Abstract

This study aims to develop a mathematics test with the COVID-19 context to measure the student's skill competencies in grade VIII SMP/MTs. This study was a research development by following the test development procedures: compiling blueprints, writing items, reviewing questions, testing, analyzing the results of trials, and revising. The developed test consists of multiple-choice items with four options. These items were validated content by three experts (teacher, lecturer, and mathematics trainer) and were tested to 86 students. This study developed a mathematics test set with the COVID-19 context consisting of ten items that experts declared valid. Trial of ten items showed two items (numbers 7 and 6), which were not good. Item number 7 was too easy, while item number 6 was not good in the discrimination index. Besides, the two distractors in item number 7 did not work correctly. The estimated coefficient of reliability of the measurement results was quite high, indicated by a coefficient value of 0.658. The items that were not good have been revised by modifying the items so that the index of difficulty and discrimination look good. Useful and revised items were assembled into a mathematics test set for grade VIII students.

Abstract

Refractive thinking needs to be developed in lectures because it has an essential role in decision-making. However, so far, there has not been found any relevant research that develops refractive thinking through applying a learning strategy. The purpose of this study was to obtain an overview of the enhancement of students' mathematical refractive thinking ability based on prior mathematical knowledge through the application of Peer-Assisted Reflection learning and the influence of the interaction of learning factors and the level of prior mathematical knowledge on enhancing mathematical refractive thinking ability. This research is a quantitative study with a quasi-experimental design. Using the purposive sampling technique, 73 students were selected to take the Multivariable Calculus course. The research sample was students who took the Multivariable Calculus course. The instrument used was a prior mathematical knowledge test and a mathematical refractive thinking ability test. Data analysis used t-test, t’-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Aligned Rank Transform, and two-way ANOVA. The findings of this study are: (1) The enhancement of students' mathematical refractive thinking ability who got Peer-Assisted Reflection learning is better than those who got conventional learning for all levels of prior mathematical knowledge; and (2) There is no significant effect on the interaction between learning and prior mathematical knowledge on improving mathematical refractive thinking ability.

Abstract

According to Van Hiele, in understanding geometry, students need to understand five stages, namely stage 1 (introduction stage), stage 2 (analysis stage), stage 3 (sequencing stage), stage 4 (deduction stage), and stage 5 (accuracy stage). Each student has different geometric thinking abilities. This study aims to examine the geometric abilities of junior high school students in the material of flat-sided geometry according to Van Hiele's Theory. This research belongs to the type of qualitative research with a case study design. It was conducted at three schools in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The subjects were students of SMP Negeri 1 Padang, SMP Negeri 7 Padang, and SMP Negeri 25 Padang. Data collection was carried out using tests, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and data verification or drawing conclusions. The data originality technique was carried out with the triangulation technique, where the researcher compared the test data with the results of interviews with students. Of the 94 students (male = 38, female 56) tested based on the geometric thinking level of Van Hiele Theory, 92.55% of the students reached the Van Hiele thinking stage at the visualization level. As many as 45.74% of students reached the level of geometric analysis, and 6.38% of students reached the level of abstraction. For the level of deduction and accuracy, no one has been able to solve the problem. The results obtained in this study are that most students are still at stages 1 and 2, unlike van Hiele's opinion, which revealed that the level of geometric thinking for junior high school students is at level 3. According to the study results, it is essential to carry out further checks on the level of geometric thinking of junior high school students in other areas.

Abstract

The integration of art into mathematics is currently still carried out by paying attention to the aesthetic value of student projects. However, its use has not been found to expand artistic or cultural values knowledge. This study aims to conduct a study related to the integration of batik art in mathematics learning on the topic of circles in elementary schools, where batik art contains not only aesthetic meaning but also cultural values and is the identity of the Indonesian nation. This research is focused on content design, the use of methods, and their effect on learning outcomes. The integration of batik art in learning is carried out to support the development of STEAM-based learning. This study used a quasi-experimental method using the design of One group posttest only with multiple substantive posttests, which was carried out in 2 different elementary schools in grade 6 with a sample of 41 students consisting of 28 female students and 13 male students. Experimental learning uses circular batik motifs as an art aspect and project-based learning (PjBL) as a learning method. Data collection was carried out using three instruments: a final student ability test, interviews, and questionnaires. The results show an increase in student learning outcomes, reducing students' anxiety levels in learning, increasing student activity, and providing alternative solutions for implementing fine arts in learning, especially mathematics, on the topic of circles at elementary school. This research is expected to provide benefits of knowledge related to how art or culture can be instilled simultaneously with lessons, especially mathematics learning for educators.

Abstract

Some research about identifying the differences between male and female students’ written communication skills has been done before. However, the previous research only focused on qualitative studies. Therefore, there is still a lack of empirical proof of the result. This study aims to test whether a significant difference exists between male and female students' written mathematical communication skills and identify their performance difficulties. The subjects were 14 male and 14 female students at the junior high school. The instrument was a test of mathematical communication skills on quadrilateral topics. The research method used was a mixed method with a sequential explanatory design. The data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U to measure the difference between male and female students’ written mathematical communication skills, and document analysis was conducted to analyze their difficulties in performing written mathematical communication. The results showed that even though there is no significant difference between written mathematical communication skills between male and female students, there is a significant difference when viewed from each indicator.  In addition, the difficulties experienced by male and female students are difficulties expressing mathematical ideas using mathematical symbols, using facts and concepts to solve problems, and operating algebraic forms.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine how the number pattern concept's computational thinking characteristic picture was reviewed from the Kolb model's learning style. The research method used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The research was conducted at one of the state's small schools in Bandung. The research subjects consisted of 29 students in the ninth grade. One of the 29 study issues is selected with assimilator learning styles. The data-gathering techniques used are questionnaire tests, test instruments, and interviews. Angket is used to group subjects into four groups of learning style types. The test instrument was used to describe the computational thinking characteristics of high school students on the concept of number patterns, and the interview was used to strengthen the test summary results of the subject. The results of this study show that the characteristics of computational thinking that each type of learning style dominates are different. Computational thinking students with an assimilator learning style in solving mathematical problems of number patterns can solve issues by involving decomposition, pattern identification, abstraction and generalization, and algorithms. They can generalize patterns using accurate, thorough, complete, and systematic problem-solving strategies.
