Abstract

An experiment was designed to study the effects of curcumin and thyroxine hormone supplementation in the diet to improve the reproductive performance of catfish broodstock by improving egg quality that eventually increases the production of seedlings. Catfish used in this experiment were supplemented with curcumin and thyroxine hormone through their feeds for 12 weeks. The results showed that there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the hepatosomatic index (HSI), gonadosomatic index (GSI), percentage of gonad maturity, total cholesterol concentration in the spawned eggs, high density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration in the spawned eggs, fertilization rate of spawned eggs, and hatching rate of fertilized eggs.  However, there were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the concentration of vitellogenin in the spawned eggs, egg diameter of the spawned eggs, and the triglycerides contents of spawned eggs. It was concluded that curcumin and thyroxine supplementations of African catfish increased vitellogenin concentrations and diameters of spawned eggs that have great potential to improve the reproductive performance.

Abstract

In oviparous animals, the qualities of offspring are determined by the materials deposited in the developing oocytes that are synthesized and produced by the hepatocytes under the control of estrogen.  This study was designed to evaluate the effect of turmeric powder supplementation on liver performance to support the reproduction performances of catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus). The study used 60 catfish with average body weight of ± 2 kg. The experimental catfish were assigned into a completely randomized design with 4 treatments and each treatment consisted of 15 replications. The treatment was the dose of turmeric powder supplementation in the commercial feed i.e., 0, 240, 480, and 960 mg/100 g feed.  The experimental catfish were fed two times a day in the morning and in the evening as much as 3% of body weight. The results showed that turmeric powder supplementation at a dose of 240 mg/100 g feed could inhibit liver cell destruction in the catfish as was indicated by the increase in body weight, liver weight, and DNA concentrations of liver, as well as the decrease in the liver malondialdehyde, and serum glutamic piruvic transaminase, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase concentrations. Turmeric powder supplementation can be used in oviparous animals and fish to increase liver function and capacity to synthesize vitellogenin to be deposited in the developing follicles during reproduction phase.

Abstract

Pasak bumi is popular as an aphrodisiac in the traditional medical herb. Boiled drink water of the root powder of pasak bumi is believed can increase the secondary reproduction characters such as libido and the duration of erection. This article is part of the research report that focus on: the distribution of hypophysis acidophil and basophil cells caused of the pasak bumi optimal dose treatment. Research carried out in an experiment using Hemaktosilin Eosin(HE) staining method to study micromorphological distribution of the acidophil and basophil cells of the male rat hypophysis after pasak bumi treatment (the dose of 18 mg pasak bumi/200 g body weight during three days, and the control of 1 ml aquadest). Result of the research showed that: Basophyl cells increased significantly in the third days of pasak bumi administered. Meanwhile acidophyl cells decreased in the third days of pasak bumi administered.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mempelajari performan domba  yang diberi  ransum  mengandung Zn-fitat dan Pb-asetat pada domba. Dua puluh ekor domba yang sedang tumbuh dengan bobot 14-21 kg dipelihara selama 42  hari dan dialokasikan ke dalam 5 perlakuan ransum percobaan. Seng-fitat dan Pb-asetat dibubuhkan ke dalam ransum percobaan sebagai berikut : 1) ransum basal, 2) ransum  basal + ZnCl2, 3) ransum basal + Pb-asetat, 4) ransum basal + Zn-fitat, 5) ransum basal + Zn-fitat + Pb-asetat.  Hasil menunjukan bahwa suplementasi Zn-fitat nyata tidak berpengaruh terhadap pertambahan bobot badan harian dan  konversi ransum (P>0,05), namun kehadiran Pb-asetat menurunkan konsumsi bahan kering (P<0,05).  Kesimpulan suplementasi Zn-fitat tidak efektif dalam meningkatkan performans domba dan Pb-asetat menurunkan konsumsi ransum. Abstract

Tempeh extract is a natural substance that contains phytoestrogens, having similar estrogen activity. This study was designed to determine the potential of tempeh extract in improving the quality bone in premenopausal conditions, and to compare the natural product of tempeh extract with commerciallyavailable hormones (genistein, ethinylestradiol, and somatotropin). Experimental design used was Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisted of 7 experimental groups, each consisted of 3 rats i.e.,1) K= premenopausal rats as a negative control, 2) P = premenopausal rats given distilled water orally as a placebo, 3) TEM = premenopausal rats given tempeh extract 300 mg/day/200g body weight, 4) GEN =premenopausal rats given genistein 0.25 mg/day/kg body weight, 5) EST = premenopausal rats givenethinylestradiol 9x10-3 mg/day/200g body weight, 6) SO = premenopausal rats injected with sesame oil/day/kg body weight, 7) BST = premenopausal rats injected somatotropin 9 mg/day/kg body weight. The parameters observed were the bone and serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations, bone ashconcentrations, bone collagen concentrations, bone water concentrations, bone RNA concentrations, bone length, bone weight, bone density, and bone strength. Abstract

Milk quality is affected by feed nutrient either macronutrient or micronutrient.  Roasted soayabeans and calcium soap were to increase supply by pas protein and fat to dairy cattle. Thus, organic mineral was to increase bioavailability of feed mineral to animal.  The objective of this study was to evaluate roasted soybean, mineral soap and organic mineral supplementation on milk quality of dairy cattle.  Twenty lactating Frisian Holstein cows (initial weight 361.4 ± 40.39 kg) were assigned into a randomized complete block design with 5 treatments and 4 blocks. The treatments were A: basal diet, B: A + roasted soybean, C: B + calcium soap of corn oil, D: C + calcium soap of corn oil, E: C + calcium soap of fish oil. The experimental diets were offered for 9 and 2 weeks preliminary. The results of the experiment showed that milk protein and lactose were not affected by diets.  Milk dry matter  of cows fed A, B, and D diets were higher (P<0.05) than those of fed C and E diets.  Milk fat of cows fed A,  B and D diets were higher (P<0.05) than those of  fed C and E diets. Milk density of cows fed B and E diets were higher (p<0.05) than those of fed A, C and D diets. Milk TPC of cows fed B diet were higher (0.05) than those of fed A, C, D, and E diets. It is concluded that milk quality especially milk protein and lactose concentration are not affected by roasted soyabeans, Ca-soap, and organic mineral. Abstract

Katuk (Sauropus androgynus L Merr) is known to contain carotenoids, vitamin E, vitamin C, protein and phytosterol compound. This study was aimed to determine the ability of phytosterols in Sauropus androgynus (SA) leaf to obtain poultry product that has low cholesterol content. One hundred fifty female quails were raised from 2-27 weeks old, divided into three treatment diets, five replicates with 10 quails in each replicate. The treatment diets were: 1) Control group: diet without katuk leaf meal; 2) Diet with 9% SA ethanol 70% extract (SAE); 3) Diet containing 9% SA meal (SAM). Kolesterols were determined with CHOD-PAP-Method by Human, there is enzymatic Colorimetric Test for Cholesterol with Lipid Clearing Factor. The result showed that total cholesterol in the egg yolk, carcass and liver of SAE and SAM treated quails were lower (P<0.05) than that of the control-treated quails, except the cholesterol content in the serum. These findings indicated that the cholesterol concentration of female quails was decreased due to phytosterol content in katuk leaf. Key Words: Phytosterol, Katuk Leaf, Kolesterol, Quails

Abstract

Bali cattle (Bos javanicus) are common species distributed throughout Indonesia to survive in tropical hot, and humid climates. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is a random deviation from perfect bilateral symmetry. FA is often used to measure developmental stability in individuals and can be used as a marker for the impact of environmental and genetic stress. This study aims to investigate the pattern of developmental instability in Bali cattle as caused by environmental stress at various altitudes using the FA index. FA indexes in this study were used to compare asymmetrical physical traits of Bali cattle in Sembalun high altitude and Serading low altitude. Sixty-five Bali cattle were used in this study reared at different altitudes, namely Serading, Sumbawa Island (50 m above sea level), and Sembalun, Lombok Island (1,186 m above sea level). The physical traits of Bali cattle measured were horn circumference (horn), a distance of hip to spine bone (pelvic), metatarsal circumference (metatarsal), and metacarpal circumference (metacarpal). The FA1 and FA5 indexes showed significant metacarpal differences between Bali cattle reared at Sembalun and Serading population (P<0.05). FA11 multiple trait index as a composite of all traits revealed a significant difference as well. (P<001). It can be concluded that various heat stress by altitude impacts the asymmetry of Bali cattle.

Abstract

Infrared thermography (IRT) is an alternative solution that can be applied to replace invasive methods currently used in the monitoring of goats' physiological and hematological parameters. This study was done to compare and correlate the physiological and hematological conditions of young Sapera dairy goats and their correlations with results obtained by IRT. Four young Sapera dairy goats (weight of 26-28 kg) were kept in the individual rearing cage. Skin surface temperature (TS), rectal temperature (TR), body temperature (TB), heartbeat (HR), respiration rate (RR), and IRT at eyes, mouth, nose, legs, left body, right body, vagina, and vulva were monitored from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in 2 h intervals. Blood samplings were done at the beginning and the end of the obsevation time. Results showed that IRTs at several body parts were positively correlated with physiological parameters, except for heartbeat. Negatively correlation was observed in hematological parameters. The highest correlation (r = +0.85) was observed in the correlation between the results of the left rear leg IRT on TB. It was concluded that IRT can be applied to examine goats’ physiological conditions especially body temperature.

Abstract

Sex determination in turtle species is not only based on genotype, but also rely on the incubation temperature. In addition, sexual differentiation takes place during the thermo-sensitive period (TSP). This study was conducted to determine the effects of incubation temperature on sex expression profile of determination gene, bioreproduction, phenotype, and locomotory performances  of olive ridley turtle hatchlings. Fertile eggs incubated at two temperatures, namely feminine temperature (30-33°C), and masculine temperature (26-27°C). Value of cycle threshold (CT) measured during TSP, i.e 23-25 embryonic development stage, and after TSP, i.e 26-27 embryonic development stage using real time PCR techniques. Comparison of gene expression at both incubation temperatures were analyzed by ANOVA, and Student’s t test. Hatchling bioreproduction and phenotype measurement consist of the incubation period, embryo growth, morphometrics, and locomotori performances hatchlings were analyzed with regression analysis and Student’s t test. The results showed expression of both aromatase and Rspond 1 genes (which plays a role in ovarian differentiation) after the TSP that incubated at feminine temperature higher and different with masculine temperature. In conjunction with the  bioreproduction and phenotype, the incubation period of feminine temperature shorter than that of masculine. Likewise, growth of the embryo of feminine temperature was faster than that of masculine. Incubation at feminine temperature significantly affect to carapace width, length and width of the plastron, long flippers and rear arms, long neck, and the frequency of the swing flippers.
