Abstract

This research sought to determine translation techniques used by a subtitler to translate speech acts found in quarelling speech event and to describe the impact of the translation techniques on speech act shift in Ted 2 movie. The data in this reseach were sentences accommodating speech acts in quarelling speech event in Indonesian and English subtitles of Ted 2 movie and translation techniques used by the subtitler to translate the speech acts in quarreling speech event. Abstract

This paper examines how character development is analyzed through attitude, genre’s stages, and phases in children's stories. Relying on ten children's stories purposively selected from two children's storybooks, the results show that all ten stories are written as narratives with a number of absences of attitude, stages, and phases of the narrative genre. most stories succeed to fulfill the obligatory stages of narrative: orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution, even others add the optional stage, coda. However, a number of stories fail to satisfy the presence of evaluation. in addition, all stories do not exploit attitude in every phase of every stage of the narrative. Even, a number of stories miss exploiting Attitude in a number of prominent phases such as introducing the character in orientation, development, and peak of the conflict in complication, and plan and act in resolution. Besides, all ten stories do not explore all types of attitude and their sub-classifications, in which each type will contribute to the holistic description of the character. Thus, although all stories can be considered to develop character along the obligatory stages of the narrative genre, they still fail to build a more complex character development through positive-negative-positive evaluation through stages and phases of the stories. Keywords: character development; genre; stages; phases; attitude

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the pragmatic strategies of male and female customers while giving a nebulizer product review sold by Omron Healthcare in Tokopedia's online customer review and rating. The theories used in this research are gender and politeness strategies. This research is qualitative descriptive because the reality of the data depends on the context and is then described based on the context as well. The data source is in Tokopedia's online customer review, whereas the data are transcripts of male and female customers' comments on Omron Healthcare's nebulizer product. This research finds 50 data: 25 are male, and 25 are female customers. The findings show that male and female customers mostly use positive politeness while giving product reviews. However, females only use two sub-strategies of positive politeness, whereas males use four. Furthermore, the research finds that male customers use negative politeness strategies more often. Additionally, males use more off-record than females. Lastly, only males use the off-record strategy. In short, male and female customers give positive comments, but female customers use more hyperbolic expressions, while male customers use reciprocity and approval. Keywords: gender, online customer review, politeness strategy, pragmatics

Abstract

Faith and morality have been parts of Indonesian society. The values of Pancasila as the national ideology are sufficient to proof that this nation’s relationship with faith and morality has been inseparable. This study aims to analyze one of the dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile, “faith, devotion to God Almighty, and noble character,” through the application of politeness strategies in textbook dialogues. The method of this study is qualitative content analysis. The data collection technique of this study is documentation. The data are in the form of dialogue texts from two textbooks from the series of “Buku PR Interaktif Bahasa Inggris.” This study implements the politeness strategy by Brown and Levinson (1987) and the Pancasila Student Profile as part of Indonesia’s character education as the frameworks of this study. After collecting and categorizing the data using those two frameworks, the results of this study show two elements of “faith, devotion to God Almighty, and noble character” to be represented through politeness strategies in the dialogue texts in both of the textbooks. These elements are “moral towards humans” and “moral towards nature.” The results suggest textbook authors to include more balanced representation of all elements within “faith, devotion to God Almighty, and noble character” in order to develop students’ character to be well-rounded individuals. These results also suggest teachers to utilize the textbook dialogues through various activities such as roleplay, group reading, and group discussion to help students learn various types of morality in interactive ways.

Abstract

The objectives were to find expressive acts and to explain how expressive acts performed negative politeness in the Rosi talk show. The theories used politeness strategy by Brown and Levinson (1987) on negative politeness in expressive act by Searle (1975) by the moderator. This study used qualitative content analysis, and the location was YouTube Channel KompasTV. The data were the moderator utterances involving expressive acts representing negative politeness. This research was a purposive sampling technique focussing on three segments in ‘student’s demonstration and Ade Armando percussion’. The data collection technique was free to engage in conversation to transcribe data audio into written, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was used to know the moderator's politeness tendencies. This study used an interactive method by Miles&Huberman (1992) to conclude. The result showed 18 expressive acts with six sub-strategy of negative politeness. Then, seven expressive speech acts: thanking, apologising, blaming, praising, showing sympathy, and accusing. Next, the dominant moderators’ expressive act was blaming. While there are four subnegative politeness strategies: indirect, making pessimism, minimising impositions, and apologising. The researcher found that negative politeness strategies were realised with expressive acts using suspecting to interact with pros participants.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how language is used to portray Lintang as a resilient and gritty character in the novel Laskar Pelangi, through the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and drawing on Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal theory. The specific objective of this research is to explore how linguistic choices in the novel construct the character of Lintang in terms of his resilience and grit, focusing on the aspects of judgment, particularly tenacity, capacity, and normality. The method used in this study involves a qualitative analysis of textual evidence from the novel. Linguistic elements related to judgment are identified, categorized, and analyzed based on their contribution to portraying Lintang’s resilience and grit. The findings of this study reveal that Lintang's character is constructed through a combination of linguistic elements that emphasize his extraordinary tenacity, strong capacity, and relatable normality. Despite being frequently underestimated due to his simple physical appearance, these linguistic choices underscore his resilience and grit. Lintang’s ability to overcome societal prejudices and physical limitations highlights the message that true success comes from inner strength and persistence. By illustrating Lintang's journey, Hirata effectively conveys that physical appearance does not define one's potential for greatness. This research contributes to the understanding of how literary characters can inspire resilience and grit in readers, providing valuable insights into storytelling methods that emphasize character development through language.
