Abstract

Inappropriate use of drugs in self-medication or self-treatment practices can cause serious health problems. The rational use of drugs is important to ensure the safety and accuracy of treatment in self-medication practices commonly carried out by the community, but often without adequate understanding of the dosage, indications, and side effects of drugs. The purpose of this activity was to increase the knowledge of the Kota Bangun Village community regarding self-medication through direct education using posters and leaflets, as well as pre-test and post-test evaluations. A total of 53 respondents participated in this activity. The results showed an increase in the average pretest score from 61.7% to 92.7% on the posttest. These findings indicate that community-based education with a personal approach and print media is effective in improving public health literacy. Similar activities are recommended to be implemented on an ongoing basis to strengthen the community's ability to use drugs safely and responsibly and prevent the risk of drug abuse

Abstract

Introduction: Skin diseases are among the most common public health problems in coastal areas, including among the Bajo community in Baliara Village, West Kabaena Subdistrict, Bombana Regency. The community’s close interaction with the marine environment, limited implementation of personal hygiene, and inadequate sanitation conditions increase the risk of skin diseases. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the level of knowledge, attitudes, personal hygiene practices, and environmental sanitation with the incidence of skin diseases among the Bajo people. Method: This research employed a quantitative analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 330 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using the Spearman Rank test and logistic regression. Result: The results showed a significant relationship between all independent variables and the incidence of skin diseases, namely knowledge (p = 0.001; OR = 2.31), attitude (p = 0.005; OR = 1.92), personal hygiene practices (p = 0.041; OR = 1.67), and environmental sanitation (p = 0.000; OR = 2.86). Among all variables, environmental sanitation was the most dominant factor. Conclusion: The study concludes that personal hygiene behavior and environmental sanitation play a crucial role in preventing skin diseases. Therefore, public health interventions involving education, behavior change, and improvement of sanitation infrastructure are essential to reduce the incidence of skin diseases in coastal communities.

Abstract

The Mesjid River Estuary in Dumai City is an area prone to sediment accumulation due to the influence of river hydrology dynamics and interaction with oceanographic processes in coastal waters. The sedimentation phenomenon that occurs has a direct implication on the rate of estuary siltation and sediment transport patterns that affect the balance of the aquatic ecosystem. This study aims to analyze the sedimentation rate and sediment characteristics at the Mesjid River Estuary and examine the impact of sedimentation on siltation and sediment transport patterns. This study was conducted in December 2024 at the Mesjid River Estuary, Dumai City, with the aim of analyzing the sedimentation rate and its implications for siltation and sediment transport. Sedimentation in estuarine areas is an important phenomenon that affects changes in channel morphology, navigation capacity, and coastal ecosystem balance. Data collection was conducted at six research stations from upstream to downstream by recording water quality parameters, sediment characteristics, sedimentation rates, total suspended solids (TSS), and sediment transport. The results showed that the sedimentation rate ranged from 7.0 to 10.3 cm/year, with an average of 8.77 cm/year, which is relatively high compared to other estuaries in Southeast Asia. The average TSS value of 135 mg/l indicates a significant supply of sediment from land erosion and anthropogenic activities, while the sediment transport load reached 338.2 tons/year, confirming the role of the estuary as a center of material accumulation. These conditions accelerate siltation, limit the efficiency of maritime transportation, and alter coastal morphological dynamics, necessitating active management strategies and sustainable mitigation to maintain ecosystem functions and support the sustainability of local economic activities

Abstract

Abstract

The widespread use of traditional medicine in Indonesian communities is often not accompanied by adequate awareness of safety, legality, and rational use. This community service program, entitled “Stay Natural, Stay Safe”, aimed to enhance public awareness of proper and safe traditional medicine use through health literacy–based education in Anawai Village, Kendari City. The intervention employed a door-to-door pharmaceutical communication approach supported by printed educational leaflets as communication, information, and education (CIE) media. Activities were conducted through observation, educational counseling, practical demonstrations, and evaluation. The evaluation results showed a high level of community understanding, with a mean score of 4.49 and an achievement rate of 89.73%, categorized as very good. These findings indicate that health literacy–based education supported by leaflets effectively improves community awareness, confidence, and rational behavior in traditional medicine use and can serve as a sustainable community-based health promotion strategy.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to encourage the development of Dayun Watermelon as a superior regional product while providing legal protection through the Geographical Indication (GI) scheme as a form of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Dayun Watermelon has unique taste, quality, and cultivation techniques that are passed down from generation to generation, so it has the potential to become a regional asset with high economic and cultural value. The implementation was conducted through socialization regarding the importance of IPR protection, technical training in preparing Geographical Indication documents, mentoring farmer groups in building institutions, and facilitating cooperation with local governments and related stakeholders. The results indicate an increase in farmer and community understanding regarding the benefits of Geographical Indication protection, the formation of a collective understanding to maintain product quality, and the initial steps in preparing IPR application documents. This activity is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of Dayun Watermelon, improve farmer welfare, and protect local identity through a sustainable IPR protection system.
