Abstract

The aims of this study were to identify the effects of polymorphism of b-lactoglobulin gene on milk yield and percentage of milk protein and fat in local sheep. A total number of 83 heads of lactating ewes raised under an extensive management at Jonggol Animal Science Teaching and Research Unit (JASTRU) of the Faculty of Animal Science, Bogor Agricultural University were studied. Research activities were carried out through some steps involving blood collection. DNA isolation, DNA amplification, and separation of DNA fragments by electrophoresis with silver staining method. By using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) then genotyped by single strand conformation polymorphism technique (SSCP), it was successfully amplified a fragment length at 420 bp in b-lactoglobulin genelocated on the exon 7. The electrophoresis pattern revealed 5 types of b-lactoglobulin gene and designated as A, B, C, D, and E types. The proportion for those respective 5 type from the highest to the lowest were for A (27.71%), C (16.87%), D (12.05%), E (10.84%), and B (9.64%), respectively. There were no significant effect of polymorphisms in b-lactoglobulin gene on both milk yield and quality in local sheep at JASTRU.

Abstract

The lowland area of Indonesia has economic potential to develop as a major centre for dairy farming businesses. Still, there is a foremost matter: overheated irradiation immersed in damped air would increase the heat stress level. The present study was conducted to assess the heat stress tolerance level of lowland Indonesian Holstein cows, characterized by a dominant level of Black and White (B/W) pigmented skin coat. This study involved 34 heads of Holstein cows that were cared for in Eastern Jakarta. Breathing frequency (BF), rectum's warmth (RW), pulse rate (PL), white-skinned spot temperature (WSST), black-skinned spot temperature (BSST), average temperature rounded skin (ATRS), back region temperature (BRT), chest region temperature (CRT), upper-leg temperature (ULT), lower-leg temperature (LLT), skin's temperature (ST), body's temperature (BT), and heat tolerance coefficient (HTC) as variables were checked statistically with R 4.4.2 type software comprised correlation and independent t-test. Cows B/W classification performed with the imageJ 1.54g series program. Those analyses showed that most lowland Indonesian Holsteins were characterized by black-pigmented dominant cows (BDC). The pigmentation of both lateral sides of the body generated a significant correlation (p<0.05 and p<0.01) with several vital symptoms, including WSST, ATRS, ST, BT, and HTC, but only in the BDC Holstein class. The test of mean distinction between the two classes (BDC and WDC) produced statistically insignificant differences (p>0.05) in all measurable vital symptoms; all variables showed trends indicating that the BDC class had a greater response to heat stress. The BDC Holstein type selection base had high expectations of elevating the HTC score in Indonesian lowland cows, as the closing decision.

Abstract

Kebutuhan daging ayam di Indonesia terus meningkat seiring pertumbuhan penduduk dan kesadaran masyarakat terhadap konsumsi protein hewani. Untuk menjawab tantangan ini, pengembangan ayam lokal unggul seperti ayam IPB D3 menjadi solusi strategis. Ayam IPB D3 memiliki keunggulan dalam pertumbuhan bobot badan serta ketahanan terhadap penyakit dan stres, menjadikannya kandidat kuat sebagai galur lokal unggul nasional. Namun, sistem pemeliharaannya saat ini masih didominasi pola intensif, yang belum sepenuhnya mencerminkan kondisi peternakan rakyat di Indonesia yang umumnya mengombinasikan sistem intensif dan free-range. Ketidaksesuaian ini dapat berdampak pada performa dan kesehatan ayam secara umum. Oleh karena itu, diperlukan pengujian dan optimalisasi sistem pemeliharaan yang adaptif terhadap kondisi lapangan. Pendekatan ini diharapkan dapat meningkatkan performa dan ketahanan ayam IPB D3, sekaligus memperkuat peluangnya sebagai galur lokal unggul yang berdaya saing dan berkelanjutan dalam mendukung ketahanan pangan nasional.

Abstract

The level of fatty tissue in the body of Holstein cows impacts on the metabolic system, which in turn affects their physiological response. This study aimed to evaluate the involvement of Indonesian Holstein cows' body condition score (BCS) in altered physiological responses. The research samples consisted of 35 lactating Holstein cows raised at a dairy farm in East Jakarta. As part of the physiological responses, variables such as rectal temperature (Tr), skin surface temperature (Ts), body temperature (Tb), respiratory frequency (Rf), and heartbeats (Hb) were assessed. Meanwhile, the BCS was rated from 1 to 5. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, linear regression, and a one-way ANOVA test to examine mean differences. During the daytime period, Indonesian Holstein cows experienced a moderate level of heat stress. Physiological responses were low in the morning, sharply increased by noon, and then gradually rose slightly towards the afternoon. The distinct BCS status did not influence physiological responses throughout the daylight period (p>0.05) in the lowland tropical smallholder farm site. Still, an emergent signal suggests that BCS status contributes to the respiratory frequencies (Rf) and heartbeats (Hb) in the specific score of BCS. In conclusion, the share of BCS status in the shift of physiological responses in the lowland Indonesian Holstein exposed to moderate-level heat stress was not substantial enough, as the paramount factor in heat stress is ambient temperature.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and chromium (Cr) in diets containing Lemuru fish oil on the performance, digestive tract, and internal organs of Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan (KUB) chickens aged 1–90 days with an average DOC weight of 26 g/head. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of four treatment groups (T0: control diet containing 2.5% palm oil; T1: diet containing 2.5% lemuru fish oil; T2: T1 supplemented with 60 ppm Zn, 20 ppm Fe, and 0.4 ppm Cr; and T3: T1 supplemented with 120 ppm Zn, 40 ppm Fe, and 0.8 ppm Cr). Each treatment was replicated five times, with ten chickens per replication. Data were analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and significant differences among treatment means (p<0.05) were further evaluated using Duncan’s multiple range test. The results showed that supplementation with up to 120 ppm Zn, 40 ppm Fe, and 0.8 ppm Cr in diets containing 2.5% lemuru fish oil had no significant effect (p>0.05) on the growth performance of KUB chickens. However, dietary supplementation with 60 ppm Zn, 20 ppm Fe, and 0.4 ppm Cr in diets containing 2.5% lemuru fish oil improved feed efficiency in KUB chickens. Furthermore, higher concentrations (120 ppm Zn, 40 ppm Fe, and 0.8 ppm Cr) reduced relative kidney weight, indicating a treatment-related renal response, although its biological significance remains unclear. Increased duodenal weight and length suggest intestinal adaptation, but functional implications were not confirmed. Overall, the dietary treatments modulated performance and organ-related parameters, warranting further physiological investigation.
