Abstract

The hepatoprotector activity of pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia Jack.) roots was evaluated in carbontetrachloride (CCl4)-induced rats. Each rat was administered 500 mg/kg body weight of metanol extractand its derivates (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol-water) for 7 consecutive days. Thepositive control group received 25 mg silymarin/kg body weight daily for 7 consecutive days. Hepatoprotectoractivity was assessed by measuring serum alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase(AST). Futhermore, hepatic tissues were subjected to histopathological studies. The results and AST(272.33±85.63 U/L) compared to methanol extract (380.61±324.88 U/L and 475.27±412.31 U/L), n-hexanefraction (279.80±304.92 U/L and 488.53±426.81 U/L), chloroform fraction (418.30±294.80 U/L and427.70±273.08 U/L), and ethyl acetate fraction (312.80±443.30 U/L and 418.40±370.52 U/L), but thisresult was not as good as silymarin (ALT 105.09±21.62 U/L and AST 310.25±2.45 U/L). Moreover, thehistopathological studies of methanol-water fraction was also not as good as silymarin . It was concludedthat methanol-water fraction of pasak bumi roots has a hepatoprotector potensial.

Abstract

Empirically, kemangi leaves reported to increase health quality in human and livestock. Thepreliminary study was designed to explore the potency of ethanol extract of kemangi leaves to increaselaying hens performance. Sixteen laying hens (pullet) were divided into 4 groups and repeated 4 times.Control group was laying hen administered aquadest orally, treated group was laying hen administeredextract of kemangi leaves orally at a dose of 1, 2, and 3 mg/kg BW, respectively. Every day, the experimentallaying hens were fed for 3 times and drinking water was provided ad libitum. Variables observed were thenumber of eggs, egg weight, time of first laying, egg laying intervals, egg quality ( water content, crudeprotein, and crude fat), and liver function (SGPT and SGOT values) . Results of this research showed thatadministration of kemangi leaves extract at a dose of 3 mg/kg BW significantly increased the number ofegg production and egg weight (p<0.05). Time of first laying and laying interval did not show any significantdifference among treatments. Examination of moisture, crude protein, and crude fat content of the eggindicated that the administration of kemangi leaves extract did not affect egg quality. Extract of kemangileaves decreased SGPT and SGOT values that indicated improvement of liver function. It was concludedthat administration of ethanol extract of kemangi leaves could increase laying hens productivity byimprovement of liver function that is critical in vitellogenesis.

Abstract

The experiment was conducted to study the activity of ethanol extract of belimbing wuluh (EEBW) as antipyretic. Fever induction was done by using difteri pertusis tetanus (DPT) vaccine intramuscularly at a dose of 0.1 mL/100 g BW. Male white rat strain spraque dawley with range of weight by 200 to 300 g was used in this research.Fifteen experimental rats were used to explore the specific time of fever (time of early fever and time of peak fever) which were divided in 2 treatments, i.e. 10 experimental rats with DPT vaccine injection and 5 experimental rats without DPT vaccine injection as control.Fourty experimental rats were used to study effectivity of EEBW as antipyretic which were grouped with factorial randomized design with 4 x 2 and 5 replications. The first factor was various substance administered which consisted of aquadest (control), EEBW 0.88 g/kg BW, EEBW 1.75 g/kg BW, and aspirin 0.004 g/kg BW.The second factor was time of fever detection, i.e. time of early stage fever and time of peak fever. The variable was measured with rectal temperature of the experimental rats by using digital thermometer (correction factor 0.01oC) every 30 minutes. The data were analyzed with t-student dan general linear model (GLM). Increasing of rectal temperature of experimental rats with DPT injection began at 30 minutes post-DPT injection (time of early stage fever) and reached time of peak fever at 210 minutes post-DPT injection. Ethanol extract of belimbing wuluh at dose of 1.75 g/kg BW administered at early fever lowered rectal temperature of the experimental rats compared to the other groups. It was concluded that the administration of EEBW at dose of 1.75 g/kg BW was effective combination in dose and time administration as an antipyretic.

Abstract

Physiological aging or aging due to oxidative stress decrease glutathione level in the hippocampuswhich impacts the respons impaired hippocampus celuller. Hippocampus cellular respons disorderscharacterized with decreased viability, increased mortality, and the shortening of the axons of neurons. One way to improve hippocampus cellular respons is to  increase the levels of glutathione and theconcentration of glutathione precursor. One compound that provides glutathione precursors is alanine-glutamine dipeptide. This research was designed to obtain the improve of hippocampus cellular responsresult from the administration of 7% alanine-glutamine dipeptide concentration of aged or oxidative-stressed rats. The improvement of hippocampus cellular respons affect  the improvement of the hippocampus function. The experimental rats were assigned into a completely randomized design consisted of threefactors with 2x2x2 factorial arrangement. The first factor was the age of the experimental rats, consistedof two levels i.e., 12 and 24 months. The second factor was oxidative stress consisted of two levels, i.e.,without and with oxidative stress. The third factor was alanine-glutamine dipeptide administrationconsisted of 2 concentrations, i.e. 0% and 7%. The results showed that  administration of 7% alanine-glutamine dipeptide improved level of glutathione in the hippocampus either in younger (58,76%) or aged(125,81%) rats or in normal (76,47%) and in oxidative-stressed rats (97,26%). These antioxidant hadmediated the respons improve viability, mortality, and long axons responses of neurons at younger (4,11%,37,07%, and 12,58%) or aged (6,91%, 37,85%, and 32,84%) rats, in normal (3,25%, 29,21%, and 21,04%)and oxidative stress (7,80%, 43,01%, dan 25,56%) rats. This research concluded that the alanine-glutaminedipeptide 7% increased glutathione levels.  This increased level affected the improvement of cellularresponds in aging hippocampus, physiological aging, or aging due to oxidative stress in rats.

Abstract

The experiment was designed to study the effects of sipatah-patah extract (ESP) on bone growth ingrowing female rats in order to prevent osteoporosis during postmenopausal period. Twenty growing femaleSprague Dawley rats in similar body weight were used with the average of age was 20 days old. Theexperimental rats were randomly divided into 5 (five) groups: control group (NOV-0, administered carboxylmethyl cellulose 1%) and groups administered ESP at the age of 30 days (NOV-1), 60 days (NOV-2), 90days (NOV-3), and 120 days (NOV-4) with dosage of 750 mg/kg body weight daily. Blood samples werecollected every 30 days to analyze serum calcium and phosphate concentrations. At the end of the treatment(180 day old), all of the animals were sacrificed to measure and analyze bone growth histologically. Ostibia-fibula slice was stained by using Hematoxylin Eosin (HE) method to observe osteoblast and osteoclastdensities, while Masson trichrome was used to observe trabeculae structure. The results showedadministration of ESP in rat during growing period improved bone growth. NOV-1 with longer duration(150 days) showed better growth rate with longer femur, optimum serum calcium, and phosphateconcentrations, and higher number of osteoblast with lower osteoclast densities compared to control rats(NOV-0). It was concluded that giving ESP at earlier age with longer duration during growth period couldimprove bone growth. This condition was expected could also improve the bone conditions during growingperiod.

Abstract

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the effect of dietary coconut oil as a source of lauric acid and Areca vestiaria Giseke (AV) as a natural antioxidant source on some haematological profile. Two hundred and forty (240) day-old unsexed Lohmann broiler chicks (MB-202 P) were divided into twenty four experimental units (ten chicks per unit) and arranged in a completely randomized design with a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement. Each experimental unit was repeated 3 times each with ten chicks. The first factor was the source of lauric acid in the ration consisted of 2 levels i.e., coconut oil and pure lauric acid. The second factor was dose of antioxidant consisted of 4 levels i.e., 0 (without antioxidant [AV and lauric acid] supplementation), AV at a dose of 625 mg kg-1 ration, AV at a dose of 1250 mg kg-1 ration, and tocopherol at a dose of 200 ppm). Blood sampling were collected from chicken at the end of experiment period (age 35 days). Total number of erythrocyte and leukocyte, Hb, PCV, together with absolute count of deferentiation of leukocyte were determined. General linear model and Tukey test were used for statistical analysis of the result. Blood sampling were collected from chicken at the end of experiment period (age 35 days). Total number of erythrocyte and leukocyte, Hb, PCV, together with absolute count of deferentiation of leukocyte were determined. General linear model and Tukey test were used for statistical analysis of the result. The study showed that source of lauric acid, antioxidant concentration and its interaction gave the same effect (P>0.05) to the erythrocytes, leucocytes, Hb, PCV, MCH, MCHC, and monocyte percentage of the broiler. The MCV in chickens consuming pure lauric acid was significantly higher than that of coconut oil. MCV values in chickens that received antioxidant AV at a dose of 625 mg kg-1 were significantly higher (P<0.05) than the others. The source of lauric acid was significant (P<0.01) affecting the percentage of lymphocytes and eosinophils, whereas the concentrations of antioxidants significantly affected the percentage of lymphocytes and heterophils, as well as the apparent effect (P<0.05) indicated by the eosinophil and basophil percentages.. The results of this study indicate that the use of lauric acid and concentration of antioxidant AV in the ration does not change the health status of broiler.

Abstract

The bat is very important for human life, because of their  role as pollinator of plants, as a producer oforganic fertilizer,  and as food.  In Northern Celebes fruit eating bats serve as exotic food, so the presenceof bats were threatened to be extinct due to uncontrolled hunting.  The changes of the forest for plantationlands, damage the habitats and the bats were forced to migrate out.   The aim of the study was to identifythe fruit eating bats of Celebes.  Morphometry of body size, skull,  and physical characteristics were usedin determining the types and distribution  of fruit eating bats in Celebes. The field survey was carried outat the hunting area, bat dealers, and bat sellers. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptivemethod and interpreted by narrating to describe the entire study. The result show that  there were fivetypes of fruit eating bats : i.e.  kalong sulawesi (Acerodon celebensis),  paniki pallas (Nyctimene cephalotes),codot wallet (Thoopterus nigrescens), nyap biasa (Rousettus amplexicaudatus), and  kalong hitam  (Pteropusalecto).
