Abstract

Literacy management in pesantren is often not systematically integrated into the educational quality assurance framework. This study aims to analyze the management of students’ literacy within a recognition-based quality assurance system at Pesantren Sumatera Thawalib Parabek. This research employed a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation. The informants included pesantren leaders, vice principals, coordinators of the Santri Literacy Forum (Folisa), and students actively involved in literacy activities. The findings reveal that literacy management at Pesantren Sumatera Thawalib Parabek is implemented in a structured manner through planning, implementation, evaluation, and recognition of students’ literacy achievements. The Folisa program functions as an instrument of literacy quality assurance that enhances students’ literacy competencies and provides recognition through publication of students’ works and continuous literacy programs. This study recommends recognition-based literacy management as a best practice for improving the quality of pesantren education.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam, PAI) learning at SMPN 3 Lintau Buo Utara is still dominated by conventional approaches, lacks learning modules aligned with students’ needs, does not yet integrate instruction with the surrounding learning environment, and has not fully optimized the use of technology, thereby necessitating the development of more contextual and interactive teaching materials. This study aimed to develop an environment-based PAI and Budi Pekerti e-module to support environment-based learning. The research employed a research and development method using the ASSURE model with eighth-grade students at SMPN 3 Lintau Buo Utara. Needs analysis data were collected using interview guidelines and analyzed with the Miles and Huberman technique, while validity test data were obtained through validation sheets and analyzed using Aiken’s V formula. Practicality test data consisted of quantitative data collected using student response questionnaires and analyzed with the Degree of Achievement formula, as well as qualitative data obtained through interviews and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman technique. The needs analysis results indicated that an environment-based PAI and Budi Pekerti e-module was highly necessary to develop. The resulting e-module demonstrated a high level of validity, with scores of 0.85 for media validation and 0.92 for content validation, and very high practicality with a score of 93.7 from 45 respondents, further supported by interview findings showing that the e-module was very practical for use in instruction. Accordingly, the environment-based PAI and Budi Pekerti e-module developed in this study is deemed highly valid and highly practical for implementation in classroom learning activities.

Abstract

professionalism is a key factor in improving the quality of education. However, in practice, there are still discrepancies between empirical findings and normative assumptions regarding the influence of teacher demographic characteristics, particularly gender and tenure, on teacher professionalism. Some studies indicate differences in professionalism based on gender and teaching experience, while others show inconsistent results. This uncertainty raises the need for empirical studies to objectively examine the influence of gender and tenure on teacher professionalism. This study aims to analyze teacher professionalism in terms of gender and tenure, and to examine the interaction between these two variables on teacher professionalism. This study used a quantitative approach with a survey method of 42 teachers. Data were analyzed using the t-test, Two-Way ANOVA, and the nonparametric Mann–Whitney test. Limited interviews were conducted as supporting data to strengthen and clarify the results of the statistical analysis. The results showed that gender and tenure did not significantly influence teacher professionalism, either partially or simultaneously, and there was no significant interaction between gender and tenure on teacher professionalism. These statistical findings were reinforced by interview results, which showed that teachers carry out professional duties based on the same competency standards regardless of gender or tenure. This study concludes that teacher professionalism is more influenced by school systems and culture than by individual demographic characteristics. These findings have implications for competency-based teacher professional development and strengthening teacher development systems in schools.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Although modern Islamic education has attracted considerable scholarly attention, studies that specifically synthesize the educational thought of Al-Ghazali and Fazlur Rahman to formulate a holistic and contextual model of Islamic education remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the concept of Islamic education according to Al-Ghazali, examine Fazlur Rahman’s ideas on contemporary Islamic education, and synthesize both perspectives as a basis for reconstructing modern Islamic education. The research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical and comparative design. Data were drawn from 50 documents in the form of classical texts, books, journal articles, and relevant scholarly works selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using document analysis and examined thematically through stages of coding, categorization, comparison, and conceptual synthesis. The findings indicate that Al-Ghazali emphasizes educational goals oriented toward the formation of insan kamil through the integration of intellect, heart, and action, whereas Fazlur Rahman stresses adaptive, contextual, and integrative education through the development of critical thinking skills and contextual understanding of religious texts. The synthesis of these two strands of thought produces a model of modern Islamic education that underscores a balance between spiritual character formation, mastery of knowledge, and adaptive capacity in responding to contemporary social challenges. These findings contribute to the development of modern Islamic educational theory by enriching an integrative framework that bridges classical tradition and neo-modernist thought, and affirm the importance of integrating spiritual, moral, and intellectual values into curricula and learning strategies that are holistic, contextual, and character-oriented. The study also opens up opportunities for further empirical research to examine the implementation of this modern Islamic education model in educational practice.

Abstract

Although the concepts of tarbiyah, ta‘lim, and ta’dib have been widely discussed in Islamic education studies, research that specifically examines Islamic Religious Education teachers’ understanding of these three concepts and their implications for classroom instructional practice remains relatively limited. This study aimed to explore Islamic Religious Education teachers’ understanding of the terms tarbiyah, ta‘lim, and ta’dib and how this understanding is manifested in their teaching practice. The study employed a qualitative approach with a field study design involving ten Islamic Religious Education teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, and were then analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that Islamic Religious Education classroom practice remains dominated by a ta‘lim-oriented approach that focuses on content delivery and cognitive achievement, whereas the concept of tarbiyah is more often understood implicitly as the cultivation of religious attitudes and habits, and ta’dib tends to be reduced to general etiquette or politeness. These results reveal a gap between the normative concepts of Islamic education and pedagogical practice in formal schools and provide an empirical contribution to the development of contemporary Islamic education studies. The study concludes by underscoring the importance of integrating tarbiyah, ta‘lim, and ta’dib holistically within Islamic Religious Education instruction and recommends strengthening teachers’ conceptual competence through continuous professional development programs to improve instructional quality and the formation of adab and student character.
