides a comprehensive overview of dominant clause structure characteristics in Indonesian pop song lyrics and discusses their implications for syntactic analysis, lyrical interpretation, and linguistic studies in popular music media. ABSTRAK Artikel ini mengkaji struktur klausa dalam lirik lagu pop Indonesia dari perspektif sintaksis melalui pendekatan tinjauan literatur. Penelitian ini tidak melakukan analisis data primer, melainkan mensintesis temuan dari artikel jurnal, skripsi, dan studi empiris yang membahas pola sintaksis dalam lirik lagu. Lirik lagu pop sebagai bentuk wacana artistik memiliki karakteristik kebahasaan yang cenderung fleksibel dan sering menyimpang dari kaidah sintaksis kanonik guna memenuhi tuntutan estetika, ekspresif, dan ritmis. Hasil sintesis menunjukkan bahwa lirik lagu pop Indonesia secara dominan menggunakan struktur klausa sederhana, elipsis subjek dan objek, inversi, serta konstruksi fragmentaris. Pola-pola sintaksis tersebut berfungsi untuk memperkuat ekspresi emosional, menjaga keselarasan dengan struktur melodi, serta meningkatkan daya ingat dan keterlibatan pendengar. Temuan ini juga menunjukkan bahwa realisasi sintaksis dalam lirik lagu menempati posisi antara bahasa lisan dan bahasa tulis, dengan penekanan pada fungsi komunikatif dan kontekstual. Artikel ini memberikan gambaran komprehensif mengenai karakteristik struktur klausa dalam lirik lagu pop Indonesia serta implikasinya bagi kajian sintaksis, interpretasi lirik, dan studi kebahasaan dalam media musik populer.
