Abstract

The objective of the study was to determine antioxidant enzyme activity and concentration of malondialdehyde on broiler which consumed feed containing lauric acid and natural antioxidant from Areca vestiaria Giseke. The study used 240 day-old chicks of Lohmann MB 202 P strain placed randomly at 24 experimental cage units (10 chickens each) of the litter system. The average temperature of the cage at the study was 25.80 to 32.080 C with relative air humidity rate of 67.69 to 86.20%. The research method followed a Factorial Completely Randomized Design 2 x 4 with 3 replications. The first factor was the source of lauric acid in feed, i.e. conventional coconut oil (CO) and pure lauric acid (LA). The second factor was the source of antioxidant in the form of dosage of Areca vestiaria (AV) and vitamin E supplementation (TF) with four levels of AV, ie 0, 625 mg.kg-1, 1250 mg.kg-1, and TF at a dose of 200 mg .kg-1 feed. Feed and drinking water were given ad libitum. Meat sampling to measure SOD, catalase and MDA was taken at the end of the study by first chickens were fasted for ± 8 hours (overnight). The sample used was right breast meat of experimental male chicken. The data were average from three experimental chickens. The data obtained were analyzed for the variant with the general linear model on MINITAB (version 16), then tested the differences between treatments using Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD). The results showed that the source of laurate had a significant effect on SOD, catalase, and MDA, while antioxidant concentration significantly decreased SOD and MDA compared with control. The interaction between lauric sources and antioxidant concentrations affected catalase and MDA. The use of coconut oil as much as 3% and antioxidant supplementation of Areca vestiaria Giseke in feed at a dose of 1250 mg kg-1 could decrease lipid oxidation product of meat to produce a healthy food product.

Abstract

The study was conducted in North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and Central Sulawesi during March untilOctober 2011. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of fruit bats  (P. alecto) as sourceof meat. Observed variables were body weight, carcass weight, noncarcass weight, the bone weight, meatweight, fat weight, and skin weight, respectively. To estimate the growth rate of the bats, analysis of therelationship between body weight and carcass components was done, while estimation of  growth rate ofcarcass components were analyzed by multiple linear regression. The results showed that the carcassproduction of  P. alecto in the three locations was 54.49%-56.55%, meat production was 45.37% -54.07%,and the coefficient of determination was 0.65-0.99.  Conclusions of this study is that the body weight  canbe used for  prediction  of growth rate, and weight of carcass, meat, bone, fat, and skin of the fruit bats, respectively.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the adaptive response of young sapera dairy goats on heat stress due to changes in feed quantities. Four young sapera dara dairy goats was kept in individual cages measuring 1.6 × 1.0 m2. Feeding in the form of concentrate and silage, respectively 800 g/day (A), 500 g/day (B), 200 g/day (C), and without feeding (D). The study design used Latin squares 4x4 with observed parameters including environmental conditions, physiological and haematological responses. The results showed that the air temperature, humidity, and wind speed in the cage were 20.94-31.59 °C, 47.19-99.20 %, and 1.81-2.02 m/ sec, respectively. Physiological and haematological responses of the four groups indicated that skin temperature, respiratory rate, and haematological parameters did not show significant differences (P>0.05), while body and rectal temperature, and heart rate showed differences (P<0.05) only at several points of observation, especially between groups A and D. In general, the rectal temperature and heart rate of 38.5-39.3 °C and 72.0-99.5 times per minute were still within the normal range. The physiological and haematological response values of group D that were lower than another groups indicated that reducing feed intake would reduce the metabolic heat generated in an effort to maintain the body’s thermal balance and the adaptive response of goats. This indicates that the young sapera dairy goat has the adaptive ability to heat stress due to changes in feed quantity.

Abstract

An experiment was designed to study the growth phenotypes of piglets born to sows injected withpregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) prior to mating inorder to improve endogenous secretions of pregnant hormones during pregnancy. The experimental sowsused in this study were 10 local breed sows with body weight ranges of 30-40 kg. Before mating, estrouscycles of the experimental sows were synchronized by injecting 3.75 mg prostaglandin twice with 14 daysinterval. The experimental sows were then divided into two groups, each consisted of 5 sows. The firstgroup was injected with 200 IU PMSG and 100 IU hCG per sow at the same time with the secondprostaglandin injection (day 15th), while the second group was not injected with PMSG and hCG but it wasinjected with NaCl 0.95% as a control. After showing estrous behavior, the experimental sows were mixedwith selected boars for natural mating. The pregnant sows were maintained until farrowing and weaning. Variable measured were body weights and body lengths and leg heights of the piglets at birth andweaning. The results showed that injection of the sows with PMSG and hCG prior to the mating, increasedbirth weight by 76.92% and total birth weight of live piglets per sow by 265.6% as compared to control.Piglets born to sows injected with PMSG and hCG prior to mating had higher survival rate with adramatically decreased mortality and a higher pre-weaning growth rate that finally increased total weightof weaned pigs per sows dramatically by 107.44% (increased 2 times) as compared to control. It is concludedthat the growth phenotypes of local piglets could be improved by injecting the sows with gonadotropinbefore mating.

Abstract

Eimeria tenella is one of the nine of Eimeria species, a pathogenic intraseluler protozoa causing aviancoccidiosis. Infection was initiated by the ingestion of sporulated oocysts. The aim of this study was toinvestigate the effect of E. tenella oocyst incubation in methanol extract of Andrographis paniculata beforeinfection in broiler performance. This research used 115 broiler DOC (CP 707) devided into five groups, each group consisted of 23 broilers. The infection with 1x105 oocyst were done at the 14th day old of chicken. The 1st group was placebo (KN), while the 2nd group was infected with unincubated oocyst (KP), and theother three groups i.e. : 3rd, 4th, 5th were infected with incubated oocyst in A. paniculata extract for 2, 4, and6 hours, respectively. The number of oocysts in feces were counted on day 5th to 14th post-infection, theheterophile and macrophages were counted from caecum histology preparation, by slaughtered threechickens of each of groups on the day 0,3,6.9, and 14 post infection, and accretion body weight wasmeasured by weighing chickens per week to five-week old chickens. The results of this study indicated thatthe incubation period the sporulated oocyst in the extract of A.paniculata for six hours before infection, reduced the number of oocysts production in the feces, the number of inflammatory cells (macrophages andheterophile) in the cecum, and increases body weight (gain). In conclusion A.paniculata extract decreasedthe pathogenisity of E.tenella oocyst, so the extract of A.paniculata has good potential as anticoccidia. Itis high likely that A. paniculata extract has a potential to be anticoccidia.

Abstract

The study of behavior has a very important role in wildlife management process both for cultivationand for preservation in nature. The purpose of this study was to observe and document behaviors and dailyactivities of weris. Observation of hatching process and behavior of juvenile weris used direct observationmethod, while the behavior of adult weris in captivity used scanning sampling method. The data wereanalyzed descriptively. Weris had six stages of hatching processes starting from the breakdown of the eggshell until the chick moved out from the shell. The placement of the eggs in hatching machine was byputting the dull part on upside. Weris is a diurnal bird that active in the morning until late afternoon.Young and adult weris birds had different activities, i.e., adult birds did bathing and flying activities, while the young birds just rest and sleep. Observation on behavior of adult weris (n = 10) showed that thehighest activity for 12 hours was moving (314,6 minutes), then followed by resting (283,1 minutes), eating(51,8 minutes), drinking (29 minutes), bathing (22,9 minutes), and the lowest was preening (18,6 minutes).Inherited behavior pattern, such as bathing, did not change, eventhough the environment changed.

Abstract

Antioxidant activity of clove leaf was investigated. The clove leaves (Eugenia aromatica) wereprepared with reflux extraction using methanol, water, and ethanol. Total activities of the extractsand reducing power were measured with thiocyanate method and reducing potential method. Resultshowed that the highest total antioxidant activity was observed in methanol extract. It appearsthat the ability of this extract for partitioning at the interface of emulsion in tested oxidationsystem was the highest among the other extracts, therefore it had the best activity to inhibitoxidation. The type of phenolic compounds of this extract appeared to be responsible for the highestradical scavenging capacity. The same phenomenon occurred for reducing power, methanol extracthad the highest reducing power, thereby suggesting that each extracts comprised different type ofphenol based on different polarity of reflux used for extraction. Total antioxidant activity and thehighest reducing power obtained from methanol extract. Both are closely related to total phenolcontent of the clove leaves.
