Abstract

The expressive skill is a verbal language skill to interact with other people. The ability of children with autism to express ideas in their mind can indicate that their receptive ability works effectively. The purpose of this research was to study types of utterances the children can produce. Data in the forms of utterances produced by the children as responses to initiating acts performed by their teachers were collected. Data were then analysed to classify them in accordance to the process the utterances were produced. The results show that the children’ skills in executing utterances are classified into four types of processes, i.e.  word imitating (subtest CELF-R); imitating, producing word, arranging word (subtest CELF-3); expressing word, producing word, imitating word (subtest CELF-4); and continuing and mentioning word. Keywords: children, autism, utterance process, expresive skillKEMAMPUAN EKSPRESIF ANAK AUTISME: SEBUAH KAJIAN PSIKOLINGUISTIKAbstrakKemampuan ekspresif adalah kemampuan bahasa secara verbal untuk saling berinteraksi. Abstract

Language phenomena related to the use of impoliteness strategies are always associated with efforts to do FTA. This study aims to find out the role of context theory (power, distance, and rank of imposition) in various language impoliteness strategies in Sukoharjo traditional markets. This pragmatic research by reviewing three dimensions of context is descriptive qualitative research. The data are in form of direct speech between sellers and buyers which accommodate impolite strategies in Javanese regarding overall market situation including transaction and non-transaction activities. The results of this study are the level of power based on social status and class, speech situations role, age, gender, and physical strength. All of these parts affect the power that speakers have based on the context of speech event. The imposition rank found in the buyer's strategies because more buyers have a positive desire to interact and transact in language situations. These three major context factors greatly influence the appearance of data on the use of impolite strategies in speech situations in the Sukoharjo traditional market. Keywords: Impoliteness act, power, distance, imposition rank, traditional market

Abstract

This study was aimed at analyzing the Indonesian translation of spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors made by autistic character in Flower for Algernon novel. It also analyzes  translation techniques, methods, ideology, qualities of the translation. The method applied was descriptive-qualitative with the data in the form of translated words and phrases indicating spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors made by the autistic character. The primary data sources were Flower for Algernon novel along with its translation version in Indonesian. Meanwhile, the secondary data sources were informants who gave information on the accuracy, acceptability, and readability of translation. The process of collecting data used documentation, questionnaire distribution, and focus group discussion (FGD) technique whereas the sampling technique applied is purposive sampling. The findings of this research show that there are 309 data of words containing spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors. Four translation techniques are used by translator namely graphology normalizations, established equivalent, compensation, and deletion. The translation method used tends to be established equivalent with domestication ideology. The translation of words with errors by graphology normalization techniques produced accurate translations with decreases in acceptability. This is because the translator removes the autism markers from the source language to the target language.

Abstract

This present study aims to explore the cultural values represented in the local EFL textbook as a source of learning materials in Islamic Junior High Schools. This study implemented a qualitative approach as a research design. Three English teachers as participants were recruited purposively. The data collected from textbook analysis using the types of speech acts, and politeness strategies through the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to strengthen the data. Then, the data were analyzed thematically. The study revealed that local English textbooks effectively represented cultural values and beliefs. The finding showed that the EFL local textbooks effectually encourage cultural awareness and English language proficiency among students. The cultural values performed in the textbook are greetings, politeness, self-introduction, hobbies, and family interactions, which exhibit the polite culture of how Indonesians communicate. The representation of family lunch highlighted the tradition that shapes Indonesian culture. Additionally, it implied that the teachers perceived the content in the textbook because it highlights moral values that are suitable in Indonesian culture. It has a significant implication for establishing English curricula to construct a proper local English textbook for Islamic junior high school students. This study demonstrated that local English textbooks included interesting and collaborative activities that highlighted Islamic traditions, fostering tolerance and respect. It also highlighted moral and cultural values that students could use to develop good manners.

Abstract

The Yemeni EFL learners are prone to share their knowledge and views regarding what and how to say. The constraints of combining this expertise have hampered learners’ writing success. Those obstacles can cause learners to make errors. Error Analysis (EA) and Surface Strategy Taxonomy (SST) were used to analyze learners’ linguistic errors. Error causes were also investigated. This research used a qualitative process style to use a case study approach. Ellis’ five-step EA procedure was followed to analyze essay data each comprising 100-350 words or more written by 20 Yemeni EFL eighth semester Arabic-speaking learners at the Department of Education, Sana’a University, Yemen. They were purposely selected as research subjects. It was noticed that omission was the most common error detected in the learners’ writings. Overall, this form of error accounted for 58.71% of 118 cases out of 201 cases. The learners’ common error categories were the number marker, verb-tenses articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreements, and pronouns. This was preceded by addition (20.39%), incorrect formation (15.92%), and word order (4.97%). Intralingual transfer turned out to be the key reason that caused the errors in the learners’ writing. Any of the interlinguistic comparisons was the cause behind the errors. In terms of verb conjugation component, inflectional morpheme, and auxiliary verb abandonment, Arabic and English have different formal definitions. Interlingual transfer and learning context also caused errors. To prevent errors from fossilizing, language instructors should provide continual corrective feedback, and learners should pursue the correct target language form.

Abstract

Indonesian elementary school students show their motivation to write. A kind of books written by and for children of their age, commonly termed as Kecil-Kecil Punya Karya (KKPK) ‘although young we have writing works’, are nowdays available at bookstores. These books can further motivate other children to compose. To accommodate this motivation, the language center of Sebelas Maret University of Surakarta held a writing contest for elementary school students in Surakarta and the surrounding area. Thirtyfour students participated the contest, thus 34 texts from such a competition were collected as the object of analysis in this study to see the quality of the text structure as well as the text texture of the texts. The analysis on the text structure shows that several texts are arranged in a single kind of genre. However, the other texts are composed in multi-genre—meaning that each text in this kind demonstrates the features of a genre, but it accomodates other short texts with different genre. The former is named as a text with a macro genre, whereas the latter are termed as texts with a micro one. Meanwhile, the choice of words and the exploitatio of grammatical construction for the clauses of most of the texts shows weaknesses. Many academic and technical terms as well as nominalization are exploited. In addition, several texts have metaphorical words in them. This phenomenon influences the readability level of the texts. Furthermore, many clauses are constructed in complex arrangement, while some otheSrs incomplete in terms of grammar substances. This, therefore, add the negative quality of the texts. Several systemic strategies are provided to make the texts better. They can be effective models for the young writers as well as for the teachers of Bahasa Indonesia subject at elementary schools. Keywords: Genre, Cerita, Gramatika, Teks
