Abstract

This research examines various scholarly works that discuss the use of songs in English language teaching (ELT), focusing on their pedagogical benefits and theoretical foundations. The main objective of this research is to identify how songs support language acquisition from linguistic, cognitive and affective perspectives. The research used a systematic literature review method, with a qualitative content analysis approach and narrative synthesis of ten selected sources published between 2000 and 2024. The analysis shows that songs can improve students' vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, grammar awareness, motivation and emotional engagement. These findings are reinforced by various learning theories such as Krashen's Affective Filter Hypothesis, Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory, and Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development. Although songs proved to be an effective tool in teaching English, some challenges were also identified, such as curriculum limitations, lack of teacher training, and inappropriate song selection. This study concludes that songs are a powerful learning medium if applied carefully and adapted to the context. It also recommends further development of structured and theory-based song-based teaching materials and teacher training to support their effective implementation in the classroom.

Abstract

Purpose — This study examines the influence of managerial and environmental factors on the adoption of eco-innovation practices to improve business sustainability in small manufacturing firms.Method — The research employs a quantitative approach, gathering primary data from 110 owners and managers of small manufacturing firms in Bandung, Indonesia. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is utilized to analyze the relationships between managerial and environmental drivers, eco-innovation practices, and business sustainability. The data was analyzed using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method via SmartPLS 3.0 software.Result — The study's findings demonstrate that both managerial drivers (such as eco-commitment, eco-efficiency, and eco-capability) and environmental drivers (including eco-consumer demand, eco-regulation, and eco-competition) have a significant positive impact on the adoption of eco-innovation practices. These eco-innovation practices, in turn, significantly contribute to enhancing business sustainability. This underscores the importance of integrating sustainable practices into business operations and proactively responding to environmental pressures to achieve long-term competitive advantage.Novelty — This research offers new insights by focusing on small manufacturing firms in an emerging market—a context that has been relatively underexplored in existing literature. Unlike previous studies that mainly target large enterprises or developed markets, this study highlights the critical role of eco-innovation in promoting sustainability within small firms in Indonesia. Moreover, it distinguishes the unique impacts of both managerial and environmental drivers, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the factors that motivate the adoption of eco-innovation practices in small enterprises.

Abstract

Expressive language skills are an important aspect in early childhood development because they play a role in conveying ideas, feelings, and experiences verbally. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The research subjects consisted of two children in group B at Aisyiyah 2 Kindergarten in Tasikmalaya, the class teacher, and the principal as supporting informants. The results showed that children have varied language development, ranging from passive to being able to construct coherent sentences. The modeling strategies used by teachers include providing verbal examples, facial expressions, gestures, and are adaptive to the child's characteristics and have proven effective in increasing speaking courage and sentence construction skills. Modeling-based scaffolding is an effective strategy in helping early childhood develop expressive language in a gradual, contextual, and meaningful manner. This study strengthens Vygotsky's theory of scaffolding and Bandura's social learning theory through the role of modeling in children's language development. Early childhood teachers are advised to use a modeling approach in daily interactions as a language stimulation strategy that is adaptive and responsive to characteristics.

Abstract

The use of authentic assessment in speaking tests has gained greater significance to close the gap between theory and practice in the classroom. Although its value in measuring actual language skills in everyday life is known, its effective implementation by teachers remains a problem and inconsistencies in measuring students' speaking skills are the result. This study aims to explore the implementation of authentic assessment in speaking tests in SMA Negeri 5 Pamekasan, namely the implementation processes employed by teachers and the impact towards the students' actual speaking abilities. Conducting a qualitative descriptive study, data were collected using interviews, observation, and documents to represent the naturalistic nature of the classroom and the teachers' assessment strategies. The study reveals that SMA Negeri 5 Pamekasan teachers have informal and formative tests that involve reading aloud, pronunciation, intonation, and confidence measures in classroom interactions. Question-answer and reading aloud are some of the strategies used to overcome the students' shyness to speak and judge more realistically their communications. The study concludes that authentic assessment, when properly understood and implemented, exactly measures students' speaking skill under actual circumstances and helps teachers know how to direct further improvement. This study provides implications and pedagogical suggestions for teachers to enhance authentic assessment practice in English speaking courses.
